Facebook is improving its technology to better identify pirated videos

On Thursday, Facebook said it would be deploying new video matching technology that will be available to a small group of partners. The tool, Facebook said, will let select media companies, multichannel networks and individual video creators identify matches of their videos posted across Pages, profiles, groups and geographies on the site.

The tool will evaluate millions of video uploads quickly. When matches surface, publishers will be able to report them to Facebook for removal, the company said in a blog post.

An Update on Video Management on Facebook

Aug 27, 2015
Over the past year, video has grown quickly and significantly on Facebook. We’re seeing more videos being shared by people, publishers and advertisers than ever before. For publishers in particular, our community of nearly 1.5 billion people means video creators are able to reach a vast audience and cultivate relationships with new fans on the platform.

At the same time, we’ve heard from some of our content partners that third parties too frequently misuse their content on Facebook. For instance, publishers have told us that their videos are sometimes uploaded directly to Facebook without their permission. This practice has been called “freebooting,” and it’s not fair to those who work hard to create amazing videos. We want creators to get credit for the videos that they own. To address this, we have been exploring ways to enhance our rights management tools to better empower creators to control how their videos are shared on Facebook.

We have an established foundation in place today. Videos uploaded to Facebook are run through the Audible Magic system, which uses audio fingerprinting technology to help identify and prevent unauthorized videos from making their way onto the platform. We have reporting tools that enable content owners to tell us when someone has uploaded their video without permission, and we promptly remove those videos in response to valid reports. And our IP policies ensure that people that repeatedly post content without permission are held responsible for their actions.

But, as video grows on Facebook, we’ve heard from some video publishers that there are ways in which we can be doing a better job. We’ve listened to this feedback, and we’re taking steps in response. We’re working with Audible Magic to enhance the way that system works with Facebook, including improving the intake of content intended to be blocked from our platform. And we’re making improvements to our existing procedures so that infringing content can be reported and removed more efficiently, and to keep repeat infringers off our service.

These existing measures work well for many creators, but some publishers with particular needs, including creators whose videos have gone viral, have been asking for more tools. To this end, we have been building new video matching technology that will be available to a subset of creators. This technology is tailored to our platform, and will allow these creators to identify matches of their videos on Facebook across Pages, profiles, groups, and geographies. Our matching tool will evaluate millions of video uploads quickly and accurately, and when matches are surfaced, publishers will be able to report them to us for removal.

We will soon begin testing the beta version of this matching technology with a small group of partners, including media companies, multi-channel networks and individual video creators. Feedback from our partners is critical, and we’re eager to iterate and improve the system over the coming months. We also plan to make this technology available to more partners in the future, as well as to continue to build upon our already-existing tools.

This is just the beginning. In the long-term, our goal is to provide a comprehensive video management system that fits the needs of our partners. This will take time, but we’re working on it, and we’re committed.

220,000 iCloud Accounts Hacked by Apple iOS Jailbreak Tweaks Backdoors

Tweaks that you installed on their jailbroken devices are looking to steal your iCloud login credentials, a report said.

The iCloud account details, including email addresses and passwords, of nearly 220,000 jailbreak users have been breached, an online Chinese vulnerability-reporting platform WooYun reported.

WooYun is an information security platform where researchers report vulnerabilities and vendors give their feedbacks.

Backdoor Privacy Attack
The security breach, according to the website, was a result of 'backdoor privacy attack' caused by the installation of a malicious jailbreak tweak.

It appears that Hackers are using a variety of "built-in backdoors" that could be numerous of malicious jailbreak tweaks in an effort to acquire victim's iCloud account information.
Once installed, these malicious tweaks transferred the iCloud login details of the jailbreak users to an unknown remote server.

So far, it is unclear that who is behind the attack, and what are their intentions to do with the stolen iCloud accounts. But, the report states that WooYun has notified the appropriate vendors – apparently Apple – about the issue and are awaiting processing.
Below you can see the (slightly) translated version of the report:

The security flaw has nothing to do with Apple's security and affects only iOS users who have attempted jailbreak on their devices. However, with such a large number of compromised Cloud accounts.

Considering just one jailbreak tweak, 220,000 seems to be a huge number. Though it is believed that a number of malicious jailbreak tweaks have been used by the criminals, out of which many are posted as free versions of popular paid tweaks.

How to Protect Yourself?

