Malware targeting webcams and microphones has now come up for Mac laptops

Patrick Wardle, an ex-NSA staffer who heads up research at security intelligence firm Synack, discovered a way for Mac malware to tap into your live feeds from Mac's built-in webcam and microphone to locally record you even without detection.

One of the most insidious actions of malware is abusing the video capabilities of an infected host to record an unknowing user. Macs, of course, are not immune; malware such as OSX/Eleanor, OSX/Crisis, and others, all attempt to spy on OS X users.

Wardle is the same researcher who has discovered a number of security weaknesses in Apple products, including ways to bypass the Gatekeeper protections in OS X.

Wardle also released a free tool called RansomWhere? earlier this year that has generic detection capabilities for Mac OS X ransomware variants.

Wardle is scheduled to present his new findings at the Virus Bulletin conference in Denver later today, along with his research demonstrating how malware could easily piggyback on your legitimate webcam sessions to keep its spying activity hidden.

Yes, piggybacking legitimate webcam sessions initiated by you.

Here's How Mac Malware Works:
Since Mac's firmware-level protection lights the green LED for any unauthorized access to user's webcam, Wardle believes that attackers can use a malicious app that quietly monitors the system for any outgoing feed of an existing webcam session – like a Skype or FaceTime call – where the light indicator would already be ON.

The malware then piggybacks the victim's webcam or microphone to secretly record both audio and video session, without any visible indication of this malicious activity and any fear of detection.

In his paper presentation, titled 'Getting Duped: Piggybacking on Webcam Streams for Surreptitious Recordings,' Wardle outlines the threat along with countermeasures to detect "secondary" processes that try to access an existing video session on OS X.

How to Prevent Your WebCam and Mic from Being Hacked

Moreover, physically covering your webcam wit a tape – like what Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and FBI Director James Comey do – also offers a low-tech approach to keeping snoopers away.

How to stop Apple automatic macOS 10.13 Sierra update on your Macbook

Microsoft has been doing the same thing to its Windows 7 and 8 users by aggressively pushing Windows 10 installation since its launch, which caused a massive outcry.

Following in Microsoft's footsteps, Apple has started "pre-downloading" the latest version of its desktop operating system, macOS 10.12 Sierra, in the background, if you are still running OS X El Capitan.

If you have automatic downloads enabled on your Mac, a large file of around 5GB will mysteriously be downloaded to your computer in the background, using your Internet bandwidth for unrequested files.
Apple justifies this move by saying that the automatic download would make it easier for users to get the newest operating system, encouraging them to update their Macs.

The good news, however, is that the update will not install automatically without your permission.

Once downloaded automatically in the background, users who are running OS X El Capitan version 10.11.5 or later will receive a notification that says macOS Sierra is ready to be installed.

All you need to do is just click the Install button to get started with the update.
Thankfully, the automatic update feature is smart enough that it will only be downloaded on Mac computers that have an adequate amount of storage space and meet the specs for macOS Sierra.
So the Sierra installer will be deleted if the host Mac computer starts running low on storage.

"Apple is also being smart about the download. If your computer is low on space, macOS Sierra will not download," The Loop reports. "In addition, if it has downloaded and your computer starts to get low on space, the download will be automatically deleted."

If you're not ready to upgrade to the latest macOS or want to download it later, you can simply delete the Sierra installer manually to keep from being prompted to do the install.

To delete the Sierra installer, go to Finder → Applications and then look for an application called 'Install macOS Sierra' and move the application to Trash, and Empty the Trash for leaving no trace of the Sierra.

Your Mac could prompt you for your Mac login password to complete the above action.

But if you don't want a bulky 5GB update to be downloaded to your computer for first before you kick off the installation, you can disable automatic downloads from the App Store to avoid the unwanted download.

To disable the feature, you can head on to System Preferences → App Store → Automatically check for updates and then uncheck "Download newly available updates in the background."

That's it.

Dropbox security fears surrounding its Mac app about the permissions it needs

Users now claim that Dropbox's Mac app asks for overly broad permissions, swipes your password and even hacks the operating system. The cloud storage service is trying to allay those fears, though. Desktop app team member Ben Newhouse has responded to concerns on Hacker News with both an explanation of design decisions and a promise to improve its transparency.

