Stardock Announced Start10 Bring Back Windows 7 Startmenu on Windows 10

Plymouth, MI – August 12, 2015 – Today Stardock announced the release of Start10, an easy-to-use program that returns the Windows 10 start menu to a more familiar look and feel.

Windows 10 has brought back a start menu, but the focus is heavily on apps, which are preloaded and pre-organized and are viewed as tiles rather than in the simple list of programs in Windows 7. The start menu is there, but consumers may feel the brunt of this app-focused layout. Start10 returns the familiar start menu to Windows 10, and allows for additional look and feel customization with just the couple of clicks of a mouse.

Start10 also maintains the familiar “folders” metaphor. Right now in the Windows start menu everything is listed in alphabetic order, which can make the start menu quite long, whereas in previous versions of Windows applications like Word, Excel and the other Office applications were found in the “Microsoft Office” folder on the start menu.

In Windows 10 the search bar has been taken out of the start menu and placed on the task bar. Start10 allows you to have the search functionality back in your start menu.

Start10 is only $4.99. For more information about Start10, please visit www.start10.com.

For more information about other desktop customization and productivity applications made by Stardock, visit www.objectdesktop.com.

New Firefox 40.0 Can Use Cortana Web Search

Firefox 40.0 sticks it to Microsoft, redirects Cortana searches in Windows 10. Users who set Firefox as their default browser can use Cortana web search with whatever search engine they want, instead of just Bing.

However, the newly released Firefox 40, which is the first version of the browser that bring full support for Microsoft’s latest operating system, users no longer have to use Bing for web searches from Cortana on the taskbar.

Instead, Firefox shows results from whatever search engine the user has selected as default.

READ: How to Change Windows 10 Default Web Browser

Now that’s what you call, sticking it!

If you upgrade to 40.0 this link will pop out  https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/windows-10/welcome/

Obviously, Firefox is not the only way to replace Cortana searches from Bing to Google, or whatever search engine. However, it is currently the only browser that does this without requiring third-party extensions or plugins.

Stands to reason that Redmond wants to use the Windows platform to establish and promote Microsoft services, particularly the Bing search engine. Competitors were never going to let this happen without a little fight, and that’s the reality of the computing landscape.

Mozilla is irked by the fact that Windows 10, in its installation process, sets Edge as the default browser for anyone that uses the Express settings. Furthermore, replacing it without another choice is a bit harder this time.

At least for less experienced users.

That said, Mozilla is one of the few browser developers that have embraced the new Windows 10 platform. This latest release of Firefox includes what they call thoughtful tweaks to the user interface.

Bolder icons, a look that is more in line with Microsoft’s new OS, as well as menus that take a little less space than previews versions of the web browser, leaving more room for web content.

What is DDR4

DDR4 is a new memory standard designed to eventually replace DDR3. While it¡¯s true that when running at the JEDEC specified speeds of 2133MHz and 2400MHz DDR4¡¯s higher latencies may produce slightly lower performance clock-for-clock than DDR3, DDR4 is designed to reliably run at much higher speeds that more than offset the increased latency. In virtually every way, DDR4 is superior to DDR3: it¡¯s capable of being much faster, more efficient, more scalable, and even more reliable. As for cost, much like the transitions to DDR, DDR2, and DDR3, DDR4 will become progressively cheaper as economies of scale take effect. Physically, a DDR4 module, or DIMM, is very similar to a DDR3 DIMM. DDR4 can use a slightly taller printed circuit board and ups the pin count from DDR2 and DDR3¡¯s 240 pins to 288. The key notch (to ensure the DIMM is not improperly installed) is also in a different place, and the overall shape of the connector has a slight "V" contour to aid installation. Architecturally, DDR4 is designed to operate at higher speeds and capacities with lower voltage and adds reliability features not present in DDR3.

Why Do We Need DDR4?

When DDR4 is introduced, the initial 2133MHz and 2400MHz speeds will be accompanied by another increase in latency, just as each previous memory technology transition has been. These speeds are essentially the top of the ladder for DDR3, though; while DDR3 kits can be obtained at speeds as high as 3200MHz, ICs capable of performing at those levels are extremely rare. Meanwhile, DDR4 is expected to scale well beyond 3200MHz. What DDR4 offers is scalability for the future: individual DIMM densities start at 4GB and 8GB and are expected to scale to 16GB in 2015. Bandwidth is also capable of scaling uptremendously. 2666MHz DDR3 isn¡¯t especially common right now; it operates outside of JEDEC spec and requires carefully selected ICs, yet already situations exist that demonstrate a need for increased bandwidth beyond that speed. DDR4 comes out of the gate at 2400MHz, with 2666MHz, 2800MHz, and 3000MHz SKUs already planned.

Finally, DDR4 operates at a nominal 1.2V and scales up to 1.35V, a reduction in operating power from DDR3¡¯s 1.5V standard and 1.65V mainstream high performance spec. Power efficiency has become increasingly important with each subsequent generation of CPU and GPU architecture from Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA, and DDR4 helps to enable that.

