The US government threatened Internet giant Yahoo! with a $250,000 fine per day

The US government threatened Internet giant with a $250,000 fine per day several years ago if it failed to comply with National Security Agency’s notorious PRISM Surveillance program, according to unclassified court documents released by Yahoo! on Thursday.

The documents released by Yahoo! shed new lights on the NSA’s secret surveillance program PRISM, which was previously leaked from the agency’s confidential documents provided by Global surveillance whistleblower and former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.

PRISM allowed NSA to intercept and process not just the United States telecoms companies data including Verizon which has 98.9 million customers, but also some of the most widely used and major Internet firms including Microsoft, Google, Yahoo!, Facebook and Skype. However, Officials have said the deeply contentious program ended in 2011.

"The released documents underscore how we had to fight every step of the way to challenge the US Government’s surveillance efforts," the company's general counsel Ron Bell said on Yahoo's Tumblr page. "At one point, the US Government threatened the imposition of $250,000 in fines per day if we refused to comply."

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA) of Review, which provides legal authority in surveillance requests, released more than 1,500 pages of previously secret documents related to Yahoo!'s 2007 challenge to the government's demand for data, according to Bell, who said that in 2007, the US government "amended a key law to demand user information from online services."

The Christopher Soghoian, Principal Technologist at ACLU, points out the $250k-a-day fine, which means $90m (£55.42m) fine a year, seems cheap for the trust of users worldwide. As Yahoo!'s net income in 2008 was $424.3m.

SanDisk Extreme PRO 512GB World’s Highest Capacity SD Card

Since SanDisk unveiled its first 512MB SD card in 2003, capacity demands have increased exponentially and the new 512GB SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I card represents a 1,000-fold capacity increase in just over a decade, yet maintains the same size footprint. SanDisk’s most powerful and highest capacity SD UHS-I memory card yet, the 512GB card delivers write speeds up to 90 MB/s* and UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) recording speed for high resolution, real-world color and stutter-free 4K Ultra HD video1. Transfer speeds up to 95 MB/s* move data quickly for efficient post-production workflow.

International Broadcasting Convention, AMSTERDAM, Sept. 11, 2014 – SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK), a global leader in flash storage solutions,  launched its 512GB** SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I memory card, the world’s highest capacity SD™ card on the market. The new offering is designed to meet the demands of industry professionals who require the most advanced gear available for shooting 4K Ultra High Definition (3840x2160p) video, Full HD video (1920x1080)1 and high-speed burst mode photography.

The 512GB SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I card delivers both the speed and capacity needed to support 4K Ultra HD video capture, enabling users to shoot tremendous amounts of content without disrupting the moment.

The new offering comes with key features designed for pro-level action:

  •     Built for and tested in harsh conditions—temperature proof, water proof, shock proof, and x-ray proof2
  •     Lifetime limited warranty3
  •     RescuePRO® Deluxe data recovery software download offer4, for bringing accidentally deleted images back to life
The Extreme PRO comes in SDXC format and utilizes UHS-I interface, which is good for up to 104MB/s.

The 512GB Extreme PRO consists of 32 x 128Gbit (16GB) dies. The photo above is from SanDisk's 2014 Investor Day presentation where the company claimed that it has the technology for a 32-die SDXC card and with the Extreme PRO the technology has made it into the retail. Since SanDisk/Toshiba doesn't have a 256Gbit NAND die (nobody has one in mass production yet), the only way to achieve 512GB is through a 32-die stack. SanDisk hasn't specified whether the NAND is MLC or TLC, but given that it is a high-end product I'm guessing it is MLC based.

Stacking more dies on top of each other will always have a negative impact on yield as the wires have to be longer and there are more wires to connect, so the room for errors increases and thus the manufacturing cost goes up as well.

All capacities are available now and the MSRP for the 512GB model is $800, which is certainly high since 512GB SSDs retail for close to $200.

5 MILLION GMAIL CREDENTIALS LEAKED ONLINE

The news broke when a user posted a link to the log-in credentials on Reddit frequented by hackers, professional and aspiring. But the archive file containing nearly 5 million Gmail addresses and plain text passwords was posted on Russian Bitcoin security forum known as btcsec.com on Tuesday night by a user with the online alias “tvskit”, according to C News, a Russian news outlet.

The user who exposed Gmail users’ credentials said that almost 4.93 million accounts allegedly affected belong to English, Russian and Spanish users and claimed that over 60 percent of accounts are active.

This means, there is a silver lining in this leak, i.e., 40 percent of the passwords are invalid or out of date, which could be a good news for those Gmail users who have recently changed their passwords and are concerned about their account’s security – there’s a chance that they’re not at risk at all.
"We can't confirm that it is indeed as much as 60 percent, but a great amount of the leaked data is legitimate," said Peter Kruse, the chief technology officer of CSIS Security Group.

GOOGLE SAYS NO SECURITY BREACH

Google, on its part, believes that the usernames and passwords didn’t come from a security breach of its system. That means, the credentials had been stolen by phishing campaigns and unauthorized access to user accounts.

"It’s important to note that in this case and in others, the leaked usernames and passwords were not the result of a breach of Google systems," Google, which operates Gmail email service, explained in a post on its online security blog. "Often, these credentials are obtained through a combination of other sources."

"We found that less than 2% of the username and password combinations might have worked, and our automated anti-hijacking systems would have blocked many of those login attempts. We've protected the affected accounts and have required those users to reset their passwords."
The leaked passwords not only give access to users’ Gmail accounts, but other Google services as well, including Google Drive, and the mobile payment system Google Wallet.

CHECK IF YOU ARE AFFECTED

A website called isleaked.com allows users to check if their email address is among those leaked. People who are concerned about the security of their account are advised to go ahead and change their password.

Cloned Flappy Bird app can steal and collect the naked photos

The developer of fake Flappy Bird app took advantage of the user's "carelessness" of granting the permissions to Android apps.
A forum post on anonymous image board AnonIP shows that the group of hackers may have used a cloned Flappy Bird app to steal and collect the naked photos of females from their Android devices and then send them to remote servers.

The post on a hackers' forum, written in late July this year, was discovered by security consultant Nik Cubrilovic. It detailed how the supposed developer had developed a malware-ridden “clone” of Flappy Bird app for Android devices that would exploit app permissions granted during installation in an effort to steal the photos.
I am a fucking genious [sic]… Hear me out. I.. modded… the app,” the developer explained in the post. “It now secretly downloads all of the phones pictures to my server when the game is running. Note: this app will only work for android,” he added.
The developer want to release a copy of cloned Flappy Bird app on the Google’s Play Store but he didn’t want to risk his developer license, as the app violates Google play’s terms. But, to solve the problem, he was searching for a second developer account, specifically created for the purpose of stealing pictures from infected Android devices.

He also asked for financial support from his fellow anons in order to make a second Google Play developer account and promises to “post any wins [stolen photos] obtained in this thread.” A new developer licence cost $20.

All game is based on the users’ negligence to check the permissions of mobile apps they granted without even knowing of the fact that any app is asking access to your device’ stored photographs. It is extremely phishy, but many of you don’t even pay attention to these details and accept those permissions blindly.

Flappy Bird, developed by a 29-year old, Dong Nguyen, was one of the top free gaming apps on Google’s Play Store. But after the developer of Flappy Bird pulled the gaming app from both the Apple and Google app stores, it led to the creation of dozens and dozens of Flappy Bird clones, out of which many identified as malicious.
