Microsoft could force you to install Windows 10, making it harder for you to cancel or opt-out of upgrading

Microsoft is reportedly making it harder for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users to avoid the upgrade to Windows 10.

Reports are circulating that some Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users are claiming that the latest Windows 10 OS has begun to automatically install itself on their PCs.

Instead, a message says that the “upgrade to Windows 10 is ready,” and prompts users to “restart your PC to begin the installation.” Another user claims to have seen a countdown timer for installing Windows 10.

According to complaints by users, Windows Update screen is only offering them the option to either:

Start the upgrade process, or Reschedule the upgrade for a later date .

Some users now claim that they no longer see an option in the Control Panel to install updates to their current version of Windows., with an option to reschedule but no way to call off the upgrade entirely.

Microsoft said that the issue occurred with an optional update in Windows Update that was checked by default. Microsoft has now acknowledged the issue and reverted the checkbox, calling it "a mistake."

The issue actually resided in the Windows Update process. Microsoft has listed Windows 10 as an "Optional" update, and normally these updates are unticked, meaning a user has to manually check them to install the OS – it shouldn't be installed automatically.

Now this recent so-called mistake by Microsoft shows that how much the company is desperate to bring Windows 7 and Windows 8 users onto Windows 10.

The government of Uganda used FinFisher Spyware to target politicians, journalists, and activists

The Ugandan government purchased FinFisher in 2012, documents show, after Museveni launched Operation Fungua Macho ("open your eyes"). The initiative involved 70 intelligence officials, and was launched in response to widespread political unrest that erupted over alleged corruption, police brutality, and high living costs following the 2011 election. More than 600 people were arrested or detained, including members of parliament.

The government of Uganda used sophisticated surveillance technology to target opposition members, journalists, and activists, according to an investigation from the London-based watchdog Privacy International. The report, based on secret government documents, shows how Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni personally spearheaded a campaign to spy on, and ultimately vanquish opposition movements following the 2011 presidential election. The investigation was conducted in coordination with the BBC, and also claims that the Ugandan government is close to purchasing a new communications monitoring center ahead of next year's presidential election.

The government's weapon of choice was a highly invasive form of spyware called FinFisher, produced by Gamma Group International, a UK-based company with affiliates in various other countries.

FinFisher also known as FinSpy is capable of remotely monitoring computers, smartphones, and other equipment in real-time, and has been sold on the open market to repressive governments.

FinFisher was the "backbone" of the operation, Privacy International reports, which aimed to blackmail opposition members and "crush... civil disobedience." FinFisher "access points" were installed in Uganda's parliament and other government institutions, and Museveni's opponents were targeted in their homes, as well. Gamma trained four Ugandan officials on how to use FinFisher in late 2011, after a second wave of protests erupted.

According to Privacy International, Uganda is close to acquiring a centralized communications monitoring center ahead of next year's presidential election — the fifth since Museveni came to power in 1986. In 2013, the government began soliciting bids to build the system from seven companies: Huawei, ZTE, NICE, Verint, Macro-System, Gamma Group, and Hacking Team. One internal document suggests that Israel-based NICE is the frontrunner to win the bid, though the system is currently not operational.

In a letter to Privacy International, a government spokesperson denied that the surveillance program exists. "President Museveni does not use criminal blackmail as a political tool to win over or deal with opponents," the spokesperson said, "it does not add any value as (the) government enjoys broad political legitimacy and support." Government spokesman Colonel Shaban Bantariza tells the BBC that there is "no evidence" that any opponents have been monitored.

In a statement to the BBC, Gamma said its products are designed to combat "terrorist threats, drug cartels, other major organized crime, and pedophile rings." "Gamma undertakes an absolute obligation of confidentiality to the governments which purchase its products and systems," the company said. "Gamma does not assist or encourage any government agency in the misuse of Gamma's products and systems."

Upgrade to new Windows 10 Machine Microsoft will pay $200 for your old laptop, or $300 if it's a MacBook

Microsoft has launched a promotion called Easy Trade Up , because they want old PC user to switch to new Windows 10 machines. If you buy a qualifying computer from the Microsoft Store for over $599 until October 20th, the company will give you a rebate after you send in your old laptop or all-in-one — you'll get $200 for a Windows computer, and $300 for a MacBook.

This kind of promotion is a tactic Microsoft uses pretty frequently when it wants to juice sales. Recent years have seen the company offer $200 for iPads traded in against a Surface, $100 for PS3 owners switching to the Xbox One, $650 off a Surface Pro 3 in exchange for a MacBook Air, and $200 gift cards for a traded-in iPhone.

Your trade-in computer has to be under six years old and in working order with a minimum display size of 11.6 inches. The offer is running in the US, UK, Canada, India, Brazil, France, Germany, and Taiwan.