The app only asks for the permissions it needs, Newhouse says. It uses the Mac's accessibility kit for certain tie-ins (such as in Office), and demands elevated access to your OS when standard programming interfaces fall short. The permissions aren't as "granular" as Dropbox would like, the developer adds. He stresses that Dropbox can't see your system's administrator password, and a privilege check on startup is only to make sure the software works consistently, especially across OS versions.

As for what the company will do to turn things around? To start, it wants to do a "better job" explaining what its software is doing and why it needs the permissions it does. Also, it's teaming with Apple to reduce that dependence on elevated access in macOS Sierra, and will respect when people disable Dropbox's accessibility permissions -- currently, it turns the permissions back on.

The effort to come clean may assuage those worried Dropbox is running roughshod over your computer. However, it's not pleasing everyone. Hacker News users want the firm to more explicitly outline why it needs the permissions it does, and they're worried that the broad system-level control opens the door to malware that otherwise wouldn't be possible. It's important to stress that Dropbox's requests aren't unique -- apps like Chrome and Steam also demand accessibility permissions for features, such as Steam's screen overlay. However, that might not reassure customers who believe that Dropbox's existing approach is both unnecessary and risky.

BitTorrent app was linked to Mac ransomware

BitTorrent app was linked to the first known instance of Mac ransomware, security researchers at ESET have pinpointed another form of malware taking advantage of Transmission to infect Mac users. Keydnap, as it's called, takes advantage of a modified version of Transmission (planted on the developer's site without its knowledge) to attack your computer. It's similar to the ransomware's approach in more ways than just its choice of host app -- it even uses a signing key to trick Apple's Gatekeeper safeguard into letting it through.

The malware's effect may be limited. Transmission only had the affected version available for about a day before they pulled it, and ESET has already told Apple about Keydnap about the relevant key. It's just a matter of blocking that key to prevent the malware from running. Nonetheless, this is a reminder that even stringent system-level protections won't always catch rogue code.

Literally minutes after being notified by ESET, the Transmission team removed the malicious file from their web server and launched an investigation to identify how this happened. At the time of writing, it was impossible to tell exactly when the malicious file was made available for download. According to the signature, the application bundle was signed on August 28th, 2016, but it seems to have been distributed only the next day. Thus, we advise anyone who downloaded Transmission v2.92 between August 28th and August 29th, 2016, inclusively, to verify if their system is compromised by testing the presence of any of the following file or directory:

  • /Applications/Transmission.app/Contents/Resources/License.rtf
  • /Volumes/Transmission/Transmission.app/Contents/Resources/License.rtf
  • $HOME/Library/Application Support/com.apple.iCloud.sync.daemon/icloudsyncd
  • $HOME/Library/Application Support/com.apple.iCloud.sync.daemon/process.id
  • $HOME/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.iCloud.sync.daemon.plist
  • /Library/Application Support/com.apple.iCloud.sync.daemon/
  • $HOME/Library/LaunchAgents/com.geticloud.icloud.photo.plist

Apple OS Can Be Hacked Remotely With Just A Message

Cisco Talos senior researcher Tyler Bohan, who discovered this critical Stagefright-type bug in iOS, described the flaw as "an extremely critical bug, comparable to the Android Stagefright as far as exposure goes."

Just a year ago vulnerabilities in Android allowed hackers to quietly spy on nearly a billion phones with one specially-crafted text.

iPhone owners should now take note: a security researcher today warned there are comparable vulnerabilities to those Stagefright bugs in iOS allowing completely silent, almost undetectable password theft from iPhones. Apple AAPL +0.14% has patched the flaws in iOS 9.3.3, however, and users have been advised to update as soon as they can.

All an attacker needs to do is create an exploit for the bug and send it via a multimedia message (MMS) or iMessage inside a Tagged Image File Format (TIFF).

Once the message received on the victim's device, the hack would launch.

The critical bug (CVE-2016-4631) actually resides in ImageIO – API used to handle image data – and works across all widely-used Apple operating systems, including Mac OS X, tvOS, and watchOS.

