Fox is making the Silk Road movie 'Dark Web'

Fox is making a movie called Dark Web about Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht, and the studio enlisted the help of the Coen brothers. The siblings are on board to write the film's screenplay based on the Wired series that tells the story of Ulbricht's empire and its fall in the hands of authorities. Silk Road was once a thriving online black market selling illegal drugs, weapons and even the services of hitmen, where buyers and sellers dealt in Bitcoins as their main currency.

Ulbricht, who was known in the community under the pseudonym Dread Pirate Roberts, began building it back in 2010. Five years later, he was sentenced to life in prison after he was convicted on seven charges of money laundering, drug trafficking, conspiracy and computer hacking, among other things. The controversial figure also ordered a hit on five people, including a blackmailer, according to a transcript of his conversations with assassins that Wired published. While DPR paid for the hits, nobody actually got killed.

As if those elements weren't enough to make a good thriller, one of the federal agents who investigated the case also received a six-and-a-half year sentence. He was found guilty of stealing $800,000 worth of Bitcoins from the marketplace while the feds were investigating the case.

It's unclear if the Coen brothers will also direct Dark Web, but we're sure a lot of people will be thrilled if they sign up for that part.

BMW's motorcycle of the future would use self-balancing tech to keep you safe

BMW has unveiled a slew of concept vehicles to mark its 100th birthday, but its fourth and last example might be the most daring. Its new Motorrad Vision Next 100 concept motorcycle would supposedly be so smart that you wouldn't need a helmet, or even a padded suit. The key would be a self-balancing system that keeps the bike upright whether or not you're moving -- newcomers wouldn't have to worry about toppling over, and veterans could push limits further than usual.

Also, notice the absence of the usual space for an instrument cluster? That's because you wouldn't need it. Most information would instead display through a smart visor that shows data as it becomes relevant. All told, you'd spend more time enjoying open air driving and less time worrying about your speed or range (BMW will only say that this is a "zero-emission" bike, but it'd likely be electric).

Like the other Vision Next 100 concepts, you're not going to see this exact motorcycle on the road any time soon. However, it might not just be due to the grand technological ambitions. While a self-balancing system could prevent you from crashing the bike yourself, it wouldn't protect you in many serious collisions. What if you're forcefully ejected from your vehicle? Regulators would likely require some kind of helmet, even if it's not as cumbersome as what you wear today.

It’s meant to equal the driverless systems automakers also expect to be producing in cars by 2040 and beyond.

“The bike has the full range of connected data from its surroundings and a set of intelligent systems working in the background, so it knows exactly what lies ahead,” said Holger Hampf, BMW's head of user experience.

Several systems—one BMW calls a “Digital Companion,” which offers riding advice and adjustment ideas to optimize the experience, and one called “The Visor,” which is a pair of glasses that span the entire field of vision and are controlled by eye movements—correlate to return active feedback about road conditions to the rider while adjusting the ride of the bike continuously depending on the rider’s driving style. (Sure beats today's motorcycle touchscreen technology.)

“Normally when we develop a motorcycle, we tend to think five to 10 years in advance,” Edgar Heinrich, head of design at BMW Motorrad, said in a press statement. “On this occasion, we looked much further ahead and found … some very attractive prospects.”

Anonymous warns that the Pentagon thinks World War III is ‘imminent’

World affairs have suddenly got rather alarming - with tensions rising between Russia and America simmering as the two nations clash over Syria.

Former leader Mikhail Gorbachev warned this week that the world had reached a ‘dangerous threshold’.

Against this background, hacktivist collective Anonymous has posted a series of alarming videos and news reports - with one suggesting that World War III is ‘imminent’.

But don’t grab your gas mask and head for your doomsday bunker quite yet - the Anon HQ report’s reference to the Pentagon believing that war is imminent isn’t quite as alarming as it sounds.

It’s a - fairly doom-laden - take on this story in fact Pentagon Warns About World War III while Russia Drills for possible Nuclear strike, and it doesn’t mean that nuclear war is about to begin right now.

Anonymous says, ‘When you have a government that operates without limits, when you have a government that militarises the police, a government that views you, the people as the enemy, when you have a government that lies to you

Google added fact checking and it's time for Facebook move now against fake stories

Facebook has stepped into the role of being today’s newspaper: that is, it’s a single destination where a large selection of news articles are displayed to those who visit its site. Yes, they appear amidst personal photos, videos, status updates, and ads, but Facebook is still the place where nearly half of American adults get their news, and we Filipino we spend time checking our Facebook feeds.

