A cybercriminal group of 50 hackers behind $45-M cyberheist arrested in Russia

Hackers behind $45-M cyberheist arrested in Russia

A cybercriminal group of 50 hackers suspected of stealing more than $45 million from multiple Russian banks, financial institutions, and businesses in 2011 has been apprehended in Russia’s largest ever hacker bust.

The group’s arrest prevented the transmission of fake transactions worth over $30 million.
The suspected members of the cybercriminal group using the Lurk Trojan malware were arrested through the combined efforts of the cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab, Russian law enforcement, and Sberbank, one of Russia’s largest banks.

In a press statement released on Friday, Kaspersky said it detected the gang’s activity in 2011, after the hacker group used malware to access and steal money from their victims’ bank accounts.

“Our company’s experts analyzed the malicious software and identified the hacker’s network of computers and servers. Armed with that knowledge the Russian police could identify suspects and gather evidence of the crimes that had been committed,” said Ruslan Stoyanov, head of computer incidents investigation at Kaspersky Lab.

In order to propagate the Lurk Trojan malware, the hackers infected a range of websites, including leading media and news sites. Unsuspecting victims simply had to visit such sites to be infected with the malware. Once inside a victim’s device, the malware would download even more malware that enabled it to steal the victim’s money.

The hacker group also targeted various IT and telecommunications companies, using their servers to remain anonymous.

The malware used by the hackers was unique in that it stored itself in its victim’s random access memory (RAM), making it harder to detect by antivirus software. The hacker group also made use of different VPN services, the anonymous Tor network, and compromised Wi-Fi connections to conceal their malware.

Kaspersky Lab warned companies to pay close attention to their security measures, regularly perform IT infrastructure security checks, and teach employees the basics of responsible cyber-behavior to protect themselves from similar hacker attacks.

They also urged companies to introduce measures to detect attacks.

“The best strategy here is to complement the approach to threat prevention with significant investment in threat detection and response. Even the most sophisticated targeted attacks can be spotted by their abnormal activity when compared to regular business workflow,” Kaspersky Labs said.

28 people were arrested allegedly engaging in international “sextortion” activities on the Internet

Twenty-eight people were arrested in Olongapo City on Wednesday night for allegedly engaging in international “sextortion” activities on the Internet.

The Philippine National Police’s Anti-Cybercrime Group carried out the raid on a building on Rizal Avenue in Barangay West Tapinac after receiving a tip on the alleged sextortion activities. One of them a woman, PNP-ACG director Senior Supt. Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar announced yesterday.

In a report to PNP chief Director General Ricardo C. Marquez, the official said the 28 suspects were found engaged in the business of ‘selling pornographic materials’ or pornographic website links to their clients abroad and later duping them into exposing themselves in front of webcams.

“The suspects are known for blackmailing their victims, demanding money from them or they will upload their videos showing them naked and engaging in sexual acts via Internet,” said the PNP-ACG director. He added that the suspected leader of the ‘sextortion’ gang, identified as one Jay Morete is still being hunted.

The arrests were the latest to be made by the PNP-ACG regarding ‘sextortion’ syndicates in the country, which has been identified as a current hub of ‘sextortion’ syndicates operating in Southeast Asia. Facebook in 2014 tagged the Philippines as the ‘sextortion’ capital of the world.

Eleazar said ‘sextortion’ syndicates would secretly record the victims after tricking them into exposing their bodies or having cybersex, and later threaten to send the video to their relatives and friends unless they paid, usually from $500 to $2,000.

The official said members of the “sextortion” group would create fake Facebook accounts of fictitious young and attractive women and entice and lure victims with pornographic materials after striking up online chats with them.

“After getting acquainted with the victims... they engage in cybersex, and this will be recorded unknown to the victims. After that, they will threaten to release it to friends and relatives,” Eleazar said, while noting that elderly men and even children have been targeted by syndicates.

The official said the suspects were arrested at the 3rd floor of a building on Rizal Ave., Bgy. West Tapinac, Olongapo City, which was raided by his men on the strength of a search warrant for violation of the Cybercrime Prevention Act 2012 issued by Judge Ramon D. Pamular of the Guimba, Nueva Ecija Regional Trial Court Branch 32.

The suspects will be charged for violation of Section  4(c)1 (Cybersex) Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act before of the Prosecutor’s Office, Department of Justice, Manila.

How To Calibrate Android Device Battery Stats ( Root/No Root)

What this procedure achieves is to rest the battery stats file so your battery should now be calibrated.
Battery problems are among the biggest concerns for smartphone users, which is why we offer so many useful tips for solving battery drain issues. If you notice that your battery performance and duration has decreased, it could be time to calibrate your battery. Today we'll explain what battery calibration is, how to tell if you need to do it and how to do it, with or without root access.