The attack could also be delivered over Safari; all that would be required would be for the user to visit a website containing the malicious code and for the browser to parse the exploit. No interaction with the site would be required.

Bohan described the issue as “an extremely critical bug, comparable to the Android Stagefright as far as exposure goes.” “The receiver of an MMS cannot prevent exploitation and MMS is a store and deliver mechanism, so I can send the exploit today and you will receive it whenever your phone is online,” he added.

In both the cases, no explicit user interaction would be required to launch the attack since many applications (like iMessage) automatically attempt to render images when they are received in their default configurations.
It is quite difficult for the victim to detect the attack, which if executed, could leak victims' authentication credentials stored in memory such as Wi-Fi passwords, website credentials, and email logins, to the attacker.

Since iOS include sandbox protection to prevent hackers exploiting one part of the OS to control the whole thing, a hacker would require a further iOS jailbreak or root exploit to take total control of the complete iPhone.

However, Mac OS X does not have sandbox protection that could allow an attacker to access the Mac computer remotely with the victim's passwords, potentially making users of Apple's PCs completely vulnerable to the attack.

Apple has patched this critical issue in iOS version 9.3.3, along with patches for other 42 vulnerabilities, including memory corruption bugs in iOS' CoreGraphics that helps render 2D graphics across those OSes, according to Apple's advisory.

He also found memory corruption issues in iOS’ CoreGraphics, which helps render 2D graphics across those OSes. Another serious flaws patched by Apple this week resided in FaceTime, permitting anyone on the same network as a user to spy on their conversations. As per Apple’s description, “an attacker in a privileged network position may be able to cause a relayed call to continue transmitting audio while appearing as if the call terminated.” Martin Vigo, a security engineer at Salesforce, uncovered the bug.

Details on all 43 flaws addressed in 9.3.3 can be found on Apple’s advisory. The tech titan also put out advisories for iTunes on Windows, Safari, tvOS, watchOS and OS X El Capitan.

So users are advised to patch their devices as it would not take enough time for bad actors to take advantage of the vulnerabilities, which are now known.

New MacBook announced with 12-inch Retina display with only 1 USB port

It weighs just 2 pounds and, at 12 inches, will sit in between Apple's lightest MacBook Air models. It's 24 percent thinner than the 11-inch MacBook Air, measuring 13.1mm in thickness. There's an all-new keyboard, which spans the full width of the new MacBook. The keyboard features a new "butterfly mechanism" for a better, "much more precise" typing experience. The keyboard also has individual LED lighting for each key, helping to make the device that little bit thinner.

The touchpad has also been overhauled: it no longer clicks. There are four force sensors, one in each corner, and the "click feel" is managed by software.

The new MacBook has a 12-inch screen, which joins Apple's Retina display family with a 2304 x 1440 resolution. Apple says that it consumes 30 percent less power than previous displays.

The MacBook has a new, flatter-style keyboard with a revised mechanism that enables more even key presses, and letting it “be thinner, and more precise in its illumination,” The machine also gets a new Force Touch trackpad has Force Sensors and a Taptic engine. You can click anywhere and get the same feel over the entire surface.

The new MacBook contains 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.0, which is table stakes these days. But it’s also significant what the machine omits. The new MacBook has that single USB-C port and a headphone jack, but no regular USB (at least while the unit is charging), Thunderbolt, or Ethernet ports.

Check out what is USB type-C :  http://www.blogmytuts.net/2014/08/reversible-usb-type-c-connector.html

The machine gets Energy Star 6.1 and EPEAT Gold certifications. It contains arsenic-free display glass, and it’s Beryllium free for the first time. It’s the world’s most energy-efficient notebook, Apple claims.

Apple also unveiled some minor updates to the existing smaller MacBooks. The MacBook Air now has 5th-generation Broadwell Core i5 and i7 processors, Thunderbolt 2, and 2x faster flash storage. The 13-inch MacBook Pro gets similar upgrades, plus the Force Touch trackpad and another hour of battery life (10 hours). All of the revised existing models ship today.

Two configurations are available: a 1.1GHz dual-core Intel Core M model with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD for $1,299, and a 1.2GHz version with a 512GB SSD for $1,599. Both machines will ship April 10th, and you can get one in silver, space gray, or gold.