Google yesterday announced it will introduce a fact check tag on Google News in order to display articles that contain factual information next to trending news items. Now it’s time for Facebook to take fact-checking more seriously, too.

Facebook has a responsibility to do better, then, when it comes to informing this audience what is actually news: what is fact-checked, reported, vetted, legitimate news, as opposed to a rumor, hoax or conspiracy theory.

It’s not okay that Facebook fired its news editors in an effort to appear impartial, deferring only to its algorithms to inform readers what’s trending on the site. Since then, the site has repeatedly trended fake news stories, according to a Washington Post report released earlier this week.

The news organization tracked every news story that trended across four accounts during the workday from August 31 to September 22, and found that Facebook trended five stories that were either “indisputably fake” or “profoundly inaccurate.” It also regularly featured press releases, blog posts, and links to online stores, like iTunes – in other words, trends that didn’t point to news sites.

Facebook claimed in September that it would roll out technology that would combat fake stories in its Trending topics, but clearly that has not yet come to pass – or the technology isn’t up to the task at hand.

In any event, Facebook needs to do better.

It’s not enough for the company to merely reduce the visibility of obvious hoaxes from its News Feed – not when so much of the content that circulates on the site is posted by people – your friends and family –  right on their profiles, which you visit directly.

Outside of Trending, Facebook continues to be filled with inaccurate, poorly-sourced, or outright fake news stories, rumors and hoaxes. Maybe you’re seeing less of them in the News Feed, but there’s nothing to prevent a crazy friend from commenting on your post with a link to a well-known hoax site, as if it’s news. There’s no tag or label. They get to pretend they’re sharing facts.

There is a difference between a post that’s based on fact-checked articles, and a post from a website funded by an advocacy group. There’s a difference between Politifact and some guy’s personal blog. Facebook displays them both equally, though: here’s a headline, a photo, some summary text.

Of course, it would be a difficult job for a company that only wants to focus on social networking and selling ads to get into the media business – that’s why Facebook loudly proclaims it’s “not a media company.”

Except that it is one. It’s serving that role, whether it wants to or not.

Google at least has stepped up to the plate and is trying to find a solution. Now it’s Facebook’s turn.

A Programmer Hacked His Coffee Machine To Brew Coffee Using Command Line

Many of us, coffee acts as the favorite caffeine delivery system. One such programmer, Simone Margaritelli, who is a researcher at Zimperium, hacked his coffee machine to brew coffee using the command line. This might remind you of another lazy programmer who wrote some hacker scripts to get his jobs done.

Margaritelli calls himself a coffee-loving nerd and hacker who drinks liters of it during the week. So, to make things smoother and grab a better cup of coffee, he bought a smart coffee machine on Amazon. Being an IoT device, he could control the machine over his home network using a mobile application.

Being a programmer, Margaritelli spent most of his hours on a computer. That’s why he felt the need for a console client, something that wasn’t made available by the machine maker.

So, Margaritelli worked to reverse the Android application and understand the communication protocol. This helped him write his own client implementation that lets him make coffee using the terminal.

“I decided to reverse the Android application since it’s usually way easier than reversing iOS ones ( java vs assembly ), once I downloaded the APK I started studying the various classes and methods,” he writes.

He has even shared his code in GitHub and it can be found here.

While writing the Terminal application for his coffee machine, he also discovered some minor security peculiarities. You can read about them and his complete blog post here.

Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter Provided Data Access for a Surveillance Startup Marketed to Target Activists

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, VK, Google's Picasa and Youtube were handing over user data access to a Chicago-based Startup — the developer of a social media monitoring tool — which then sold this data to law enforcement agencies for surveillance purposes, the ACLU disclosed Tuesday.

Government records obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) revealed that the big technology corporations gave "special access" to Geofeedia.

Geofeedia is a controversial social media monitoring tool that pulls social media feeds via APIs and other means of access and then makes it searchable and accessible to its clients, who can search by location or keyword to quickly find recently posted and publicly available contents.

The company has marketed its services to 500 law enforcement and public safety agencies as a tool to track racial protests in Ferguson, Missouri, involving the 2014 police shooting death of Mike Brown.

With the help of a public records request, the civil rights group found that Geofeedia had entered into agreements with Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for their users' data, gaining a developer-level access to all three social networks that allowed them to review streams of user content in ways that regular users of the public cannot.