It's unlikely to say not to jailbreak your device, as we can take some necessary steps to tighten up our device security.

Here are some steps that you should implement to help protect yourself:

  • Enable 2 Factor Authentication for your iCloud Account
  • Do not add shady third-party repositories to Cydia
  • Do not install jailbreak tweaks from unknown and untrusted sources
  • Do not pirate tweaks or apps

Lenovo caught installing bloatware again with Windows BIOS backdoor

Lenovo has backtracked over the use a little known Windows BIOS trick that installs persistent software on the firm's systems without the consent of the user, even if they wiped their entire operating system to try and remove it.
The company has released patches to remove the software from a raft of its devices as the feature left systems open to attack and was "not consistent" with new guidelines put forward by Microsoft.

The tool in question was called Lenovo Search Engine (LSE) and it downloaded a program called One Key Optimiser used for "enhancing PC performance by updating firmware, drivers and pre-installed apps".

It took advantage of a feature in Windows called Windows Platform Binary Table (WPBT) that is intended to ensure "critical software" crucial to running Windows remains in place, even after the operating system has been wiped.

However, Lenovo was using this to ensure its own software would also install on the device, even if the user tried to remove it.

The BIOS of the computer was set to check the System32 boot up file on specific Lenovo systems. If only Microsoft files are present, the system overrides them to include specific manufacturer software.

Two files, LenovoUpdate.exe and LenovoCheck.exe, were then set up to download automatically as soon as the device is connected to the internet.

However, the set-up sends system data automatically to Lenovo by default and found to be vulnerable to attack by hackers. Lenovo said it was first warned of the issue by security researcher Roel Schouwenberg around April-May and it verified the flaws with Microsoft.

"Lenovo and Microsoft have discovered possible ways this program could be exploited in the Lenovo Notebook implementation by an attacker, including a buffer overflow attack and an attempted connection to a Lenovo test server," it added.

As a result Lenovo has now issued two security advisories to remove the software.  The update for its affected desktop machines is listed as ‘low' severity but the Lenovo notebook security fixes is marked as ‘high' severity owing to a further vulnerability that could be used by an attacker to escalate system privileges.

Affected machines include the Yoga 3, Flex 2, Pro 15 and V3000 notebooks and the H, C and Horizon desktop ranges. However, its ThinkPad range is not affected.

Lenovo's urged users to install the updates as quickly as possible.
"[LSE] is no longer being installed on Lenovo systems. It is strongly recommended that customers update their systems with the new BIOS firmware which disables and/or removes this feature," the firm said.

Lenovo came under fire earlier this year for releasing hardware with a form of adware pre-installed called Superfish.

Lenovo has moved to calm concerns that it compromised laptop customers' privacy using the notorious Superfish adware.
The claims erupted on the Lenovo forum where a multitude of customers reported finding Superfish installed on their machines.
Superfish is adware that collects data such as web traffic information using fake, self-signed root certificates and then uses it to push advertisements to the user.

Lenovo's chief technology officer promised in February that the company would stop production of any adware-infected products.

Lenovo CTO Peter Hortensius has now promised that Lenovo will never ship Superfish again preloaded, and that it is working with partners and experts to reduce the inclusion of other 'bloatware' in its laptops.
"We stopped the preloads and will not include this Superfish software in any devices in the future," he wrote.
"We are in the midst of developing a concrete plan to address software vulnerabilities and security with defined actions that we will share by the end of the week."

He said this will include "creating a cleaner PC image" and working with customers and privacy/security experts to "create the right preload strategy".

The comments come a day after Lenovo confirmed that it had teamed up with Microsoft and McAfee to remove the Superfish adware following concerns about security.

How to Change Country Location in Google Play

If you bought a Phone in other country noticed would like to change your play store location to US (as I'm from Ph, just don't currently live there example only), there are a few apps I would like but are "currently unavailable in your location". Example Cortana

NOTE: VPN can not change your Google Apps Location

You'll have to go to Settings-->More-->App manager-->Google Play Store

1. Go into google wallet and Playstore payment and remove the credit card details that you used in your previous country. Now key in the new credit card details of your new country. Then do a dummy purchase from google playstore - proceed to buy, and at the last stage cancel the purchase.

NOTE: google lets you refund and uninstall that app immediately.

You can do this also on PC .