Microsoft has revealed latest Windows 10 build 10565 supports Nested Virtualization Step by Step How to Enable it

Microsoft has revealed that the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview supports nested virtualization, which lets you launch a virtual machine within another virtual machine -- yes, you can run Windows inside of Windows inside of Windows. The trick is a new feature that supports hardware-based virtualization within a primary virtual machine, providing for that one extra layer. There are limits, of course.

Features like dynamic memory won't work, and nesting currently requires an Intel processor with VT-x support (most chips from the past several years will do). So long as everything lines up, though, you too can create a hall of mirrors effect on your PC -- even if it doesn't serve much of a practical purpose for most people.

Build 10565 -- It is a very early preview

Insider Hub announced the release of build 10565 to Windows Insiders on the Fast ring.  This build contains an early preview of nested virtualization.

When I say it is an “early” preview, I mean it – there are plenty of known issues, and there is functionality which we still need to build. We wanted to share this feature with Insiders as soon as possible though, even if that meant things are still rough around the edges.

This post will give a quick overview of what nested virtualization is, and briefly cover how it works. The end of this post will explain how to enable it, so you can try it out. Please read the “known issues” section before trying this feature.

In the image below, you can see a host machine running a virtual machine, which in turn is running its own guest virtual machine. This is made possible by nested virtualization. Behold, three levels of Cortana!

What is nested virtualization?

In essence, this feature virtualizes certain hardware features that are required to run a hypervisor in a virtual machine.

Hyper-V relies on hardware virtualization support (e.g. Intel VT-x and AMD-V) to run virtual machines. Typically, once Hyper-V is installed, the hypervisor hides this capability from guest virtual machines, preventing guests virtual machines from installing Hyper-V (and many other hypervisors, for that matter).

Nested virtualization exposes hardware virtualization support to guest virtual machines. This allows you to install Hyper-V in a guest virtual machine, and create more virtual machines “within” that underlying virtual machine.

Known issues: important!

Like I said earlier – this is still just a “preview” of this feature. Obviously, this feature should not be used in production environments.  Below is a list of known issues:

  • Both hypervisors need to be the latest versions of Hyper-V. Other hypervisors will not work. Windows Server 2012R2, or even builds prior to 10565 will not work.
  • Once nested virtualization is enabled in a VM, the following features are no longer compatible with that VM. These actions will either fail, or cause the virtual machine not to start if it is hosting other virtual machines:
  • Dynamic memory must be OFF. This will prevent the VM from booting.
  • Runtime memory resize will fail.
  • Applying checkpoints to a running VM will fail.
  • Live migration will fail -- in other words, a VM which hosts other VMs cannot be live migrated.
  • Save/restore will fail.

Note: these features still work in the “innermost” guest VM. The restrictions only apply to the first layer VM.

  • Once nested virtualization is enabled in a VM, MAC spoofing must be enabled for networking to work in its guests.
  • Hosts with Device Guard enabled cannot expose virtualization extensions to guests. You must first disable VBS in order to preview nested virtualization.
  • Hosts with Virtualization Based Security (VBS) enabled cannot expose virtualization extensions to guests. You must first disable VBS in order to preview nested virtualization.
  • This feature is currently Intel-only. Intel VT-x is required.
  • Beware: nested virtualization requires a good amount of memory. I managed to run a VM in a VM with 4 GB of host RAM, but things were tight.

How to Turn on Hyper V

1. Go to Control Panel  and click Programs

2. Click Turn windows features on or off and select that item

3. Select and enable Hyper-V check all box.

4. Restart  your PC to install updates.

Creating and Running A Windows 10 VM

1. Go to Start  find Windows Administrative Tools
2 Open Hyper V as Administrator

3. To begin creating the VM click Action > New > Virtual Machine

  • To begin creating the VM click ActiOn the Before You Begin screen click Next.
  • On the Specify Name and Location screen, enter the desired name for the VM and click Next.n > New > Virtual Machine
  • On the Specify Generation screen, select Generation 1 and click Next.
  • On the Assign Memory screen, enter a memory size of 2048 MB or higher and click Next.
  • On the Configure Networking screen, select the connection that connects to an external resource for internet connectivity and click Next.
  • On the Connect Virtual Hard Disk screen, select Create a virtual hard disk, enter 20GB or higher for storage size and click Next.
  • On the Installation Options screen, select Install an operating System from a bootable CD/DVD-Rom

Select Image file (.iso), browse your computer to find the Windows 10 Technical Preview .iso file downloaded in Step 1 and click Next.
  • On the Completing the New Virtual Machine Wizard screen, review the selected options and click Finish.
  • The Windows 10 Technical Preview VM is now created.
  • Back in Hyper-V Manager, right-click on the newly created VM and click Start.
  • Right-click again on the newly created VM and click Connect.
  • Once connected, commence the installation of Windows 10 Technical Preview on the newly created virtual instance.

