Tesla unveils residential ‘solar roof’ with new battery storage system

Tesla will build and sell its own line of solar panels with integrated batteries.he Powerwall 2 will allow residential homeowners to replace their entire roof with solar panels and an updated Powerwall 2 battery system, making it much simpler for homes to be entirely powered by solar power.
The roof is made of a textured glass tile with integrated solar cells. The roofs look "as good or better" than conventional roofs, according to Musk.

They look like normal roofing tiles from the ground, but are completely transparent to the sun. The tiles are hydrographically printed, which, Musk says, makes each one a "special snowflake tile," and no two roofs will be the same.

"You can take any two roofs that look like that and they will be different — because they are different," said Musk.

There are a number of different versions of solar panels: Textured Glass Tile, Slate Glass Tile, Tuscan Glass Tile, and Smooth Glass Tile. Tesla says its glass tiles are much more durable than conventional roof tile — something that’s important in areas with risk of hail.

The Powerwall 2 can store 14 kWh of energy, with a 5 kW continuous power draw, and 7 kW peak. The battery is warranted for unlimited power cycles for up to 10 years. It can be floor or wall mounted, inside or outside. It can be used for load shifting or back-up power.

Musk says there are three parts to the solar energy solution: generation (solar panels), storage (batteries), and transportation (electric cars). Musk’s plan is to sell all three of those products through Tesla.

Those wishing to go entirely solar, with minimal draw off the electrical grid, would need to buy solar panels from a separate company (like SolarCity) as well as Powerwall batteries from Tesla. Now, customers will be able to buy both products from Tesla directly.

Availability and pricing of the solar roof — not to mention how the thing is actually installed and works — was not announced. The Powerwall is $5,500.

Tesla doubles the energy density for battery

While Tesla's solar roof / Powerwall event isn't until tomorrow, the product that preceded both, its commercial... cousin, Powerpack, has been upgraded and is already shipping to companies. The company says Powerpack 2 has double the energy density than the original model, paired with a new inverter (made at its Gigafactory), that's apparently the lowest-priced, highest efficiency utility-scale inverter available. Arguably just as important, the new inverter also simplifies the installation process, with several once-separate components now baked into it.

Tesla's blog calls the new system a "a cost-competitive alternative to other traditional utility infrastructure solutions". It adds that nearly 300 MWh of Tesla batteries have been deployed so far

Laptop Hybrid Microsoft's Surface Book i7 offers twice the graphics power

Were you worried that Microsoft would leave the Surface Book untouched during its Windows 10 event? You can set your mind at ease. Microsoft has unveiled the Surface Book i7, a refresh that focuses on pure power. The name is a giveaway as to the processor (surprise, there's a Core i7), but you also get twice the graphics performance -- the company added a second fan and otherwise redesigned the thermals to allow for faster GeForce GTX 965M video without cooking the inside. There's also a larger battery that promises up to 16 hours of battery life in laptop mode (no word on the tablet mode yet).

The catch: Aside from the absence of major external revisions (not that this is necessarily a bad thing), this will be one pricey piece of hardware. The Surface Book i7 will cost $2,399 when it ships on November 10th. Just another reminder that this is a flagship machine for people who want Microsoft's definitive take on mobile computing, and are willing to pay whatever it takes to get it.

People like Giphy's GIF service and now has over 100 million users every day

It won't shock you to hear that GIF hosts like Giphy and Gfycat are thriving in an era where there's a new meme every minute. But just how well are they doing? Supremely well, according to Giphy. It just posted its first "State of the GIF" report, revealing that it has over 100 million active daily users. Yes, that's daily and not monthly. That amounts to over 1 billion GIFs served per day, and more than 2 million hours of viewing time. So what's the trick to getting that many viewers?

The company attributes at least some of its success to being proactive. It's not just waiting for you to upload a funny GIF yourself -- it has "thousands" of partners (including big names like Saturday Night Live and South Park Studios) that contribute their own animations. Event partners like MTV (for the VMAs) and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert have racked up hundreds of millions of views by themselves, and there's even a studio dedicated to producing original GIFs. Wide availability on phones helps, too.

Comcast sues Nashville over law that helps Google Fiber

Comcast has filed a lawsuit against Nashville in a bid to overturn a city law, One Touch Make Ready, that was primarily designed to help speed Google's fiber optic rollout. Much as with an AT&T lawsuit filed in September, Comcast maintains that AT&T-owned poles fall under the jurisdiction of the FCC, not the city -- Nashville can't let internet providers add their own wires without having AT&T move wires first, the cable giant says. The suit also claims that the city's Metro Council isn't allowed to regulate poles owned by Nashville Electric Service, and that the law violates Comcast's contracts with both pole owners.

