Walnut V2s Digital Audio (FLAC/MP3/etc) Players (DAPs AND DAC) Review

Walnut V2s WAV Player by wt

General InformationReviews
  • Pros - Crisp sound - Gobs of power on tap - Can be used as just an amp
  • Cons - Low volume channel imbalance - Slightly grainy upper-mids and treble

Today we're going to be taking a look at a basic DAP/AMP, taking form in the Walnut V2s.
Sometimes all you want is a straightforward, simple to use player. One that's low on features and frills, doesn't take a massive chunk out of your wallet, and doesn't skimp on sound quality. The Walnut V2s does all of this quite well.

Let's check out ,
At the time of this review the V2s retailed price range P1, 000 to P1, 080 available at Shopee ships from overseas.

Specifications:
  1. Supported Formats: FLAC, APE, WAV, MP3
  2. Battery: 1,500 mAh lithium
  3. Battery Life: 15 h
  4. Amp Power Supply: 16v
  5. Drive Capacity: 15-300Ω
  6. Storage: Sd card 32gb max
  7. Can copy files from pc.

More Stuff: Output Uses Elna SILMICII silk capacitor; Input uses EIna Black-neg; Can act as standalone amp if you want

Packaging and Accessories:
A simple device needs a simple package and accessory kit to back it up. In the case of the V2s, you get a plain cardboard box free of any designs or branding and a Micro USB and IC cable. No manual, free black case and pouch. That's it.

Build and Design:
My first thought upon seeing the V2s was that it looked old. Cool, but old. I love the black and while color scheme with cursive writing explaining the function of the five buttons on the face and input/outputs peppered across the unit.
In hand the aluminum shell feels very solid and durable, able to take a kicking from even the most careless of owners. The front and rear plates look to be made of the same PCB material used to make circuit boards. While it doesn't look impressive from a fit and finish perspective, it's a functional and tough as nails material. The only part that feels even remotely fragile is the long, slender power switch out back.
While the V2s is a little thick and weighs about as marlboro lights , it's still small enough to be pocketable. Unless you wear skin tight skinny jeans. That's probably not going to work.

I like it on my pocket because you can press all control inside your pocket without taking out, like skipping songs or folder.

Overall the build and design is more about function over form. The unit feels good in hand with controls that are easy enough to access and understand, so much so it doesn't take long to learn to control it without looking at what you're doing.

Ease of Use, Controls, and EQ:
Once you figure out the V2s' intricacies, it's a very easy to navigate player. However, figuring out it's functions is learned either through trial and error, or online in the forums. Here is what I can share about the controls based on information found on Head-fi, and my own experiences.
Prev: Press once to return to the start of the track. Press twice to skip to the previous track. Hold to prompt the "Last Folder" queue, and hold again to actually skip to the last folder.
Stop: Press once to stop music from playing. Hold to delete the current track.
Next: Press once to skip to the next track. Press and hold to prompt the "Next Folder" queue, and hold again to actually skip to the next folder.
Mode: Press once to let the player run through a single cycle of everything on the memory card. A second press plays everything on random. A third press turns all that off and just plays your tunes in the order loaded on the memory card. Hold down the button to lower the volume digitally.
EQ: Press once for the "Rock" setting. Press twice for "Pop". Press three times for "Classical". Press a fourth time for "Jazz". Hold down to increase the volume digitally.
I found the EQ settings to make a pretty noticeable difference in the presentation.
Rock - increases treble and mid-presence, thins out the sound and improves separation, reduces overall bass quantity; overall a nicely balanced setting that works well with most music
Pop - significantly reduces treble presence and pulls back the mid-range while boosting mid-bass quantity; not a fan of this with anything but extremely bright earphones or headphones as it makes the V2s sound veiled and muddy
Classical - thins out the sound even more than on the 'Rock' setting, adds even more treble, and reduced bass presence even more; not a fan as it is too clinical, sucking out any emotion and impact a track may have had
Jazz - Much like the 'Rock' setting but with a more forward mid-range, more impactful bass, and further improved clarity nearing what the "Classical" setting outputs; my favorite EQ of the bunch and what I left the player on the majority of the time.
BONUS : by removing sd card and pressing EQ you can. Activate the Bluetooth function super short range, because it has no antenna but can be fix by modding and add antenna.
Can be modded: Yes
You can change the Capacitors ( caps from Gigabyte Mother board are good, if you have scrap mobo tips from Mark Ernan).
New stocks are upgraded to Nik on FW gold capacitor series makes the sound softer or gentle. Luckily i got the upgraded version and English version
Op Amp roll, you can change the stock OP amp 8 pin or Dp8 ( if you don't have idead see pics) you can buy op amp DP8 online (Lazada, Shopee or Ali Express)
I like OPA1622 sounds better SQ than Stock NE5532P.. Still want to upgrade to Burson v5iD ðŸ˜œ. Yeah why not..
Customs case, i got my Team Crystal Ship (Version 3.0) V2s on a fully modular and vented clear acrylic case. Reinforced with brass and stainless hex screws case from CryBaby Customs.