DDR4 in Detail

As previously mentioned, the primary benefits of DDR4 are increased bandwidth, a reduction in power consumption, increased density, and improved reliability.

Increased Bandwidth

While DDR3 kits are available all the way up to 3000MHz, JEDEC only specifies operating speeds up to 2133MHz. Scaling beyond that requires exceptionally high performance ICs, making higher speeds harder and harder to obtain. In memory bandwidth bound applications (such as Adobe Media Encoder and Handbrake), 4th Generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors demonstrate performance scaling all the way up to 2400MHz. This is arguably a limitation of the DDR3 spec, which was never intended to scale this high.

DDR4 is being introduced to the mainstream at 2133MHz and 2400MHz, but the specification allows scaling well beyond that. Launch speeds are as high as 3000MHz, and keep in mind that this is only in the first year. While DDR4 inherits DDR3¡¯s timing methods and will feature another bump in timing latencies similar to the one DDR3 received from DDR2, substantial internal architectural changes and tighter yield specifications allow it to achieve an overall increase in potential bandwidth with room to continue scaling.

Scaling beyond that requires exceptionally high performance ICs, making higher speeds harder and harder to obtain. This is arguably a limitation of the DDR3 spec, which was never intended to scale this high.

Increased Density

DDR4¡¯s architecture was specified to allow for considerably higher IC and DIMM densities than DDR3¡¯s. Mainstream DDR3 DIMMs currently scale to 8GB, but a modified DDR3 specification (Load Reduction DIMM) allows for an increase to 16GB or 32GB DIMMs. This is unfortunately only visible chiefly on the enterprise side; while AMD¡¯s processors can handle 16GB DIMMs, current generation mainstream Intel processors can¡¯t support individual DDR3 DIMMs larger than 8GB.

The limitations of capacity in DDR3 are addressed from several angles in the DDR4 specification, with each contributing to an overall massive improvement in potential density. First, while a DDR3 IC is specified for up to eight internal banks, DDR4 doubles this number to 16 while also organizing them into four addressable bank groups (improving overall performance and efficiency). DDR4 also increases the potential density of the IC itself, all the way up to 16Gb.

Improved Reliability

One benefit of DDR4 not often mentioned but worth discussing is the overall improved reliability and stability. While reliability and stability are appreciated on the consumer side of the market, they¡¯re vital on the enterprise side. The additions to the DDR4 specification that address this benefit everyone. First, DDR4 implements a CRC, or cyclic redundancy check. As operating frequencies scale, the potential for write errors to memory increases. Employing the CRC allows for real-time write error detection and can correct intermittent errors, as well as enabling more robust error reporting to the system itself. Command and address parity error detection and recovery have also been added to DDR4, and changes to the DDR4 register allow it to block commands upon detection of a parity error. While DDR3 would pass those commands on to the DRAM itself, DDR4 essentially stops them at the gate.

Operating temperature is a well known inhibitor with most computing technologies, as high temperatures can reduce signal clarity and produce errors. DDR4¡¯s thermals can be monitored and its timings adjusted to account for changes in temperature, though this is only expected to be implemented in SODIMMs where heat becomes a more serious issue.

Conclusion

Much like each memory technology transition that preceded it, DDR4¡¯s value upon introduction may seem nebulous compared to the incumbent DDR3. DDR2 operating at the same frequency as mainstream DDR was slightly slower, DDR3 had the same issue with DDR2, and DDR4 will have the same issue with DDR3. This is expected; each transition meant slightly looser timings. Yet each time, the newer specification was implemented less to improve the present and more to meet the needs of the future. DDR4 is no exception. Where DDR4 does deviate substantially from its predecessors is in how dramatic the changes in specification and architecture are. Each iteration of DDR memory brought with it the same three improvements: increased speed, increased density, and reduced power. The differences in scale, however, are massive, and DDR4 in particular is the most spectacular leap yet.

Apple Music Went Wrong

Nearly a month after Apple’s streaming music service launched, popular Apple commentator Jim Dalrymple declared Apple Music a nightmare.

Dalrymple detailed how his personal music library was a mess after enabling Apple Music’s matching service. Songs were missing, duplicated, or placed in the wrong album altogether.

After countless hours of trying to correct the problem, Dalrymple eventually just turned off Apple Music across all of his devices. The result? 4,700 songs disappeared into thin air, or so it appeared.

A few days after his scathing post, Dalrymple met with Apple in an attempt to troubleshoot his problems. That helped some, but he was still missing roughly 100 songs; he has been assured by Apple the rest of his issues will be addressed soon.

Widespread problems

He’s not the only one experiencing issues with Apple Music, however. Other commentators have complained. And regular users have too: Take one look at the official Apple Music support community and you’ll quickly find lots of similar complaints.

“I’ve noticed Apple Music has downloaded random tracks [to] my Music library,” one user wrote. Another aired frustration about adding music to the My Music section of the service, only to find the music was never truly added (or if it was, only partial albums were added).
User JSdaSM poses the one question on everyone’s mind, “Whatever happened to ‘it just works’?” when talking about Apple products.