The Android operating system has a feature called Battery Stats, which keeps track of battery capacity, when it is full or empty. The problem is that it sometimes becomes corrupted and starts displaying data that isn’t real, which, for example, causes the phone to turn off before it reaches 0 percent. Calibrating your Android battery simply means getting the Android OS to correct this information so it is reflective of your actual battery levels once again.

How to calibrate an Android device battery without root access

The old 'fully charge and discharge' approach stands as one of the simplest ways to 'recalibrate' your Android battery. We've warned you in the past about low voltage problems in lithium batteries and the negative impacts of fully draining a battery on its lifespan and the same holds true here. But if your phone battery is causing you real problems, it's worth taking the risk.

Just follow the steps below:

  • Let your phone discharge until it goes off due to low battery.

  • Charger your battery until it reach 100%. Do not turn on your device while charging!.

  • Unplug your charger and turn your phone on.

  • Leave it lying for 30 minutes then charge it again for an hour. Don't use your device while it is plugged in.

  • Unplug your device and use normally until the battery is completely drained again.

  • Then charge it to 100% again.

How to calibrate Android device battery with root access

Even though I'm not convinced that clearing the batterystats.bin file has any meaningful effect on how the Android system reports remaining battery charge, there are those who swear by this method.

So in the interests of fairness, we've included the process for you here (it is true that different manufacturers use the batterystats.bin file for different things). It's basically the same process as above but with the added step of a root-enabled app.

1. Discharge your phone fully until it turns itself off.

2. Turn it on and let it turn off again.

3. Plug your phone into a charger and, without turning it on, let it charge until the on-screen or LED indicator says 100 percent.

4. Unplug your charger.

5. Turn your phone on. It's likely that the battery indicator won't say 100 percent, so plug the charger back in (leave your phone on) and continue charging until it says 100 percent on the screen as well.

6. Unplug your phone and restart it. If it doesn't say 100 percent, plug the charger back in until it says 100 percent on screen.

7. You want to repeat this cycle until it says 100 percent (or as close as you think it's going to get) when you start it up without being plugged in.

8. Now, install the Battery Calibration app and, before you launch it, make sure your battery is at 100 percent again, then restart.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nema.batterycalibration&referrer=utm_source%3DAndroidPIT%26utm_medium%3DAndroidPIT%26utm_campaign%3DAndroidPIT

9. Immediately launch the app and recalibrate your battery.

10. Once you've calibrated your battery, discharge it all the way down to 0 percent and let your phone turn off again.

11. Fully charge the battery one more time without interruption while it's switched off, and the Android system's battery percentage will be reset.

Remember that it is not recommended to perform this process all the time. Even when your battery is so dead your phone won't even turn on, your battery still has enough reserve charge to avoid system damage. But you don't want to poke the tiger with a stick. Perform this process once every three months at the most. If it is required more often than that you have bigger problems at hand.

Smartphone battery myths

Lithium-ion batteries don't have a memory so there's not much you need to do to keep them running as they should. The problem lies with how the Android system reads and displays the current capacity of the battery, not the battery itself.

The same goes for the myth that deleting the batterystats.bin file will magically recalibrate your battery. That file (on most devices anyway) simply stores data about what is using the battery when it is not being charged. It is also reset every time a battery is charged to over 80 percent and then disconnected.

The batterystats.bin file contains the info you see made prettier in the Battery section of your phone: it's the Android system keeping track of your battery's usage, per charge cycle. When we talk about battery calibration, it's the percentage meter that gets out of whack, and that is what we need to fix.

Conclusion:
Put plainly: fully discharging a battery is bad for it. Trying to overload a battery is also bad for it. The good news is that charging batteries automatically shut off when their safe limit is reached and there's always a little in reserve even if your phone won't start. But again: do this only when really necessary, because it does have a negative impact on battery life.

Facebook has taken down the post of journalist Ed Lingao Anti-Marcos sentiment

ANTI-MARCOS SENTIMENT  against the burial of former President Ferdinand Marcos.
Facebook has taken down a television anchor's post critical of plans to allow the burial of dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes' Cemetery), supposedly because the post violated the social network's community standards.

Lingao said that it was the second time his post was removed.
For the third time on Wednesday, he posted the same post, which Facebook earlier deleted.

In his post, Lingao questioned the decision of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte to allow the burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

Duterte has said that burying Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani would allow the healing of the nation, which he said has been long divided by the said issue.

But Lingao justified why the former president should not be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, citing his human rights abuses and ill-gotten wealth.

