FIRST HONOR I Philippines Most Malware-infected country in the region — Microsoft

MANILA, Philippines — The country leads the pack in the number of malware infections in the region according to a report by Microsoft Corp.
According to the 16th edition of the Microsoft (SIR) Security Intelligence Report, both of the country’s malware encounter and infection rate were well above the global average and other countries in the region.
The Philippines’ malware infection rate for the 4th quarter of 2013 hit 32 percent, the highest in the region as well as other countries such as Australia, United States, and way above the global average of 21.6 percent. Our malware encounter rate, defined as the percentage of computers running Microsoft security products that reported a malware, reached 46.3 per cent, an average figure for the region but way above the global average of 21.6 per cent.

“Almost half of the computers here in the Philippines encountered malware in the fourth quarter of 2013. For the Philippines, it has been above the worldwide average,” Tim Rains, director for Trustworthy Computing at Microsoft Corp., said in a media briefing.
Rains, however, stressed that though there though the infection rate for the Philippines may seem high, the actual percentage is low.
“It’s not out of hand. 32 infections out of 1,000 is just a fraction,” Rains said.
Tracking the worldwide trend, both the country’s encounter and infection rate have also increased. For the malware encounter rate, the country posted 40.8 percent in the first quarter, 45.1 percent in the second quarter, 43.9 percent in the third quarter, and 46.3 per cent in the fourth quarter. For the country’s malware infection rate, the figure grew from 13.4 percent in the first quarter of 2013, to 18.1 percent in the second quarter, dipped to 17.3 percent in the third quarter, and surged to 32.1 percent in the fourth quarter.

Security Malware Global Infection Map

In what might be the most ingenious ad campaign for anti-virus software we’ve ever seen, Kaspersky Lab has put has put together a terrifying, interactive infographic of sorts calling attention to malware threats in real-time. The “Cyberthreat Real-Time Map” visualizes our planet in relation to malware, displaying the infection rates in every country and ranking them based on which are the most infected. Russia comes in at number 1, with the United States and India taking the 2 and 3 spots, respectively. Of course, it’s nothing more than a clever endorsement for Kaspersky Lab’s Security Scan software, but it’s fascinating to see the reach of malware across the globe in such a visually evocative format. See for yourself on Kaspersky’s site.

Cryptocat, Now with Encrypted Facebook Chat

Cryptocat’s mission is to make encrypted chat accessible and easy to use. With Cryptocat celebrating its third birthday (already!), we’re happy to announce the new Encrypted Facebook Chat feature in the latest Cryptocat 2.2 update.

Facebook Chat as a Cryptocat Buddy List

Cryptocat can now log into your Facebook account for you, fetch your Facebook contacts, and if another contact is also using Cryptocat, you’ll be able to automatically set up an end-to-end encrypted chat. If a Facebook friend later logs in via Cryptocat, your chat will be immediately upgraded to an encrypted Cryptocat chat:

If both you and your Facebook friend use Cryptocat, your chats will be OTR-encrypted end-to-end and can’t be viewed by Facebook (or Cryptocat’s network.) This is how your chat will look like on Facebook:

Effectively, what Cryptocat is doing is benefitting from your Facebook Chat contact list as a readily available buddy list. As a compliment to Cryptocat’s ephemeral group chat feature, Encrypted Facebook Chat lets you view which of your friends are online and allows you to immediately set up encrypted chat with them.

Users will still be able chat with non-Cryptocat users from within Cryptocat — although those conversations will not be encrypted (and you should probably ask your friends to upgrade to Cryptocat too, wink wink.)

LTE TDD vs LTE FDD; Time-Division Long-Term Evolution

Time-division Long-Term Evolution (TD-LTE), also referred to as Long-Term Evolution Time-Division Duplex (LTE TDD), is a 4G telecommunications technology and standard co-developed by an international coalition of companies, including China Mobile, Datang Telecom, Huawei, Nokia Solutions and Networks, Qualcomm, Samsung, and ST-Ericsson. It is one of two variants of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology standard, the other being Frequency-Division Long-Term Evolution (LTE FDD).

LTE-TDD gamit ng ULTERA hindi yung common na LTE-FDD na gamit ng Globe at Smart.

The TDD mode is preferred for the following reasons:

1- It enables dynamic allocation of DL and UL resources to efficiently support asymmetric DL/UL traffic (adaptation of DL:UL ratio to DL/UL traffic).
2- It ensures channel reciprocity for better support of link adaptation; MIMO and other closed-loop advanced antenna techniques such as transmit beam-forming.
3- Unlike FDD, which requires a pair of channels, TDD only requires a single channel for both downlink and uplink providing greater flexibility for adaptation to varied global spectrum allocations.
4- Transceiver designs for TDD implementations are less complex and therefore less expensive (restrictions in the number of DL/UL switching points).

5-The TDD spectrum is less expensive while both offer similar performance/spectral efficiency. Therefore, more operators are heading to TDD for LTE.