Example about after listening to a John Mayer album suggested in Apple’s Music’s For You section, I decided to give it another listen later in the day. I already owned the album, so I pulled it up in the My Music section only to find duplicate songs within the album. As you can see, some of those copies are stored locally on my computer, while others are now available in the cloud.

Why, Apple? Why?

Let’s say for argument’s sake that such problems can — at least in part — be blamed on the the learning process for new users. The interface for the iOS Music app has to be one of the most confusing layouts Apple has ever produced, so maybe we just don’t know what we’re doing yet.

The Wall Street Journal aptly described the Music interface as “Russian nesting dolls: menus within menus within menus.” Maybe, just maybe, those random tracks being added to music libraries are due to user errors brought on by a confusion.

What you can do about it

So what does all this mean to you, the user? You have a few options:

  • If you already signed up for the free three-month trial, you can't quit it. But you can make sure it doesn't auto-renew: For example, on an iPhone, you can go to Settings > iTunes & App Store, enter your Apple credentials, tap View Apple ID, select Subscriptions then Manage, and turn Automatic Renewal off.
  • In the meantime, you can hide Apple Music: First, be sure you have an up-to-date backup of your local music library. Then find Show Apple Music in your desktop or mobile settings, and turn it off.
  • Get educated. There've been plenty of how-to stories written about how to safely manage your library while using Apple's various services (Apple Music, iTunes Match, iCloud Music Library). A couple of Web searches should help you solve any problems you might run into. But let us repeat: Have a good back-up of your music files before you do anything.
  • Help Apple fix things by giving the company feedback about your experiences, good or bad, using the company’s feedback portal. That site currently lacks an Apple Music category, but you can still submit feedback by selecting iTunes in the OS X Apps section.

There’s a bit of a silver lining right now: Users have yet to pay a single dime for Apple Music. By the time the initial three-month trial period is up and users have to decide whether the service is worth $10 a month, Apple will have had plenty of time to fix the issues. That doesn’t excuse the problems you might be having, but it does take out some of the sting.

What is Fibr?

Fibr is the future of broadband currently being used by international telephone operators like Verizon (US), BT Infinity (UK), etc. This is the most advanced broadband service in the country that connects to the home via fiber-optic lines.

Traditional broadband services are usually through legacy copper lines, or cable. PLDT Fibr’s use of fiber-optic cables guarantees the fastest and most stable internet connection for you.

What Fibr can do is to allow your entire family to enjoy simultaneous high-speed browsing and high definition downloading without experiencing any speed lags.

What is the difference between Fibr and DSL?

Speeds from 12-100 Mbps or greater can be achieved with a fiber-optic enabled broadband connection. This means faster download speeds, video streaming and an over-all faster internet connection.

What is difference between Fibr and a Wireless Broadband service?

Wireless broadband services using USB dongles and other USB-connected devices use sim-cards and GPRS, 3G, HSPA, HSDPA, 4G or WIMAX technologies to connect to the Internet. These technologies require open space in order to get the maximum signal possible, some even require line-of-sight. While extremely portable, wireless broadband services still utilize different frequencies in use with cellular networks hence the quality of Internet experience is dependent on the strength of the signal, your location, weather conditions, etc. A fast, CONSISTENT connection may never be achieved using a wireless broadband service.

Fibr’s broadband service use fiber-optic cables which are capable of higher speeds. This means much faster & more stable internet connection for you.

Meet Firefox Hello, the easiest way to connect for free over video with anyone, anywhere

You can now make free video and voice calls directly from your Web browser without having to set up an account, thanks to Mozilla.

The browser maker introduced Firefox 35, which includes the new Hello video-calling feature first introduced in beta this past October. You'll see the new Hello icon in the menu bar and in the customization panel; simply click the button labeled "Start a conversation" to begin chatting with someone.

When you start a conversation, a new window will open showing a self-view until the other person clicks the link to join you. While you're waiting for the other person to pick up the call, you can navigate away from the video chat window to a different website, and Hello will notify you when your friend has joined the room.

Each conversation will use a unique URL, and you can create multiple conversations and name them for different occasions. Mozilla said this should make it easier to go back to the people you speak to regularly without having to create a new link each time.

"This can all be done without the need for setting up an account or giving up any of your personal information," the Mozilla team wrote in a blog post Tuesday. "You might label one conversation '121' for your weekly check-in with a co-worker and another 'Family time' for your regular family catch-up. Your saved conversations will always be there when you need them."

The person on the other end of the line doesn't even have to be using Firefox. The service lets you connect with those using Chrome and Opera as well.

You can also sign in with a Firefox account so contacts will know you're online, and import additional contacts to your Hello address book from Google. To do so, select "Import Contacts" from the address book then sign into your Google account to give permission.

Mozilla has been developing Hello with Spanish telecom giant Telefónica, and said it's just getting started. "As we look to expand Firefox Hello into a comprehensive tool for communicating over the Web, we'll be testing new features like screen sharing and online collaboration so people can be more productive and get the most out of their video calls," the team wrote.