The Denver Police Department recently signed a $30,000 annual deal with Geofeedia.
Here's what the major tech giants offered Geofeedia:

  • Facebook allowed the company to use its "Topic Feed API" that let Geofeedia obtain a "ranked feed of public posts" centered around specific hashtags, places or events.
  • Instagram provided Geofeedia access to its API (Application Programming Interface) that is a feed of data from users' public Instagram posts, including their location.
  • Twitter provided Geofeedia with "searchable access" to its database of public tweets. However, Twitter added additional contract terms in February to try to safeguard further against surveillance, and when found Geofeedia still touting its product as a tool to monitor protests, Twitter sent Geofeedia a cease and desist letter.
Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have all moved to restrict access to Geofeedia after learning about the tool's activities when presented with the study's findings.

Above all, the companies articulate their role as a home for free speech about important social or political issues.

Yet there is a severe disconnect between these positions and the data access they have provided.

Beyond the agreements with Geofeedia, we are concerned about a lack of robust or properly enforced anti-surveillance policies. Neither Facebook nor Instagram has a public policy specifically prohibiting developers from exploiting user data for surveillance purposes. Twitter does have a “longstanding rule” prohibiting the sale of user data for surveillance as well as a Developer Policy that bans the use of Twitter data “to investigate, track or surveil Twitter users.” Publicly available policies like these need to exist and be robustly enforced. Here is what we’re asking of the social networks:

  • No Data Access for Developers of Surveillance Tools: Social media companies should not provide data access to developers who have law enforcement clients and allow their product to be used for surveillance, including the monitoring of information about the political, religious, social views, racial background, locations, associations or activities of any individual or group of individuals.
  • Clear, Public & Transparent Policies: Social media companies should adopt clear, public, and transparent policies to prohibit developers from exploiting user data for surveillance purposes. The companies should publicly explain these policies, how they will be enforced, and the consequences of such violations. These policies should also appear prominently in specific materials and agreements with developers.
  • Oversight of Developers: Social media companies should institute both human and technical auditing mechanisms designed to effectively identify potential violations of this policy, both by the developers and end users, and take swift action for violations.

The government should not have preferred access to social media speech for surveillance purposes. We are confident the companies agree. Facebook and Instagram have already cut off access to Geofeedia and Twitter should do the same. It’s also time for all three of the companies to live up to their words by taking the additional concrete steps.

Instagram arrives on Windows 10 PCs and Tablets

Facebook is expanding the availability of its Instagram Windows 10 app to both PC and tablets. While Instagram first debuted on Windows 10 Mobile back in April, the app was restricted to Microsoft's mobile phones. Instagram's Windows 10 app is a universal app and it's now making its way to PCs and tablets as a result.

As you'd expect, the familiar Instagram features are all supported in Instagram for Windows 10, including access to Instagram Stories, Direct, and Explore. You can also capture, upload, and edit photos, but you'll need a Windows 10 tablet or PC with a touchscreen to be able to actually upload images. It's a bizarre restriction, but devices like Microsoft's Surface Pro and Surface Book work fine for uploading. You can download Instagram for Windows 10 PCs from Microsoft's Windows Store.

Instagram has still not built a tailored app for the iPad, and Apple's tablet users have to use an unoptimized iPhone version.

Robert Downey Jr. volunteer to be the voice of Mark Zuckerberg’s AI

Mark Zuckerberg is pressing ahead with his pet project of creating an AI to control his home, and yesterday he asked for suggestions for who should provide the system’s voice. We all had our own ideas about who would slot into the role best, but few would have anticipated Hollywood A-lister Robert Downey Jr. is willing to volunteer for the job. Stepping forth from Facebook’s billion-strong crowd, the Iron Man actor enthused that he’d "do it in a heartbeat," subject to a convoluted proviso about how his work is to be recompensed and the money channeled toward a good cause. He asks that Paul Bettany, who plays Iron Man’s AI assistant Jarvis, be paid and then donates the proceeds to a cause of Benedict Cumberbatch’s choosing.

Unfazed by the celebrity of his Facebook commenter, Mark Zuckerberg replies only with the words "this just got real." Which may or may not mean that the two will indeed collaborate on Zuckerberg’s hobby activity.

Google will launch dedicated search results for mobile in the next few months

In a few months' time, you might notice getting different sets of search results on a phone and on a computer even if you use the same terms. That's because Google has decided to start indexing mobile websites separately, according to Search Engine Land. Mountain View has been toying with the idea since last year -- the continued growth in the number of mobile users might have finally convinced the tech titan to push through with it. Gary Illyes, the company's trends analyst, has revealed the info at digital marketing conference Pubcon, where he also assured people that Google will still have a desktop index. It just won't be as fresh and as up to date as the one for mobile.

Google is going to create a separate mobile index within months, one that will be the main or “primary” index that the search engine uses to respond to queries. A separate desktop index will be maintained, one that will not be as up-to-date as the mobile index.