How to enable nested virtualization

Step 1: Create a VM

Step 2: Run the enablement script

Given the configuration requirements (e.g. dynamic memory must be off), we’ve tried to make things easier by providing a PowerShell script.

This script will check your configuration, change anything which is incorrect (with permission), and enable nested virtualization for a VM. Note that the VM must be off.

Invoke-WebRequest https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Microsoft/Virtualization-Documentation/master/hyperv-tools/Nested/Enable-NestedVm.ps1 -OutFile ~/Enable-NestedVm.ps1
~/Enable-NestedVm.ps1 -VmName <VmName>

Step 3: Install Hyper-V in the guest

From here, you can install Hyper-V in the guest VM.

Invoke-Command -VMName "myVM" -ScriptBlock { Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -FeatureName Microsoft-Hyper-V -Online; Restart-Computer }

Step 4: Enable networking (optional)

Once nested virtualization is enabled in a VM, MAC spoofing must be enabled for networking to work in its guests. Run the following PowerShell (as administrator) on the host machine:

Set-VMNetworkAdapter -VMName <VMName> -MacAddressSpoofing on

Step 5: Create nested VMs

FAQ and troubleshooting

My VM won’t start, what should I do?

First, make sure dynamic memory is OFF. If this was not the issue, run this PowerShell script on your host machine from an elevated prompt. This script reports whether your host and VMs are configured properly for nested.

Invoke-WebRequest https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Microsoft/Virtualization-Documentation/master/hyperv-tools/Nested/Get-NestedVirtStatus.ps1 -OutFile ~/Get-NestedVirtStatus.ps1
~/Get-NestedVirtStatus.ps1

My Virtual Machine Connection keeps being lost.

This is a known issue. If you are using a blank password, please change your password and the issue should be resolved.

Go build VMs in VMs!

Cheers, Theo Thompson

Updated: Added clarification for points of confusion in the comments and added a PowerShell snippet for enabling Hyper-V in the guest OS.

Windows 10 PC Build 10565+ Improves Device Activation

Windows Insider Hub  received a lot of feedback from Insiders that it should be easier to activate Windows 10 on devices when taking advantage of the free upgrade offer from genuine versions of Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.  With build 10565+ of the Windows 10 Insider Preview on PCs, if your device doesn’t automatically activate after installation, you can now enter the product key that was used to activate the prior version of Windows on the same device, by going to Settings > Update & Security > Activation, and selecting ‘Change Product Key’.  If you prefer a clean install of Windows 10 by booting from media, you can now also enter the product key from prior Windows versions on qualifying devices during setup.

 Details:

The product key from the prior version of Windows must correspond to the equivalent edition of Windows 10 you’re trying to activate as determined by the like to like Edition matrix for Windows 10. For example, you cannot activate Windows 10 Pro on a device that ran Windows 7 Home edition by using the Windows 7 Home product key.

If you have an OEM Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 device wherein the product key is provisioned into the device firmware by the OEM during manufacturing, Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10565+ will automatically use the firmware product key upon rebooting after installation as long as the Windows 10 Edition matches the edition of Windows 8 that your device originally ran.

Please note that with Windows 10, we introduced a new activation technology that uses “digital entitlements” (more information available at Activation in Windows 10) that  doesn’t require product keys, basically you no longer need to remember and enter product keys. Using product keys from prior Windows version to activate Windows 10 will activate your device using a digital entitlement.

Finally, once you activate Windows 10 or Windows 10 Insider Preview (Build 10240 and higher) – you’ll be able to install public releases and Windows 10 Insider Preview builds of the same edition of Windows 10 seamlessly without the need to re-enter product keys.

Microsoft also revealed that the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview supports nested virtualization, which lets you launch a virtual machine within another virtual machine -- yes, you can run Windows inside of Windows inside of Windows. The trick is a new feature that supports hardware-based virtualization within a primary virtual machine, providing for that one extra layer. There are limits, of course.

VM inside of another VM

Features like dynamic memory won't work, and nesting currently requires an Intel processor with VT-x support (most chips from the past several years will do). So long as everything lines up, though, you too can create a hall of mirrors effect on your PC -- even if it doesn't serve much of a practical purpose for most people.

Google Now is Listening… and Recording too

Google is not just listening to your searches, but the search engine is also recording and storing every single voice search you make.
OK, Google is Listening… and Recording too.
Google is incredibly accurate at understanding your voice. The company secretly stores its users' searches from its voice-activated assistant Google's Voice Search and search feature Google Now to turn up relevant advertisements as well as improve the feature.
But what many of you do not realize is that after every voice searches you made, Google makes a recording of it and stores it in a remote part of your account.