You can connect it too on computer and make it a USB external soundcard, can copy files from computer to ur sd card.. No problem on Windows 7 and Windows 10 for me. If you have low quality or low volume laptop sound card this one is good amp.

I like better than my phone.. Boost volume for me.
Awkward moment when guard maken sita of me. Ano pinipindot pindot mo, and I say mp3 po.
Let them think that way, but never tell a boomb joke in public. Kasi naman nasa pinas tayo baka makulong kapa ðŸ˜…..

What’s New in Windows 10’s Anniversary August Update

Windows 10 Anniversary Update. After just a year, Microsoft has managed to update Windows 10 with a solid amount of new features. This is the exact promise of Windows as a service, and it’s encouraging to see it in action.

The Anniversary Update will report itself as version 1607 Build 14393, despite the fact that it technically launched in August instead of July. If you don’t have it yet, try checking for updates in Windows 10’s Settings > Update & Security. You can also start the update manually from Microsoft’s support page click here  to download.

Basically  you will find some difference upon installing the new build example the UI.
Microsoft has also tweaked the Windows 10 UI in more ways than just a dark theme. The all apps list is now an integral part of the Start menu, and Live Tiles are now chase-able. This means if you see something like a news story on a Live Tile, you’ll go directly to that news item when you click the Tile instead of simply opening the homepage of an app.

Windows Defender now has an icon that appears in the notification area and produces more notifications by default. This makes it more clear to average Windows users that Windows 10 has a built-in antivirus protecting them. Windows Defender can also perform a boot-time offline scan to find and remove more nasty malware.

Cortana is also getting a little more intelligent, with the ability to schedule appointments in Outlook or options to send friends a document you were working on a week ago.

Microsoft continues to expand on what Cortana can do, clearly trying to make it the most powerful assistant in an increasingly growing pool of competition (Siri, Google Now, Alexa, and the whole gang). This time around, Cortana comes to the Windows 10 lock screen, so you can invoke her at any time. And, she can push stuff to and from your mobile device, including notifications and text messages. (And remember, since Cortana is available on Android too, that doesn’t mean you need a Windows Phone to take advantage.)

Microsoft has removed the controversial Wi-Fi Sense feature that allowed you to share Wi-Fi network and their passwords with your Facebook, Outlook.com, and Skype contacts. Microsoft never did a good job of explaining this feature–perhaps it would have been more popular and less controversial if Microsoft had. Either way, Microsoft says very few people actually used this feature, so it wasn’t worth the effort to keep it around.

Wi-Fi Sense isn’t completely gone, but it now connects you only to public hotspots. It won’t connect you to a private Wi-Fi network and no longer offers a way to share your Wi-Fi credentials with others. You can find what remains of Wi-Fi Sense under Settings > Network and Internet > Wi-Fi.

Mobile WiFi Hotspot is working  on Laptops too...

I tried to connect my phone and it connect :p

With the Anniversary Update to Windows 10, the automatic time zone switching in OS X it’s finally here. If you’re traveling abroad for vacation then you’ll never have to worry about manually adjusting your PC clock again. It sounds like the most minor feature, but more often than not it’s the small things that add up and make a difference. Microsoft hasn’t enabled the automatic time zone switching by default, so you’ll need to enable it from the settings app.

Microsoft surprised the developer world when it unveiled bash for Windows earlier this year. If you’re a developer then Bash on Windows 10 is a big deal, for everyone else it’s something you won’t really use. Microsoft is essentially adding the Linux command line to Windows 10, and it’s a great addition for Linux developers that need access to all their tools on Windows. It’s an optional Windows feature you’ll need to go in and enable, but once it’s setup you’ll receive updates if Microsoft tweaks it in the future.

The Windows taskbar sees some important improvements, too. The taskbar clock is now integrated with your calendar, so you can click or tap the time and see a list of the calendar events you have scheduled for today. Tap an event–or tap the “+” button to add an event–and the Calendar app will open.

The sound panel is also more useful. You can click or tap the speaker icon and switch between multiple output devices–like speakers and headphones–if you have more than one connected.

Taskbar settings are now integrated into the new Settings app, and you can access them at Settings > Personalization > Taskbar. You can also just right-click the taskbar and select “Settings” to open this new screen.

Microsoft is adding a new "Project to PC" option in Windows 10 Anniversary Update. It’s similar to remote desktop, but it allows you to easily find a PC to project to from a phone or another PC. You’ll be able to project what you see on your own display onto another machine, and use its keyboard, mouse, and other peripherals. It seems like a feature that is more suited to the business environment, especially if you want to show a colleague a document but don’t necessarily want to share the contents directly with them.

Here I test if  my Laptop can project my Flash Plus 2 smartphone screen although my hardware is not build for that  but still it works.

Ok thats all for my review on the latest Windows 10 build. Even with Windows 10 Anniversary Update, Windows 10 isn’t complete. This is just the latest update, and more features and changes are coming later this year and beyond. It feels like the big promise of Windows 10 across multiple devices is finally here, and Microsoft is now building on top of what that means.