The big G launched several other features in the past meant to encourage website owners to tweak their domains for phone users. Last year, it made sure its mobile search results prioritize websites optimized for phones. More recently, it started marking Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) on the results page, so people can choose the website with the fastest loading time.

The most substantial change will likely be that by having a mobile index, Google can run its ranking algorithm in a different fashion across “pure” mobile content rather than the current system that extracts data from desktop content to determine mobile rankings.

Nokia phone reportedly saves a man’s life by stopping bullet

Old Nokia phone device has reportedly saved a man’s life in Afghanistan when a bullet lodged in the Nokia phone proving how robust such devices are.

A tweet shared by a former design executive at Nokia, Peter Skillman who worked on a Nokia Lumia proved that these handsets can indeed handle tough damage – and can even stop a bullet.

This is yet to be confirmed, but Mr Skillman shared the image of the phone which shows how the bullet got stuck in the middle of the phone’s body, demolishing it completely but keeping its user out of danger.

“A Nokia phone I worked on a few years ago saved the life of a man in Afghanistan last week. The embedded bullet,” he wrote.

Mr Skillman said he was unable to disclose the actual victim, but having seen these unbreakable devices first hand, it seems legit. The phone shown in the pic is a Nokia 301, which was released in 2013, according to The Telegraph.

This is not the first time that a phone has reportedly stopped a bullet. Other incidents include a HTC’s Evo 3D saved a store clerk in Florida when an armed robber fired at him while leaving the premises and a Lumia 520 that stopped a bullet from hitting a Brazilian police officer in 2014.

Nokia demonstrates a whopping 65 terabit-per-second DATA transmission

The yesteryears mobile phone king is doing quite well in the telecom sector that can be seen from its latest achievement. Nokia’s Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) Unit said on Wednesday it has set a new record for cable transmission capacity for communications traffic. It managed transmission speeds double its previous levels opening up new opportunities for wireless Internet transmission.

Nokia Bell Labs demonstrated in lab tests a whopping 65 terabit-per-second transmission using dual-band fiber amplifiers. The speed is equivalent of streaming 10 million high-definition TV channels simultaneously.

Nokia’s demonstration is going to help tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Facebook, as well as ISPs and telecom companies due to increased bandwidth demand as Internet reaches more remote places. Research firm Telegeography estimates the market is poised to see an explosion of new cable deployments worth more than $8.1 billion over the next three years.

ASN Chief Technology Officer Olivier Gautheron said that the new transmission lines will be commercially ready to be deployed over the next two to three years. He also added that the new technique promises to help reduce transmission costs, increase network resilience and allow networks to dynamically adapt to changing traffic conditions.

Nokia used the new “Probablistic” modulation technique developed by Bell Labs that allows customers to maximize the capacity of high-speed optical networks or to trade off capacity by extending the distance needed between amplifiers to boost electronic signals in order to reduce network costs.

Nokia Corporation, stylised as NOKIA, is a Finnish multinational communications and information technology company, founded in 1865. Nokia is headquartered in Espoo, Uusimaa, in the greater Helsinki metropolitan area

Samsung shut down production of the Galaxy Note 7 for good

Samsung has "permanently discontinued" production of the Galaxy Note 7. Samsung said that "taking our customer's safety as our highest priority, [so] we have decided to halt sales and production of the Galaxy Note 7," according to the Associated Press. However, it bungled the recall from the beginning by trying to handle the situation internally, rather than getting help from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Given that, it might be hard for consumers to believe that it's concerned about their well-being. More likely, Samsung knows that the Galaxy Note 7's name is forever tarred by the fires, explosions and recalls.

If you're still stuck with a Galaxy Note 7, you should immediately power it down and not use it.
The exact number of phones on the market is unknown, but it had sold about 2.5 million when the first recall was issued.

Even though Galaxy Note 7 production has shut down and the phones should be on their way back to Samsung in fireproof boxes, the question of how everything went so wrong has yet to be answered. When it initiated a recall on September 2nd, the company said that "we conducted a thorough investigation and found a battery cell issue." However, today when it announced a permanent end to manufacturing, there was no word on the problem. A report by the New York Times indicates that despite assigning "hundreds" of employees, they have not been able to reproduce the spontaneously smoky, blazing hot phones too many customers have experienced.

This video obtained by the Associated Press shows a woman in Honolulu with her Galaxy Note 7 as it began to smoke Sunday morning that sent owner to hospital with smoke inhalation. The initial recall focused on phones with batteries built by Samsung's SDI subsidiary and came alongside a software update to limit charging, but that has clearly not solved the problem. While some speculation has centered around USB-C cables or quick charging, there's still no indication of exactly what is wrong.

