A group of Russian and Swedish scientists got into "the depths of the depths" of matter

Thanks to the new supercomputer, a team of scientists from Russia and Sweden could virtually penetrate into the depths of matter, study the behavior of the electrons, and thus reduce the development time of new materials.

In 2014, the National Research Technological University "MISiS", with the participation of the Professor of Swedish Linköping University, Igor Abrikosov, opened the international level laboratory for simulation and development of new materials. The laboratory is equipped with a high-tech supercomputer cluster, allowing scientists to implement virtual experiments.

Now scientists of the world are puzzled by looking for new materials with desired properties. An experimental search for such materials requires a lot of time and money: there are so many combinations that scientists need to try before they find the optimal combination. Now a group of Russian and Swedish scientists can simulate experiments on a supercomputer, taking into account all possible elements and combinations thereof. So, to achieve their goals instead of real experiments, they can undertake hundreds of virtual ones, reducing the required number of actual physical experiments to the very few.

"The supercomputer is able in one second to perform the calculations which the entire population of the Earth could make in three and a half or four years before. This unique tool will help us to almost double the speed of development of new materials. Now the average period from discovering a new material to the stage of its implementation in production makes 10 to 15 years. Our goal is to reduce this gap to 5-7 years", said the head of the Laboratory of modeling and development of new materials in the National Research Technological University "MISiS", Professor of Linköping University, Igor Abrikosov.

At the moment, scientists are working on simulation of titanium alloys for biomedical applications (implants with elastic properties of bones), new multicomponent steels for nuclear reactors buckets of the 4th generation, as well as alloys of nickel and aluminum. In addition, scientists are developing new coatings for cutting tools. Such coatings can improve the quality and speed in the metal industry processes.

All researches in this area are being conducted with an active collaboration of Russian and Swedish scientists. In the near future a memorandum on closer cooperation between MISiS and Linköping University will be signed. This will give a new impetus to the development of Russian-Swedish relations in the sphere of science. "

About MISiS

The National University of Science and Technology MISiS has a proud and distinguished history, having celebrated its 80th anniversary in June 2010. It originated as the Department of Metallurgy in the Moscow Academy of Mines, which the Soviet government established in 1918, and in the following decades it went through several transformations before achieving its current designation.

In the 20th century, the Moscow Academy of Mines and then the Moscow Steel Institute (founded in 1930) each played a prominent role in the industrialization of Soviet Russia. Today, the National University of Science and Technology MISiS is at the forefront in the development of Russia’s innovative, knowledge-based economy, supporting the nation’s ability to successfully compete with other advanced economies as well as to fully integrate into the international community. Following Russian federal policy in engineering and innovations, the university is working to develop research and development projects in prioritized areas of the economy, as identified by the presidential administration. MISiS’s goal is to create energy-effective technologies and environmentally-friendly methods of industrial production, and to produce new materials for use in energy-effective technologies.

MISiS supports a multi- and cross-disciplinary approach to education. Our mission emphasizes providing fundamental instruction at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as creating an organic bond between education and science.

MISiS is working to develop new mutually-beneficial relations with international industrial and educational partners, while continuing to nurture those already existing. Our institutional vision recognizes the seeming paradox that in the world of competition it is international cooperation that has the potential of creating an environment uniquely conducive to the attainment of the university’s goals and continued evolution.

Take advantage of Microsoft offer will let you keep your free 15GB of OneDrive storage

Microsoft has grudgingly agreed to let current OneDrive users keep their 15GB of free cloud storage and 15GB of free Camera Roll “bonus” storagefor mobile users who uploaded their mobile photos to OneDrive, rather than dropping you to 5GB as previously stated. Of course, there's a catch: You have to be aware of the offer and willing to endure a bit of spam.

Microsoft’s reputation has climbed of late, as it’s reached out and worked with customers on the development of Windows 10, Office, and even Solitaire. But the end of unlimited OneDrive storage was a real black eye for Microsoft’s outreach efforts, and even the latest offer feels a bit half-hearted. If you want your friends to be able to take advantage of the offer, you’ll need to share it with them.

To take advantage of the offer, visit this Microsoft page. Microsoft representatives said the company does not have a supplementary explanatory blog post or statement to add at the present, but interestingly the URL suggests the page is still in preview phase.

You’ve already navigated the first hurdle: Because users have to manually opt in to the offer, OneDrive users who are unaware of the deal won’t be able to take advantage of it.

And there’s a small catch: By selecting the offer, you agree “to receive promotional emails from OneDrive.” Microsoft also says you may unsubscribe from them—how to do that, however, isn’t exactly clear.

Unchecking the box for promotional email, then clicking the Keep your free storage button also appears to work.

Over 60,000 different users complained about Microsoft’s changes to its OneDrive policy, which also reneged on an earlier deal to supply Office 365 subscribers with unlimited OneDrive storage at a future date.

Google made an amazing Star Wars game that turns your phone into a lightsaber

Google "Lightsaber Escape" This is a two screen experience. In order to make your escape you need both a computer and compatible smartphone. Tablets are not supported. See below for a list of supported devices.

For the best experience use the latest version of Google Chrome on your phone and computer, and ensure you have a strong WiFi or data connection. We recommend connecting both devices to the same WiFi network.

Visit: https://lightsaber.withgoogle.com/

Type the URL into your mobile browser on your smartphone. For the best experience, we recommend using Google Chrome.

To initiate your lightsaber you must first connect and calibrate your phone. Once you begin your escape, you can turn on your lightsaber by pressing the blue button on the lightsaber handle you see on your phone screen.