Comcast insists that this isn't about protecting its market dominance. It's about the cableco's ability to oversee its network, "customer relationships and public safety," according to the company's Andy Macke. Google and other internet providers could theoretically cause damage or otherwise interfere with existing service. In the lawsuit, Comcast adds that One Touch Make Ready is "so intrusive" that Metro Nashville exempted its own poles from the new rule.

Google Pixel and Pixel XL cameras are experiencing extreme lens flaring

The new Google Pixel and Pixel XL have plenty of features that can stand up to the competition, but there's one that Google apparently didn't intend on including: excessive lens flare on that highly rated camera. Redditors and members of google's own Pixel User Community have been reporting cases of "rather extreme lens flaring" in "the overwhelming majority" of handsets.

Lens flare can be caused by a variety of factors and can even be a cool and desirable artistic effect. But as Googler IsaacOnCamera notes on the Pixel forums, this "halo/arc flare" happens as a bright arc in the corners of the frame and is definitely unintended. The good news is: Google says there's nothing wrong with the Pixel hardware and there's no reason to replace your device if you find your bright, sunlit shots are suddenly dappled with unwanted halos. The company says a software update to the HDR+ mode will correct the problem in the next couple of weeks.

YouTube today officially launched a new feature for video creators called End Screens

YouTube today officially launched a new feature for video creators called End Screens, which are designed to keep users engaged with the YouTube app and creators’ content. The feature, which places thumbnails at the end of the video, can be used to prompt viewers to watch more of the creator’s videos when they finish watching the first one, or take other actions, like subscribing to the channels, visiting channels from fellow collaborators, and more.

The feature was already in testing with select creators ahead of this announcement, which now makes End Screens a feature any video publisher can use.

It’s also meant to serve as something of an upgrade to the older, desktop-only tool called Annotations. With Annotations, creators could make their own end screens of sorts, by manually adding clickable links to videos.

YouTube also last year introduced another means of moving away from Annotations, with the debut of “Cards.” These work a lot like End Screens, but can be displayed during the video playback.

However, for those who choose to migrate to End Screens, there will no longer be a need to use Annotations, YouTube explains in a blog post detailing the new feature. That’s because the End Screens are quicker to use and will reach users on both desktop and mobile.

According to YouTube’s documentation, End Screens can be incorporated anywhere within the last 5 to 20 seconds of a video, and can include up to four elements. In addition to promoting a creator’s own videos and encouraging users to subscribe, the feature can also point viewers to other videos, playlists, or channels on YouTube, or can be used to promote non-YouTube content, like websites, merchandise for sale, or crowdfunding campaigns.

Tim Cook ‘not sure’ if Apple meet iPhone 7 Plus demand by the end of the year

Apple is working to match the demand for the iPhone 7 Plus as best as it can, but it might not meet all the demand by the end of the year, CEO Tim Cook said on the investor call discussing its fourth-quarter earnings.

“It’s hard to say,” Cook said in response to an investor question about whether the iPhone would hit supply/demand equilibrium by the end of the next quarter. “I believe that on iPhone 7 we will, on iPhone 7 Plus I’m not sure. I wouldn’t say yes at this point because the underlying demand looks extremely strong on both products but particularly on the iPhone 7 Plus vs our forecast going into the product launch.”

This is going to be a very big deal for Apple, which is looking for its first return to sales growth in the first quarter this year. The holiday quarter is critical for Apple, and in addition to that it has a huge window of opportunity given that the Galaxy Note 7 is basically dead in the water.

“It’s very hard to gauge demand when you’re selling everything you’re making, so we’ll find out more through the quarter but we’re confident enough to give you guys guidance that we’re returning to growth this quarter, which obviously feels very good for us,” Cook said.

Apple’s iPhone sales have not only been slowing, but declining, year-over-year in several quarters this year. That’s largely been attributed to an overall saturation of the smartphone ecosystem, especially since Apple largely targets a higher-end part of the market. Apple is also seeing a lot of competition from other manufacturers trying to beat it at a lower price point.

Apple leaks new MacBook Pro with Touch ID

Apple is widely expected to unveil a redesigned MacBook Pro at an event on Thursday, but it looks like it may have let a couple images slip out early. MacRumors spotted a pair of images hidden inside yesterday's update to macOS Sierra, both of which show a new MacBook Pro, a touch panel above its keyboard, and a fingerprint reader.

But the highlight of these images is of course the touch strip at the top of the keyboard, which has been rumored for months. The images give an early idea of what it'll be like in use: completely blank and black when the computer is off, and able to display colors, buttons, and symbols in response to whatever comes up on-screen.