Listen to Your Own Voice Recorded by Google

However, it's no surprise to know that Google is recording our voice because it's nothing new, Microsoft Virtual Assistant  "Cortana" do record your voice also.

Listen to your own voice recording by visiting your "Voice & Audio Activity" page in the Google Dashboard and you will find a list of all the voice searches you have made.

You can delete your voice recordings.

How to Delete All Your Stored Voice Records from Google Now

You can delete your voice recordings. That's easy like Cortana.
Log in to your Google account, head on to your archive of Google Now sessions and then open up the page for your 'Voice and Audio Activity.'

If Voice and Audio Activity is turned ON, you will find a list of all the voice commands you have made to Google Now, along with buttons next to each one of them that will let you play them.

From there, select one or more or all of the recordings from the Checkbox, and hit "delete" button at the top of your system's screen.

There is a way to turn OFF Voice and Audio Activity on your Google account  "Setting", but unfortunately, this will not stop Google from recording your voice. So, just avoid Google Now feature to prevent yourself.

Google Chromecast 2 : New Round Shape and Dedicated Apps for Smartphone

Google just released the second generation of its own Internet video box, the super-inexpensive Chromecast ($35). But the new, sibling product, Chromecast Audio, is actually far more disruptive and interesting.

A lot of the best stuff to watch is now online. All those movies and TV shows from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video, iTunes, YouTube, HBO Go, and so on. And lot of people like to watch those Internet videos on a TV.

It’s not actually a “box.” The original looked like a flash drive that plugged straight into your TV. The new one is now a plastic disc, available in four fun fruit flavors, with a short, permanently attached HDMI cable:

What’s new in the Chromecast 2? The size and shape are new, of course, but that’s not just cosmetic. Google says that the disc contains three WiFi antennas and some sophisticated circuitry that select the strongest signal, no matter what the position and angle of the gadget. The result: Less video stuttering, especially when the WiFi signal is weak.

Now, when you’re not playing anything, the Chromecast fills your TV with gorgeous nature photos, which is a surprisingly sweet touch.

The built-in cable is welcome and useful. The connector is also magnetized, so that it lies flat against the disc when not in use.

That’s cool but absolutely bizarre. The Chromecast is going to spend its life hanging from the back of your TV—when would you ever care about a four-inch cable flopping free in your luggage..

Chromecast also needs power. You can plug it into the wall—or, if you’re lucky, your TV has USB jacks on the back, too. You can plug the Chromecast into one of those, with less clutter and cord tangling.

How to setup and how it works

Finishing the setup takes about two minutes. You download an app (Android or iOS), introduce it to your Wi-Fi network, and give your Chromecast a name.

Now you’re ready. You open a video app, like YouTube, Netflix, Google Play, or thousands of others. (That’s a big improvement from the three apps that were compatible when the Chromecast debuted in 2013.) When you open a video to play, a special icon appears:

Tap the icon and then your Chromecast’s name—and that video is now playing on your TV.

The Chromecast gets the video straight from the Internet. The phone is just your remote control; it’s not actually streaming any video itself. (You can even adjust the volume using the phone’s physical volume keys.) Your phone isn’t using any data or battery power.

The beauty is that you can do other things on your phone while you’re watching your show, like running apps or even turning it off. The downside, of course, is that you have to wake and unlock your phone just to control playback. That’s not as handy as having a dedicated remote control. (One handy exception: On Android, a Pause button appears right on the phone’s lock screen.)

Not all video apps display the little Chromecast icon; Amazon Instant Video and Apple’s own iTunes videos are among the holdouts. (Can you say, “bitter competition with Google”?)

But the Chromecast offers an evilly clever workaround. It turns out that you can also send any Web page to your TV, from any device: phone, tablet, Mac or PC laptop. All you have to do is use Google’s Chrome browser, with the free Chromecast extension installed. Now you can beam Apple’s videos or Amazon’s videos to your TV, despite their best efforts to stay out of Google’s ecosystem.

The new Chromecast app has a new “What’s On” screen that rounds up, on one page, recommended videos from 20 different Chromecast-compatible apps. (This feature is available only on Android; it’s coming soon to iOS.)

The new app has a Search box, so you can plumb all of your video apps for a show or actor’s name. And it lists Chromecast-compatible apps, to help you get more out of your $35.

The new Chromecast also offers something called Fast Play. That’s when the Chromecast tries to guess what you’ll want to play next, and starts downloading the video in advance, so it’ll be ready if you hit the Play button.

Truth is, the Chromecast isn’t quite as essential as it once was, now that Internet video apps come built into so many components you already own: your video recorder, game console, or the TV itself.

Yet you may want one anyway. It’s just much easier to search for what you want using your phone’s touchscreen, on-screen keyboard, and voice dictation features. And, I mean—$35! That’s still the world’s least expensive way to add Internet video to a TV that doesn’t already have built-in apps.
