DDoS attacks growing in scale, span, and reach – IPC

DDoS attacks growing in scale, span, and reach – IPC

DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks continue to increase dramatically, threatening websites and businesses globally, according to a study cited by IPC, the country’s pioneer DDoS Mitigation service provider.

The study conducted by IPC’s DDoS Mitigation partner Imperva Incapsula, entitled Global DDoS Threat Landscape Q4 2015, used data from 3,997 network layer and 5,443 application layer DDoS attacks mitigated by Incapsula from October 1 to November 29, 2015.

A DDoS attack is a costly form of cyber crime where a large volume of malicious traffic is flooded into a website, causing it to crash. This is a planned and coordinated attack to disrupt the normal function of a website.

According to the study, the United States, United Kingdom, and Japan are the top 3 targeted countries. Furthermore, UK-based and Japan-based sites saw a 20.7 percent and 7.4 increase in attacks, respectively.

“DDoS is a serious online crime that cannot be ignored. It warrants a definitive course of action from highly-skilled professionals trained in this type of cyber war,” stated IPC President Rene Huergas. He added that the Incapsula report is a clear indication of how DDoS poses a formidable threat to businesses in any industry worldwide, including the Philippines.

In the study, it was revealed that there were changes in the DDoS attack patterns during the last quarter of 2015 and a surge in the use of DDoS-for-hire services. A 25.3 percent increase from the previous quarter in terms of frequency of network layer attacks was also recorded.

The longest application layer attack—to date—lasted for over 101 days. The target was a U.S.-hosted website registered to a small catering business. Moreover, a 325Gbps network layer attack, one of the largest to ever be documented, occurred in mid-December 2015.

“Business leaders and entrepreneurs must be vigilant against these attacks, which can cause damage to their companies’ coffers. As what the report stated, the perpetrators are finding new ways to infiltrate websites and crash these on purpose,” Huergas pointed out.

Cyber crimes on a larger scale can take its toll on a country where there is a growing need for companies to go online to reach a bigger target market. A recent example is when the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) website was defaced by hackers claiming to be from Anonymous Philippines. As the group turned the NTC page black, they posted their grievances over the state of Philippine Internet. The attack went viral immediately, not only bringing to the public’s attention the group’s cause but exposing the vulnerability of the website of a government agency.

Aside from the government, most businesses in the retail and financial industries in the Philippines have online presence. E-commerce, for one, continues to thrive, attracting customers who spend a lot of time online. Some of these e-commerce sites have advertised aggressively, spending millions for production and tri-media (TV, print, and radio) placements, proof that e-commerce is an emerging industry.

Aside from this, most decision makers recognize the importance of going digital to grow their business. Indeed, there is a need for effective online safeguards and security measures to prevent DDoS attacks.

The solution to counter these attacks is a sound DDoS mitigation strategy. IPC is the first and only DDoS Mitigation provider in the Philippines to feature in-country data scrubbing for local enterprises and institutions. The facility uses state-of-the-art equipment, manned by mitigation specialists so customers are assured of protection from looming attacks.

“The latest Incapsula study is very useful in disseminating information on the dangers of DDoS attacks. We at IPC have consistently been creating awareness about the existence of this cyber crime in the interest of the public and specifically, the business community,” said Huergas.

IPC is the exclusive partner of Imperva Incapsula in the Philippines since November 2015. Imperva Incapsula is a leading data and security solutions company that protects business entities in the cloud and on-premises. It was ranked number one by Top Ten Reviews in DDoS Protection Services.

Facebook's Vice President Arrested in Brazil Today for Refusing to Share WhatsApp Data

Brazil’s federal police arrested Facebook Latin America Vice President Diego Jorge Dzodan for failing to comply with court orders to help investigators in a drug trafficking case that involves WhatsApp, a popular messaging app owned by Facebook that has over 100 Million users in Brazil.
Dzodan is still in police custody and is responding to police questioning in Sao Paulo, Local media reported.

According to a statement released by a spokesperson from WhatsApp:

"We are disappointed that law enforcement took this extreme step. WhatsApp cannot provide information we do not have. We cooperated to the full extent of our ability in this case, and while we respect the important job of law enforcement, we strongly disagree with its decision."

In December 2015, the Brazilian court blocked WhatsApp messaging service temporarily for 24 hours in Brazil, after the company refused to hand over the content of communications between alleged drug dealers involved in the drug trafficking case.
...and the refusal now resulted in the arrest of Facebook VP.

At the time of WhatsApp blackout in Brazil, Facebook’s Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg said that he was stunned by the "extreme decision by a single judge to punish every person in Brazil who uses WhatsApp."

Today’s arrest of Facebook VP comes as a New York judge ruled that the United States government have no right to force Apple to unlock an iPhone involved in a drug case.
Apple is also fighting a legal battle against a court order that demands the company to help the FBI unlock an iPhone 5C belonging to the one of the shooters involved in the San Bernardino massacre.

Windows 10 Started Monetize The Lock Screen

You may have noticed an advertisement appearing on your desktop or laptop’s lock screen over the past couple of days. Yes, this is what Microsoft has chosen to generate revenue after offering Free Upgrade.
Windows 10's new Spotlight feature that usually shows you clean and beautiful photographs and fun facts on your lock screen, but now started displaying advertisements to over 200 Million devices running Windows 10.

Windows 10 Download to its users: Monetize the Lock Screen.

You may have noticed an advertisement appearing on your desktop or laptop’s lock screen over the past couple of days.

Some Windows 10 users have reported seeing ads for Rise of the Tomb Raider with links to Windows Store from where users can purchase the video game. Microsoft started selling the game last month.

The ads are not as annoying as the Windows 10 privacy concerns related to the way Microsoft collects your personal data, the good news is that you can turn the ads OFF.

The advertisements are because of the Windows Spotlight feature in your Personalization settings.
If you don't want to see these intrusive ads, follow the steps given below to disable Windows Spotlight:

  1. Open the Start Menu and look for 'Lock Screen Settings.'
  2. Under 'Background,' Choose either 'Picture' or 'Slideshow,' instead of Windows Spotlight.
  3. Now, Scroll down to 'Get fun facts, tips, tricks, and more on your lock screen' and uncheck this box.

If you are Th2 user your Lock Screen Menu  is like this.

The advertisements are turned ON for your lock screen by default, which is definitely a clever way to offer companies to reach their customers, without mentioning the word 'advertisements' to the Windows users.