“YOU WANT him buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani? Very well, but on the headstone, put the name William Saunders. That is the name he used to open his first Swiss account, that later mushroomed to a dozen,” his post read.

During the Marcos regime, he said tens of thousands were victims of human rights abuses and at least $10 billion were  been stolen by the Marcos family.

“So really, who should move on and allow healing? The thousands who were victimized? The prosecutors still looking for another five billion dollars in hidden wealth? Or a family that chooses to ignore all this by funding a macabre quarter-century spectacle at the family mausoleum in Ilocos because it simply insists that the patriarch be buried a hero. Who is really holding the nation hostage here? And so, really, who should move on?” Lingao said.

He said the issue of burying Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani is a moral issue.

“The rules governing the use of the Libingan are just executive in nature, and the commander-in-chief can of course order that the rules be changed. It is not a legal question at all, but a moral one,” he said.

After his third post, Lingao said he was barred from posting any status for one day.

Lingao said Facebook’s action of taking down his post was “ridiculous.”

“It was really ridiculous. Anyone who has read the post can tell you that it was quite subdued. I think the points were also reasonably argued,” he said.

“I find it alarming that Facebook’s community standards do not appear to be well thought out,” he added.

He said he was wondering whether Facebook “makes decisions like these based only on the number of complaints, in which case the group with the most number of trolls can control FB content.”

Aside from Lingao, other journalists’ Facebook accounts were suspended after sharing his post.

Lingao also said that a follow-up post on his account, where he described the comments he received on the original post, was also deleted.

On Wednesday afternoon, Lingao reposted the first post. But he has since been blocked from making further posts on his Facebook account for at least 24 hours.

Meanwhile, journalist Inday Espina-Varona said that her brother, Nonoy Espina, and other colleagues from media also found their Facebook accounts suspended after sharing Lingao's post. Link Post

Sought for comment, Facebook said it is now looking into the matter.

“We are looking into this now,” said Ken Teh, Facebook media partnerships in the Asia Pacific region.

According to Facebook's community standards, the following kinds of posts are not allowed on the social network, and may be removed by site administrators: hate speech, violence and graphic content, nudity, bullying and harassment, direct threats, attacks on public figures, criminal activity, sexual violence and exploitation, dangerous organizations, regulated goods, and self-injury, among others.

Content reviewers look over posts reported for violating community standards.

The site, however, said that the number of reports on a particular post "does not impact whether something will be removed," and added that it does not remove content "simply because it has been reported a number of times."

If you remember  U.S. Internet giants Facebook Inc., Twitter Inc., Google and Microsoft Corp. pledged to tackle online hate speech in less than 24 hours as part of a joint commitment with the European Union to combat the use of social media by terrorists. (Tuesday Post May 31)

Blog My Tuts RSS Reader - Android App

Most of the readers of this blog are fairly tech savvy, so will probably already know what RSS is. It stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is a way for people to subscribe to the exact content they want from your (and other) sites by pulling it from an XML file on your site into a reader (such as Bloglines).

The internet is overloaded with content. Even if you only set out to read the most important articles and watch the top videos, you'll never get done.

Just staying up-to-date and informed is a challenge. You have news to read, blogs to check, and YouTube hits you've got to watch. But instead of opening each site a half-dozen times a day, you can use an RSS app to curate your content automatically.

There's two main types of RSS readers: online RSS services, and native RSS apps. The former run automatically in the background, finding new articles as soon as they're published. You can read articles online, or typically sync them with apps for your phone or computer—either made by the RSS service, or from third-party developers.

BMT RSS Reader is a native RSS apps for Android you can get the latest post form blogmytuts.net , plus Android Central, Symbianize, and Engadget.

Within the post instant share, translate, copy link, and change theme/text size.

Feature! You can Add custom Podcast, weblinks or RSS on the Explorer Menu. Now you have 1 app Reader to all.

Tutorial How to Stop Google Chrome from Running in the Background

Google Chrome  have been sapping up system resources leading to performance issues. People with low-end devices have to think twice before opening a new Chrome tab. This is a big problem while Chrome is running, and it seems Chrome keeps haunting us even when it is closed.

Chrome's battery drain problem was brought to wider attention by Forbes contributor Ian Morris, who noticed that Chrome for Windows was using considerably more power than other browsers.

The issue, he wrote, is that Chrome doesn't return the system's processor to an idle state when it's not doing anything. Instead, Chrome sets a high “system clock tick rate” of 1 millisecond, and leaves it at that rate, even if the browser's just running the background

By default Chrome allows applications/extensions to keep running in the background to provide their services like updates and notifications. This is handy for keeping you updated with notifications on Facebook or a new email in Gmail. However, it eats up system resources even when you don’t want to be updated. In this post we will show you how you can stop Chrome from running background apps.