2. Hold the google playstore icon for a few seconds, until the screen shows the "property" icon for google playstore. Open propeties for google playstore, and uninstall the updates (that you may have installed in the previous country). You will be asked whether you would like google playstore to be reverted to factory settings. Say yes.

3. Reboot the phone. Then click the playstore icon, and agree to the terms and conditions, and enter the store. Now you will notice that the prices are indicated in the local currency.

Option 2

Logged into Google wallet with gmail id.
  1. - Remove old credit cards from old country and added your new credit card from US with my US address.
  2. - Changed default shipping address to US and removed my old address (deleted it)
  3. - Cleared data/cache of your Play Store and restarted your device.
  4. - After that logged in again but still I found the same old play store.
  5. - Contacted tech support and told you that the steps you did are enough and I just have to wait for 24 hours. (optional)
  6. - Next day opened the Play store (with out any cache clearing etc.) and found all apps showing prices in US dollar.

Note: There is no need at all to purchase an app (as I have noticed several people suggesting the same). In my case I did add my credit card but I did not purchase any app.

Understanding Windows 10 Memory Compression Feature

With the announcement of the Memory compression feature, Microsoft have received a lot of queries from the insiders asking for more information. This post tries to go in-depth into the inner working of the Memory Manager and the memory compression engine built within it.

One of the primary goals of any operating system is to manage and share resources efficiently. How well an operating system arbitrates competing memory requirements is particularly important, because it impacts the user’s perception of system responsiveness.

In Windows 10 (build 10525) , we enabled the Memory Manager (MM) to compress infrequently-accessed memory pages which reduces the amount of reads and writes to the disk (pagefile) and therefore improves responsiveness. By compressing memory we reduce the amount of memory used per process, allowing the operating system to maintain more applications in physical memory at a time before enacting traditional paging.

When Memory Manager’s policy does dictate paging, the data being written to or read from the disk is already compressed to typically around 40 percent of its original size. This compression improves the performance of other unrelated operations on the system by reducing a major source of interfering IO load. The end result is a snappier, more responsive experience with improved app launch performance and consistency.

Before explaining the Windows 10 changes in detail, I’ll describe some of the fundamental concepts in Windows memory management and give an overview of how it was performed prior to implementing compression.

The first concept is a working set which is the actively-used physical memory of a process. A private working set represents physical memory that is unique to a process. Processes also touch other pages of physical memory that are “shared,” which several processes can reference. When you look at the Processes view in Task Manager, the memory for a specific process is actually its current private working set. Note that for simplicity when I refer to a “working set” in this post, I mean a “private working set.”

Some subset of a process’s working set pages are likely to be used only infrequently, and since memory is a limited resource that needs to be used efficiently, those pages must be reclaimed and made available for use by other processes. When MM decides a page has been inactive for long enough, it puts it on the modified list. An asynchronous process writes pages in the modified list to the pagefile on disk and then - in memory - moves them from the modified list to the standby list. This write happens so that if the memory is reclaimed from the standby list by another process, but the original process comes looking for its page, the data can be retrieved from the pagefile.

However, pages on the standby list haven’t yet been reclaimed, so they retain their data until MM repurposes them for another process’s working set. They can be reused by the app that previously owned them if that app asks for the page before it is reclaimed. This is called a soft fault. But if a page has been repurposed, and the original process asks MM for that page, a hard fault occurs. The original process is now asking for memory that has been taken by another process, and the OS must issue disk read IO to retrieve it.

As explained earlier, MM, when faced with memory pressure, determines which pages should be moved to the modified list. This is called trimming. But Windows 8 added the ability for Universal Windows Platform (UWP) applications to be swapped out in their entirety - i.e. at app rather than at page granularity. This is done because UWP apps are suspended when not in the foreground meaning they won’t be running until the user switches back them. No page will be touched until the app is brought back in its entirety, so it’s safe to swap out the whole application. The disk IO required to swap the application back in is then entirely sequential reads, which are dramatically faster than random reads. For more information about the swapping of UWP apps in Windows 8 MM, see this blog post by Bill Karagounis.

Windows 10 introduces a layer between the pagefile and normal paging activity which allows for the compression of all pages moved to the modified list. This means that when MM feels memory pressure, it will compress unused pages instead of writing them to disk. MM now only performs disk IO when compression isn’t enough to relieve memory pressure. Using this strategy, fewer disk operations are required since - thanks to compression - more data can be stored in memory than before.

