A Mysterious ‘Ping’ Is Coming from Deep in the Arctic
A mysterious noise emanating from the sea floor in one of Canada’s northern territories has been puzzling locals and officials, who have yet to identify its source.
The sound has been heard throughout Fury and Hecla strait, a channel of water in the Nunavut region, and has proven to be a mystery for the local community. The remote area is located in the northernmost territory of Canada, where some residents rely on hunting for their food supplies.
Observers noticed a decline in sea mammals in the area over the summer and have attributed the scarcity to the strange noise, which has been described as a “ping” or a “hum” and is reportedly audible through the hulls of boats. Members of the Legislative Assembly, who represent the area, noted the unusual lack of animals. MLA George Qualut told CBC News “That passage is a migratory route for bowhead whales, and also bearded seals and ringed seals. There would be so many in that particular area. This summer there was none.”
Speculation over the source of the noise has included Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation’s mining activity to the conservation work of Greenpeace. Both organisations have denied any involvement, according to CBC News. The Canadian Department of National Defence is also investigating, as detailed by a spokesperson in a statement to CBC who said that the “Canadian Armed Forces are taking the appropriate steps to actively investigate the situation.”

Samsung is recalling almost 3 million washing machines because they can explode
Samsung Electronics (SSNLF) and federal regulators announced the recall on Friday after reports that the lids of the machines can pop off violently while the laundry is spinning, posing an injury risk.
Samsung said it can happen when bedding, water-resistant or bulky items are washed on high speed. The drum can lose its balance, causing excessive vibrations that dislodge the lid.
Samsung was hit with a class action lawsuit over the machines in August. A customer in Texas said her washer "exploded with such ferocity that it penetrated the interior wall of her garage," according to court documents.
The South Korean company is already dealing with the recall of 1 million Galaxy Note 7 smartphones, which can burst into flames while charging.
In September, the CPSC told customers to "immediately stop using and power down" the Galaxy Note 7. The FAA told travelers to turn off their phones when flying, and the New York City transit system said to turn them off on trains and buses.
Samsung declined further comment about the washing machines.
The company is offering customers free in-home repair, with a one-year warranty extension, or a rebate to buy a new washer, from Samsung or another company, with free installation and removal of the old one. Customers who stick with Samsung get $150 toward their next washer.

Roli Blocks is an affordable, modular way to make electronic music
British music-gear company Roli is mostly known for its attempts at reimagining the piano. The full-size Seaboard and smaller Seaboard Risemay bear similarities to traditional keyboards, but their rubberized, touch-sensitive buttons let you modulate, pitch-bend and slide between notes in a way that's far different from what you can do on a standard keyboard or synthesizer. However, price is a big barrier to entry -- the Seaboard Rise starts at $800, while its full-size counterpart will set you back $2,000 or more.
But Roli has been working on a way to bring its unique music-creation tools down to a much lower price point, and it's taking the wraps off those efforts today. Roli Blocks are a set of modular synth controllers that snap together and hook up to your iPhone or iPad via Bluetooth. They're tiny and inexpensive: The main controller, called the Lightpad, is a small square (less than 4 inches to a side) that sells for $179. That's significantly cheaper than Roli's other products. And while you can't play the Lightpad like a keyboard, the short time I spent playing with it and the other Roli Blocks convinced me that it's still a powerful, flexible and fun music-making tool.