Before we stop this background service of Chrome, it is good to know both the good and bad sides to make a wise decision.

The Good
When you install an extension or use a web service that provides continuous updates, they may be capable of running in the background to offer notifications even when Chrome is closed. This allows you to always be updated and to take action right from the Chrome notifications. It’s really handy actually, and if you don’t want to leave your online life behind when you hit the close button, it does a great job of keeping you updated with important stuff. Turning this feature off means you will not be able to get updates on your PC and may lose important notifications.

The Bad
While Chrome is running in the background, it is using system resources and slowing down the system. For example, if you exit Chrome to get some resources to play a heavy video game, this little background service will get in your way and may not let you have the best experience. Furthermore, constant notifications may also be annoying for some people, especially if you are very active on social media platforms. Some people also want to completely leave their online life behind when they press the close button on Chrome, but this will keep bugging them even when Chrome is closed.
Disable Apps from Running in the Background

You can stop Chrome from running in the background from the Chrome settings. Below are step-by-step instructions.

1. Click on Chrome’s main menu and select “Settings.”

2. Scroll down and click on “Show advanced settings.”

3. Scroll down to the extreme bottom and uncheck the option “Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed” under the “System” heading.

This will stop Chrome from running any apps in the background and will exit properly when you click on the close button. At any time later if you want to receive notifications, just go to “Settings” again and enable this feature.

If you are tired of Chrome eating up resources in the background, then you can follow the above instructions to easily stop Chrome from running in the background. If there is a particular notification that is bugging you, then turning this feature off completely isn’t necessary. You can also disable the extension or disable “desktop notifications” in the settings of the service.

Local Update/Downgrade for Alcatel Flash 2 From v3.8 to v3.1 - NO ROOT

How to Downgrade Alcatel Flash from version 3.8 to 3.1

I made this tutorials because I'm a Alcatel Flash 2 user, and maybe some of you do want the old firmware like  3.1 or 3.2 but other will stay for version 3.8 because it has a fix video for front camera -no grainy.  But v3.8 front camera has some like beautification like camera 360 effect it's not natural anymore. On the other hand some user want the 3.2 for front and rear/back better camera, forget the video anyway.   Version 3.6 has 2 second  default timer for front cam. The 2 seconds timer affects some  video apps like Musically, Because it set to capture within 2 second you will lose your 2 seconds on your Musically video.

This tutorial is for  NO ROOT ( di ako rooted )

You can find this tuts on FB group post at : https://www.facebook.com/groups/AlcatelOneTouchPHOfficial

NOTE: Before doing Local Update or FOTA  make sure your battery has 40% to 50% charge (battery life) if you has less than 30% the update or downgrade will not continue.

Question:
If I downgrade from 3.8 to 3.1 , will all my file and apps will deleted?

Answer:
No all your apps and file will remains if you do Local Update / FOTA, unlike on SPT or Flashing Firmware all your files will be deleted

The Downgrade always start on Version 3.1 ,  example you are v3.8 user and you want v3.2. You cannot proceed it will fail you must have v3.1 first.

I recommend use download manager to completely download the full file size. After that save it on your SDcard  Goto Setting About Phone  find Wireless Update, click the upper right menu (3 dot). Click Local updates browse the 3.1 firmware.

Giant Social Media Vow to Tackle Online Hate Speech Within 24 Hours

U.S. Internet giants Facebook Inc., Twitter Inc., Google and Microsoft Corp. pledged to tackle online hate speech in less than 24 hours as part of a joint commitment with the European Union to combat the use of social media by terrorists.

Beyond national laws that criminalize hate speech, there is a need to ensure such activity by Internet users is “expeditiously reviewed by online intermediaries and social media platforms, upon receipt of a valid notification, in an appropriate time-frame,” the companies and the European Commission said in a joint statement on Tuesday.

The code of conduct arrives as Europe comes to terms with the bloody attacks in Paris and Brussels by Islamic State, which has used the Web and social media to spread its message of hate against its enemies. The companies said it remains a “challenge” to strike the right balance between freedom of expression and hate speech in the self-generated content on online platforms.

“We remain committed to letting the Tweets flow,” said Twitter’s head of public policy for Europe, Karen White, in the statement. “However, there is a clear distinction between freedom of expression and conduct that incites violence and hate.”

In the course of about six weeks in April and May, members of French anti-discrimination groups flagged unambiguous hate speech that they said promoted racism, homophobia or anti-Semitism. More than 90 percent of the posts pointed out to Twitter and YouTube remained online within 15 days on average following requests for removal, according to the study by UEJF, SOS Racisme and SOS Homophobie.