One of the pictures shows it being used for Apple Pay. An arrow points to the right corner of the touch strip, where a Touch ID fingerprint reader is located. 9to5Mac also found icons inside macOS that seem to refer to the ability to unlock or authenticate something with Touch ID.

Google "pause" the planned expansion of its Fiber high-speed internet service

Google announced on Tuesday that it plans to "pause" the planned expansion of its Fiber high-speed internet service in the 10 cities. This decision will not affect customers in the eight metro areas where Fiber is already installed, only those where the company was considering expanding into.

It had been looking into and will eliminate a number of positions in those cities -- 9 percent of the division's total number of employees, according to Ars Technica.

Nor will it impact places where the company has already confirmed Fiber's rollout -- including San Francisco, Irvine, Huntsville and San Antonio. Cities like Chicago, Dallas, Portland, Tampa and San Diego, however, will not be so lucky.

The company cites a need to "stay ahead of the curve " in providing gigabit internet service as the reason for its pivot. Fiber has reportedly failed to hit its subscriber goals while Google recently purchased high-speed wireless ISP, Webpass. A reported was coming in August -- their sources claimed that CEO Larry Page had ordered the 1,000 person division to cut its worker count by half.

Chinese Firm Admits Its Hacked DVRs and Cameras Were Behind Largest DDoS Attack

More such attacks are expected to happen and will not stop until IoT manufacturers take the security of these Internet-connected devices seriously.

One such IoT electronic manufacturer is Chinese firm Hangzhou Xiongmai Technology which admitted its products – DVRs and internet-connected cameras – inadvertently played a role in the Friday's massive cyber attack against DynDNS.

The Mirai malware can easily be removed from infected devices by rebooting them, but the devices will end up infecting again in a matter of minutes if their owners and manufacturers do not take proper measures to protect them.

Some of these devices, which include connected devices from Xiongmai, can not be protected because of hardcoded passwords, and the fact that their makers implemented them in a way that they cannot easily be updated.

The company claimed to have rolled out patches for security vulnerabilities, involving weak default passwords, which allowed the Mirai malware to infect its products and use them to launch massive DDoS attack against DynDNS.

However, Xiongmai products that are running older versions of the firmware are still vulnerable. To tackle this issue, the company has advised its customers to update their product's firmware and change their default credentials.

The electronics components firm would also recall some of its earlier products, specifically webcam models, sold in the US and send customers a patch for products made before April last year, Xiongmai said in a statement on its official microblog.

How to disable them Chrome tabs with ‘article suggestions'

All you need to do is change two hidden settings. Copy each of the links below (you can trust me) and paste them into new tabs. Each will bring up a complicated-looking settings page, with one item highlighted at the top. Tap the little drop-down menu, which probably reads “default,” and select “disabled.”

chrome://flags/#enable-ntp-popular-sites
chrome://flags/#enable-ntp-snippets

Don’t disable other stuff unless you know what you’re doing — some of these are important. It’ll prompt you to restart Chrome after you make these changes — do so and you should be back to the old new tab page.

Movidius Artificial Intelligence to Intelligent Cameras

San Mateo-based Movidius  announced today that the Movidius Myriad 2 Video Processing Unit (VPU) will soon power a new generation of Hikvision smart surveillance cameras capable of recognizing everything from suspicious packages to distracted drivers.

Movidius - the world leader in embedded machine vision technology together with leading provider of video-based IoT (Internet of Things) solutions and data operation services Hikvision have announced that Movidius’ Myriad 2 Vision Processing Unit (VPU) technology will be powering a new lineup of smart cameras. Among other things, Myriad 2 will be utilized for running cutting-edge Deep Neural Networks in order to perform much higher accuracy video analytics locally.

Deep Neural Networks are rapidly replacing traditional computer vision approaches to video analytics, allowing security systems to automatically detect anomalies such as suspicious packages, drivers distracted by mobile devices, and intruders trying to access secure locations. Running Deep Neural Networks has historically required devices to depend on additional compute in the cloud, but thanks to the ultra-low power Myriad 2 Vision Processing Unit (VPU), these advanced algorithms can now be run at the edge, inside cameras themselves.

Thanks to Deep Neural Networks and stereo 3D sensing, Hikvision has been able to achieve up to 99% accuracy in their advanced visual analytics applications. Some of these applications include: car model classification, intruder detection, suspicious baggage alert, and seatbelt detection. The Myriad 2 platform allows these functions to now be processed instantaneously onboard the camera, rather than being sent to the cloud for processing.