There are two major differences between TD-LTE and LTE FDD: how data is uploaded and downloaded, and what frequency spectra the networks are deployed in.

While LTE FDD uses paired frequencies to upload and download data, TD-LTE uses a single frequency, alternating between uploading and downloading data through time.

The ratio between uploads and downloads on a TD-LTE network can be changed dynamically, depending on whether more data needs to be sent or received.TD-LTE and LTE FDD also operate on different frequency bands, with TD-LTE working better at higher frequencies, and LTE FDD working better at lower frequencies.Frequencies used for TD-LTE range from 1850 MHz to 3800 MHz, with several different bands being used. The TD-LTE spectrum is generally cheaper to access, and has less traffic.Further, the bands for TD-LTE overlap with those used for WiMAX, which can easily be upgraded to support TD-LTE.

Despite the differences in how the two types of LTE handle data transmission, TD-LTE and LTE FDD share 90 percent of their core technology, making it possible for the same chipsets and networks to use both versions of LTE. A number of companies produce dual-mode chips or mobile devices, including Samsung and Qualcomm, while operators China Mobile Hong Kong Company Limited and Hi3G Access have developed dual-mode networks in China and Sweden, respectively.

As of January 2014, there were 28 commercial TD-LTE networks operating in 21 countries worldwide, with an additional 45 networks planned or in deployment.TD-LTE deployments are especially popular in Asia and the Pacific, with 47 percent of TD-LTE contracts awarded to vendors from this region. In second place is the Middle East, with 18 percent of contracts.According to a report conducted by research firm Ovum Ltd. in June of 2012, TD-LTE connections are expected to make up 25 percent of all LTE connections worldwide by 2016, with operators in Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, and Denmark having implemented the technology, or planning to in the future.

Google Glass Soon Available at CD -R King

Will we be able to buy Google’s latest wonder gadget in CD-R King? When you think about hi-end gadgets, the last retail chain you think about is CD-R King of all things affordable is set to get Google Glass in its stores soon, according to a teaser in the company’s Facebook page.

It’s not yet apparent if the company will only have demo devices of Google’s iconic gadget, or if the company will be selling them directly. There’s also a distinct possibility of the company selling Google Glass knockoffs as well – we wouldn’t be surprised, as the company’s range of gadgets go from USB sticks to an actual 3D printer, so it’s still in the realm of possibility. Still, even if the company is only allowing people to demo Google Glass, it’s an awesome gesture on their part – speaking as someone who have tried the gadget ourselves, it’s really an experience unto itself.

“Get ready to experience Google glass in our store” reads the text on the promotional poster posted on CD-R King’s Facebook page.

About Google Glass

The display has a 640x360 pixel resolution, which might sound a bit low at first, but bear in mind the panel is actually just a tiny piece near your right eye. Google claims it provides the equivalent picture to that of a 25-inch HD display when viewed from eight feet away. That sounds pretty good to us.
The built-in camera is a 5-megapixel unit with 720p video capture, while audio is handled via a bone conduction transducer. In other words, rather than having actual headphones it sends the audio vibrations directly through the small bones in your ear, which you then hear as sound.
Onboard storage is 16GB, although 12GB of this is usable as 4GB is presumably taken up by the software. The device is fully synced with Google’s cloud storage.
It charges with a standard microUSB cable. There’s also full Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity and you can link the headset up with your phone, if you wish.
Google is apparently launching an app called ‘MyGlass’ which can be installed on Android phones running Android 4.0.3 and above. The app is said to enable GPS navigation and SMS text messaging capabilities.

New Facebook Scam Wall Posts along with Freebies Malware/Virus Software installation.

If your Facebook News Feed is beginning to resemble a horror film festival, the real horrors are the hoaxes, scams, and malware contained within.
Malwarebytes reported on an epidemic of hoaxes with paranormal themes making their way around Facebook, including:
  • Alleged footage of an “actual” ghost attack.
  • A video featuring the Aswang, which Malwarebytes described as “a mythical shape-shifting were-dog/vampire/terrifying thing from the Philippines.”
  • Mermaids.
  • A huge great white shark tearing apart a sea captain.

According to Malwarebytes, users who click on the scam videos suffer various fates, including being asked to download or install updates to video players, which actually install malware. The ghost attack scam led to the installation of PUP.Optional.InstallBrain.A, while the Aswang prompted unsuspecting Facebook users to download “scan your PC” malware, the mermaids led to an iLivid install that was actually PUP.Optional.Bandoo, and the shark brought users to pages filled with spammy surveys and downloads.

Christopher Boyd of Malwarebytes wrote:
That concludes our spooky train ride through a mid-May haunted house of doom. Please keep your hands inside the cart until the gates have opened, and avoid clicking on fake Facebook videos at the gift counter.

With the  increase in various scams on Facebook to target user, it became very clear that not only does the social networking platform provide special opportunities for people to connect and share information; it also serves as a great and useful platform for scammers to spread malware or virus infections or redirect users to the sites of their own choice.