In an interview with the Times, Park Chul-wan, the former director of the Center for Advanced Batteries at the Korea Electronics Technology Institute, said that based on a review of regulatory documents and speaking to engineers "I think there was nothing wrong with them (batteries) or that they were not the main problem."

That news may be bittersweet for another company: TDK. The Financial Times writes that it was contracted to provide batteries for the replacement models, and the decision to scrap the devices entirely may put a hold on any suggestion that its batteries were to blame. In response to the NYT report, Samsung pointed to its earlier statement about cancelling production.

The Continent of South Africa Now Has First Solar-Powered Airport

The world is still some way from its much-needed renewable energy revolution, but in the meantime, small projects all over the world underscore its potential. One such example can be found in the South African town of George, which now boasts the African continent’s very first entirely solar-powered airport.

As reported by AFP, from the control tower to the baggage carousels, everything is fueled by the Sun beating down on its 2,000 photovoltaic panels. South Africa has on average 2,500 hours of sunshine per year, and the annual 24-hour solar radiation average is over twice that of Europe. Thanks to this, even this airport’s relatively modest solar panels are generating 88 percent more electricity than required.
George Airport seems to be quite proud of itself. Within the terminal building, screens tell passengers just how many hundreds of households its energy infrastructure could actually provide for.

But remarkably, it’s not the world’s first solar-powered airport – that honor goes to Cochin Airport, found in southern India.

Once a private airport for government officials, this transport hub now services a modest 700,000 fliers every single year. Despite the numerous sunny days, there is a backup power grid connected to fossil fuel power generators just in case of the occasional rainy or overcast day triggered by the nearby mountains.

Since the solar panels were installed back in September 2015, the airport has reduced its carbon dioxide emissions by around 1,229 tonnes (1,355 tons). Not only has this saved the climate a teensy little bit, but it has also provided economic benefits to the airport – its electricity bill has been cut by 40 percent already.

This project may be insignificant in terms of the overall global effort to cut down on our carbon footprint, but like Costa Rica running on renewable energy for several months straight or Indonesia tapping its volcanic heat, these ambitious clean energy projects send out a positive message to the world.

Renewable energy is now cheaper, more accessible, and more abundant than ever before, and if anyone – from populous nations to small towns – can utilize it, they should. Solar power itself has come a long way since its inception. Nowadays, advanced solar power plants can power regions for 24 hours a day, and planes harnessing this energy source can circumnavigate the globe.

The Philippines may soon join Asian countries with a high-speed rail system or bullet train

The Philippines may soon join the ranks of Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan among the Asian countries with a high-speed rail system or bullet train. GMA news report.

On the sidelines of an inquiry by the House transportation committee, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Chairman Martin Diño revealed the country's first-ever "bullet train" would be built between Subic in Zambales and Clark in Pampanga.

Diño said the bullet train project will be carried out through a public-private partnership with a Chinese company. He did not name the firm.

Diño said discussions on the railway project would be part of President Rodrigo Duterte's state visit to China on October 18 to 21.

The Clark-Subic bullet train is among the topics President Rodrigo Duterte will discuss with the Chinese when he visits China next week, according to the SBMA official.

"It is our first bullet train. Hopefully, magawa agad," he told reporters.

High-speed trains usually operate at speeds of around 200 km per hour, while Japan's famous bullet trains or shinkansen can run at maximum speeds of more than 300 km/h.

In comparison, trains of the Metro Rail Transit, Light Rail Transit, and Philippine National Railways run at average speeds of 40 km/h

Samsung sending out fireproof return kits for the Galaxy Note 7

Samsung has come up with what's supposed to be a safe solution: a return box that's capable of withstanding extreme heat.

XDA-Developers reports that Samsung has begun sending out the return kits to customers who have gotten in touch about returning their phone.

The return kit includes three boxes and a static shielding bag. The Note 7 is supposed to be slipped into the bag and then enclosed in box after box. It's the outermost box that's most interesting: it's lined with ceramic fiber paper, which is capable of handling extreme heat.

Samsung hasn't precisely detailed what the box is capable of withstanding, but presumably the box is meant to contain a Note 7 that catches fire in transit. Ceramic fiber is often used for insulating furnaces, so withholding a small fire doesn't seem out of the question.

The box also includes specific instructions to only transport it by ground and sea; it is "forbidden" from being taken on an aircraft. Gloves are included in the return kit as well, as Samsung says that some people may be irritated by directed contact with the ceramic fiber lining.

Samsung effectively initiated a worldwide recall of the Note 7 yesterday. It later ended production of new units of the phone.