This is achieved by using a concept called a compression store, which is an in-memory collection of compressed pages. There’s a single system store for legacy Windows desktop apps or any other non-UWP app memory usage, and then one store for each Windows Runtime app (in order to enable trimming and swapping accordingly). Instead of writing pages in the modified list to the pagefile, MM compresses them and places them in the appropriate store.

The stores live in the system process’s working set. Note that in the diagram above we’ve displayed the System Working Set separately from the other Working Sets for formatting reasons, but the System Working Set is a working set like any other. Though perhaps counterintuitive at first glance, since the system process holds the stores in memory, its working set grows larger exactly when memory is being made available to other processes. This is visible in the task manager.

First, observe the amount of memory used by the System process:

Then, start and suspend some applications:

And the System process’s working set will grow:

Each store manages fragmentation by compacting itself when necessary to ensure a good compression ratio. In practice, compressed memory takes up about 40% of the uncompressed size, and as a result on a typical device running a typical workload, Windows 10 writes pages out to disk only 50% as often as previous versions of the OS did. This will reduce the amount of time spent waiting for IO on all devices, but it will also improve the expected lifespan of systems featuring flash-based hard drives.

Though compression affords the OS more space in memory for a given application load, paging to disk may still be necessary. In Windows 10, this works by moving pages from the stores in the system process to the modified list. If pages come to the modified list from the system process stores, MM knows they’ve already been compressed and are ready to be written to the pagefile. The writes to disk will be smaller since the pages are necessarily compressed, i.e. the only pages MM will write to disk are ones which have been compressed and stashed in a store in the system process.

So now let’s talk about how a process gets its data back either from a compression store or from the pagefile on disk. In the former case where a process faults on a page which is currently in a compressed store, MM simply decompresses the page and puts it back in the requesting process’s working set - a soft compression fault. But in the latter case, MM tries the former and finds that the compressed data for the page is not in memory. The system process working set then hard faults on the compressed data for the

page and MM reads it back in from disk. Decompression and adding to the faulting process’s working set follow.

Decompression is a highly parallelizable operation, so Windows can be efficient when moving multiple pages at once. Because of that, swapping UWP applications (as opposed to trimming) performs particularly well. But it’s not just the decompression: Windows combines that parallelizability with the sequential reads designed into the swapping procedure to read pages into memory extremely quickly; it reads a block at a time, and, while waiting for the next IO operation to complete, it’s simultaneously decompressing the data it just read in parallel using multiple CPUs. Where before a platform might have felt sluggish due to the transfer rate of its disk, running Windows 10 the same hardware appears much more responsive.

In summary, Memory compression allows Windows 10 to make better use of available memory on all systems by reducing physical memory utilization, resulting in fewer pagefile IO operations and a reduced reliance on disk. Furthermore, it improves the speed of writing to and reading from disk when MM determines paging must be enacted. In sum, we expect users to experience improved overall responsiveness and usability on all devices running Windows 10.

Hack Codegen is a library for generating Hack code and writing it into signed files that prevent undesired modifications. Being able to generate code through automated code generation allows programmers to increase the level of abstraction by making frameworks that are declarative and that are translated into high-quality Hack code. We've been using Hack Codegen at Facebook for a while. After seeing so much internal success, we open-sourced this library so that more people could take advantage of it.

Open-sourcing Hack Codegen, which automatically generates hack code, Facebook's software engineer Alejandro Marcu said in a blog post

Before Hack Codegen, Facebook engineers used concatenating strings to generate code that perform simple yet frequently executed tasks, like fetching birthday of a user.

However, the social media giant later discovered that the technique was not good enough to scale up and realized that it need a good library to generate code. This results in the birth of Hack Codegen.
Code That Writes Code

Hack Codegen simplifies code generation by helping developers create a schema, which holds code for multiple times usage, and a way to generate all the related functionality required to support that code.
The library only needs a developer to provide the required details about the particular implementation, although rest of the task is done by the software, such as generation of classes, variables, methods, functions, interfaces, files, and other standard blocks of code.

The Hack Codegen library includes:
  • Hack_builder to deal with the concatenation
  • New lines
  • Indentation
  • Braces
  • Hack keywords
  • Collections
  • Signed files to re-generate code automatically when a schema is changed

The open-source version of Hack Codegen is available on GitHub.