Again ooking to install Windows 10 on your PC?

Download and run the media creation tool to get started. For more information on how to use the tool, see the instructions below.

EasyCast OTA Setup - project your mobile phone/MID/Notebook to another big screen through WiFi connection

EasyCast OTA (same of AnyCast) is a special  device  to project your mobile phone/MID/Notebook to another  big screen through WiFi  connection under the popular standards like DLNA, Miracast, Airplay, and Air Mirroring.

Over-the-air programming (OTA) refers to various methods of distributing new software updates, configuration settings, and even updating encryption keys to devices like cellphones, set-top boxes or secure voice communication equipment (encrypted 2-way radios).

You can enhance your TV/Projector/Monitor which have HDMI input port, with more features like streaming video, websurfing, viewing photo, live camera, internet video and more to enjoy excellent multi-display sharing.   Just like a Smart TV!!

Here I have EasyCast OTA from Lazada

What in the Box :
  • EasyCast Device
  • USB cable  and WiFi antenna with micro USB connector to EasyCast
  • Manual

Hardware Installation :

1. Connect the micro USB connector to EasyCast OTA.
2. Connect EasyCast OTA  to the HDMI port of your TV/Projector,  the USB port plug it on USB port of your  TV or Plug it on USB charger - This will be the Power Source to Turn on your EasyCast and make sure it can supply 500mA.

3. Switch your TV to HDMI source.

4. You will see EasyCast OTA main menu on your TV screen.

Click the Internet  Search your WiFi router SSID
Connect your EasyCast to your WiFi router by inserting your WiFi router password

4. When Internet Connection is detected, your EasyCast will update.. proceed the Update...It takes  5 to 10 minutes it depends on your internet speed. You can also setup Default Mode, Connection , Change EasyCast Password, Language etc

Tips: Best way to Cast is Direct Link Only..
On Default Mode  use  Miracast for Android Device  and Airplay for iOS or Apple Device.

After the update it will reboot and your EasyCast  turned to AnyCast.

How to  Use EasyCast OTA:

DLNA MODE or Aiplay Mode

Switch EasyCast OTA dongle to DLNA mode by pressing "Fn" button on the side of the EasyCast OTA dongle device.

DLNA is an industrial standard which allows you to stream multimedia files through WiFi/LAN.

AirPlay you can stream music, photos, and videos to your Apple TV, or stream music to your AirPort Express or AirPlay-enabled speakers.

Your TV screen should be like this when on DLNA mode or Airplay Mode (Apple Device Screen Mirroring)
Tested working even you device do not support Miracasting (android 4.1)

1. Connect Through EZcast app
Enable your Mobile Device WiFi and open your EZcast app and then connect ..

For Apple Device : Connect your iOS device with EasyCast OTA dongle SSID then enable  Mirroring or Airplay ( Check your Manual )

2 . DLNA iMediaShare
Enjoy DLNA function, you can download the APK iMediaShare one of the famous DLNA APK on Google Play.

With DLNA iMediaShare you can Cast local content like Movie, Music,Photos , and even Facebook Photos, on your Big Screen TV.

3. EzChannel on DLNA Mode
I like this feature, you can watch any Youtube Channel , Facebook Videos or watch your Favorite movie etc. You Mobile Device act like just Remote Control select  channel you want . You don't worry about your Mobile being draining  battery life because the Video are streaming from the Internet to your EasyCast device not from your Mobile Phone. You can open new Task while watching  movie.

Even you Lock your Mobile Screen the Video style playing...

Miracast Mode

Switch the EasyCast OTA dongle to Miracast mode by pressing "Fn" button on the side of the EasyCast OTA dongle device.

NOTE:  Some device do not support this feature ( kaya ako bumili ng bago CP Alcatel Flash 2 , on this mode you can also CAST a Video/ Movie on latest Windows 10 , Microsoft EDGE browser also support this)

Your TV screen should be like this when switch to Miracast Mode.

1. Enable WiFi on your mobile device, Go "Setting" menu Go to Display click Cast Screen or find the "Wireless Display", touch it and you will see the EasyCast OTA SSID .

Note:  Different  mobile phone have different operation methods, pls refer to your mobile device manual and find  "Wireless Display"  "WLAN direct"  or "Screen Mirroring" icon.

On my Alcatel Flash 2 Cast Screen is one of the option quick setup on notification menu.

2. Touch the EasyCast OTA SSID  and connect the mobile device with the EasyCast  OTA dongle.
And your mobile device is mirrored to big screen.

Enjoy playing games on the Big Screen...

Or watch movies from your mobile browser to Big Screen. ( But not Good Idea it will drain your battery and you mobile screen should not be interrupted.

Watching "A Second Chance"  papa Popoy and Basha  LOL

Additional Info :
Laptops or Netbook with Windows 8 or Windows 10 OS also support DLNA and  Miracast.

You can directly play any video from Windows PC or Laptop to your TV screen

Media Casting in Microsoft Edge:
You can now use Microsoft Edge to cast video, picture, and audio content from your browser to any Miracast and DLNA enabled device on your network.
