A year ago, when it came to light that German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s own personal mobile phone had been spied by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) for years, Surveillance has become a big issue for Germany. Such a big that prominent politicians are seriously considering using manual typewriters for sensitive documents instead of computers.

 

 

The head of the Germany's NSA Inquiry Committee, Patrick Sensburg said in an interview with the Morgenmagazin TV show on Monday night, that the government is seriously considering a low-tech solution to the ongoing espionage problem and to keep American eyes off of sensitive documents.

 

According to the Guardians translation of the German interview:

Interviewer: Are you considering typewriters?

Sensburg: As a matter of fact, we have - and not electronic models either.

Surprised interviewer: Really?

Sensburg: Yes, no joke.

Sensburg is heading up the Bundestag’s parliamentary inquiry into the NSA’s activities on German soil and is the one who know about the serious concerns caused by foreign states surveillance programs.

Germany's NSA Inquiry Committee was established in March to investigate allegations by NSA whistle blower and former contractor Edward Snowden that the United States government has been eavesdropping Germans and even bugged Chancellor Angela Merkel’s personal cell phone, an issue that has strained relationships and raised trust issues between old allies, Berlin and Washington.

The relations between the two became even more worse when earlier this month, Germany arrested a German intelligence officer who worked as a double agent and passed information to the CIA about the parliament’s NSA investigation. According to Sensburg, US snooping is ongoing.

After Edward Snowden released his first document about the U.S. government's surveillance activities, even Russia also thought to revert again to the old-school forms of communication, and bought 20 electric typewriters last year to keep inside communications more private, according to the Moscow Times.

Most of the time, your ISP automatically assigns a primary and secondary DNS server when your router or computer requests network information via DHCP. But what if those ISP-provided DNS servers aren't reliable or you're troubleshooting an issue and you suspect that DNS might not be working properly?

Primary DNS servers are sometimes called preferred DNS servers and secondary DNS servers are sometimes called alternate DNS servers. Primary and secondary DNS servers can be "mixed and matched" to provide another layer of redundancy.

[1] The DNS servers listed above as Level3 will automatically route to the nearest DNS server operated by Level3 Communications, the company that provides most of the ISPs in the US their access to the Internet backbone.

[2] Google also offers IPv6 public DNS servers: 2001:4860:4860::8888 and 2001:4860:4860::8844.

[3] OpenDNS also offers DNS servers that block adult content, called OpenDNS FamilyShield. Those DNS servers are 208.67.222.123 and 208.67.220.123. A premium DNS offering is also available, called OpenDNS Home VIP.

[4] The Norton ConnectSafe DNS servers listed above block sites hosting malware, phishing schemes, and scams, and is called Policy 1. Your Handset and laptops may soon be Powered by Water

WASHINGTON: Imagine if the humidity in the air could power your smartphone or laptop. It may soon become a reality!

Water droplets jumping from a highly repelling surface can be harnessed to produce electricity that could be used to power electronic devices, MIT scientists have found.

Last year, researchers discovered that when water droplets spontaneously jump away from superhydrophobic surfaces during condensation, they can gain electric charge in the process.

Now, the same team has demonstrated that this process can generate small amounts of electricity that might be used to power electronic devices.

The approach developed by Nenad Miljkovic, Evelyn Wang from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and colleagues could lead to devices to charge cell phones or other electronics using just the humidity in the air. As a side benefit, the system could also produce clean water.

The device itself could be simple, Miljkovic said, consisting of a series of interleaved flat metal plates.

Although his initial tests involved copper plates, he said any conductive metal would do, including cheaper aluminium.

In initial testing, the amount of power produced was vanishingly small — just 15 picowatts, or trillionths of a watt, per square centimetre of metal plate.

But Miljkovic said the process could easily be tuned to achieve at least 1 microwatt, or millionth of a watt, per square centimetre.

Such output would be comparable to that of other systems that have been proposed for harvesting waste heat, vibrations, or other sources of ambient energy, and represents an amount that could be sufficient to provide useful power for electronic devices in some remote locations.

For example, Miljkovic has calculated that at 1 microwatt per square centimetre, a cube measuring about 50 centimetre on a side — about the size of a typical camping cooler — could be sufficient to fully charge a cell phone in about 12 hours. 

There are some constraints: Because the process relies on condensation, it requires a humid environment, as well as a source of temperatures colder than the surrounding air, such as a cave or river.

In a practical device, two arrays of metal plates, like fins on a radiator, would be interleaved, so that they are very close but not touching. The system would operate passively, with no moving parts.

For powering remote, automated environmental sensors, even a tiny amount of energy might be sufficient; any location where dew forms would be capable of producing power for a few hours in the morning, Miljkovic said.

"Water will condense out from the atmosphere, it happens naturally," he said.

The findings are published in the journal Applied Physics Letters.