“With a global community of 1.6 billion people we work hard to balance giving people the power to express themselves whilst ensuring we provide a respectful environment,” said Monika Bickert, head of global policy management at Facebook, in the statement. “There’s no place for hate speech on Facebook.”

MVP : New 700MHz Frequency (4G Extended) Better Indoor Signal within 6 Months

According to PLDT Chair  Manny V. Pangilinan  (MVP) Press Briefing on PLDT's acquisition of the telecommunications business of San Miguel. "Brand new day fro Ph Internet. We now have access to additional frequencies including 700MHz. SMART can bring stronger internet to all soon." He said consumers should feel the effects of the deal within six months. This will be limited to those using high-end devices, since mobile devices that allow the use of the spectrum is still small.

On a separate Press briefing Globe Telecom also announce additional frequencies within 700MHz spectrum.

Smart Communications Inc. fired up the first three cell site supporting the 700MHz frequency (4G Extended)

You can watch the recorded live stream here.

WE already use 4G spectrum 1800MHz and continued with 4G spectrum at 2600MHz (gamit ng LTE Modem) in Philippines.  4G is the 4th generation of mobile technology.

This is the network the best mobile phones were made for.
  • Streaming HD video
  • Gaming in real time, not delayed time
  • Download an album in the time it used to take for a single track
  • Instantly open large attachments and files

photo source on smart communication page

Now what is 700MHz ?

The 4G spectrum at 700MHz called 4G Extended. This provides better coverage in rural locations and is more effective at penetrating walls and buildings. The 700MHz spectrum used to be reserved for free-to-air TV (specifically UHF channels 52 through 69), the old analogue network that’s now been shut down and as such has been relicensed to us to use on mobile networks.

HOW IT WORKS?

Today I’m going to take you through the mobile spectrum and in particular 700Mhz and how it affects you. On the screen now is the wireless spectrum. This is basically the area we’re allowed to use in the wireless network. On the bottom you can see the AM Radio and FM Radio spectrum that we all love rocking out to.

In purple is the TV spectrum, this is where you get your free-to-air and in the middle we’ve got the mobile spectrum. That’s the 700MHz – 2600MHz spectrum and that’s where we’re allowed to play. And right at the top you’ve got your home Wi-Fi.

Now if you were paying attention you’ll notice that the mobile spectrum that we’re allowed to use overlaps with the TV spectrum – the 700MHz Network and that’s a new network that was released on the 1st of January 2008. If you’re wondering how a new mobile spectrum’s just been released the government decides where we can and can’t play and a new spectrums we can use.

So looking now we’ve got the spectrum we’re allowed to play in. The 700MHz – 2600MHz and the way it all works with spectrum is it’s measured in frequencies, much like music is. The low music, like the bass is the stuff that carries through.

So when your neighbours are having a party that’s what you can hear thumping through your walls. It’s the same with mobile networks – the 700MHz spectrum and lower frequencies have really good coverage and really good penetration. 2600MHz on the other hand has the higher capacity. So when you have 700MHz you don’t just have 700MHz, there’s a whole range of spectrums that they can use within that band.

On the bottom of the cake you’ve got the 700MHz spectrum and that’s really creating the base layer, it’s really giving you that coverage and filling in the gaps.

How does this work in the real world you ask? You can see the 1800MHz and where you have 1800MHz you get beautiful 4G but then there’s gaps and you drop down to 3G and when we add a building (see below) that creates even more for the 1800MHz to go through so sometimes you’re going to lose your 1800MHz there and drop down to 3G inside the building and all these things make us sad.

When we add the new 700MHz as you can see below it adds the extra layer to fill in the gaps for the 1800MHz as well as covering the inside of the building with 4G because it now has the power to punch through the walls, which means everyone’s happy.

Operating mobile Internet services under the 700 MHz spectrum is cheaper and more efficient than operating under higher-frequency bands.
Using 4G in these locations requires a device that supports 4G Extended. OK not all devices or modem support this new Frequency.

See our range of 4G phones below

Does my phone support 4G Extended?

All devices listed here work with 4G Extended at 700MHz, 4G at 1800MH and at 2600MHz :

Globe LTE Support: FDD 1800MHz (Band 3), FDD 2600MHz (Band 7), TDD 2500MHz (Band 41)
Smart LTE Support: Band 1 (2100MHz), FDD 1800MHz (Band 3), Band 5 (850MHz)

Between the two, the most highly used bands are in the 1800MHz and 2100MHz, plus the upcoming 700MHz. Here are all the devices that are supported.