Facebook's Messenger app for Windows 10 upgraded now does voice and video calls

Facebook has  started rolling out last week the Windows 10 version of its standalone Messenger app with voice and video calling.

A Facebook spokesperson told the publication that it only started rolling out last week. When the feature does go live for you, you'll get call notifications if someone rings you up and be able to leave voicemails in your friends' inboxes. VentureBeat says you'll also be able to choose which camera to use, record your video calls and do group voice -- not video, unfortunately -- calls if the whole squad wants to chat.

Facebook has also updated WhatsApp for Windows Phone with video calling capability, a Spanish website has reported. However, it's an experimental release exclusively for select beta users, so you'll have to be really lucky to be able to test it out before everyone else.

Airbus has a secret flying taxi project called Vahana

The French aerospace giant Airbus recently unveiled its secret flying-car project dubbed Vahana — a single-manned, autonomously piloted aircraft that can take off and land vertically. Look like drones on steroids.

The project launched in early 2016 as one of the first pursuits of A³ (pronounced A-cubed), the Silicon Valley arm of Airbus, according to the startup’s CEO Rodin Lyasoff. Vahana is a Sanskrit word that refers to the vehicle or mount of a god, but Lyasoff says his feet are firmly rooted in reality when it comes to the project.

The concept drawing of Vahana should look familiar to anyone who follows the tiny-but-passionate flying car movement. The aircraft has eight rotors on two sets of wings, both of which tilt depending on whether the car’s flying vertically or horizontally. There’s room for a single passenger under a canopy that retracts like a visor. The aircraft will be deployed like a taxi, making it the air-taxi version of Uber, according to CNN Money.

Airbus, which competes with the US-based Boeing, is best known for large jetliners like the double-decker A380. However, the flying car project shows that the French company is not above dabbling in some high-concept, and perhaps unrealistic, aviation ideas.

Lyasoff says his team of engineers, designers, and robotics experts are aiming to fly a full-size prototype before the end of 2017, and to have a “productizable demonstrator” by 2020.

Cisco has created a new technology, can cut live pirate video streams

Just ask anyone who has watched a bootleg stream for a pay-per-view boxing match or the Super Bowl -- new streams usually pop up faster than the copyright holders can take them down. The party might soon be over, however. Cisco has created a new technology, Streaming Piracy Prevention, that promises to automatically cut off illegal live feeds.

According to piracy monitoring specialist Friend MTS, in the last month alone its online threat analysis has uncovered over 12,000 unique instances of HD channels (1280 x 720 frame size or higher) on pirate services, being sourced from Pay TV service providers around the world. Expand this to SD resolution, often targeted at mobile devices, and the number increases to over 22,000 channels. With almost no operator is exempt, content is being source from the smallest to the largest Pay TV providers in the market.

The approach uses a forensic watermark to identify the sessions and subscriptions being used to leak the video (say, an HBO or UFC account), and shuts down those sources in real time. Companies wouldn't have to send legal warnings and hope that offending streams go down before the event is over. They could take action as soon as they get wind of a feed, without any go-betweens slowing things down.

While clever, Cisco's technique might raise concerns even if you have no qualms paying to watch big sporting events. Just because a company can circumvent the usual notice-and-takedown routine doesn't mean that it should. What happens if there's an error, or local laws require notices? While the likelihood of a mistake isn't high, it's possible that copyright holders could create trouble while clamping down on unofficial streams.

Pirate services obtain content by capturing and restreaming feeds obtained from official sources, often from something as humble as a regular subscriber account. These streams can then be redistributed by thousands of other sites and services, many of which are easily found using a simple search.

Dedicated anti-piracy companies track down these streams and send takedown notices to the hosts carrying them. Sometimes this means that streams go down quickly but in other cases hosts can take a while to respond or may not comply at all. Networking company Cisco thinks it has found a solution to these problems.

The company’s claims center around its Streaming Piracy Prevention (SPP) platform, a system that aims to take down illicit streams in real-time. Perhaps most interestingly, Cisco says SPP functions without needing to send takedown notices to companies hosting illicit streams.

“Traditional takedown mechanisms such as sending legal notices (commonly referred to as ‘DMCA notices’) are ineffective where pirate services have put in place infrastructure capable of delivering video at tens and even hundreds of gigabits per second, as in essence there is nobody to send a notice to,” the company explains.

“Escalation to infrastructure providers works to an extent, but the process is often slow as the pirate services will likely provide the largest revenue source for many of the platform providers in question.”

To overcome these problems Cisco says it has partnered with Friend MTS (FMTS), a UK-based company specializing in content-protection.
