Google Data Saver extension for Chrome Beta

Google want to save its users' bandwidth at home. The company has released a "Data Saver extension for Chrome," bringing its data compression feature for its desktop users for the first time.
While tethering to a mobile Hotspot for Internet connection for your laptop, this new Data Saver extension for Chrome helps you reduce bandwidth usage by compressing the pages you visit over the Internet.

If you are unaware of it, the data compression proxy service by Google is designed to save users' bandwidth, load pages faster, and increase security (by checking for malicious web pages) on your smartphones and tablets.

REDUCE AS MUCH AS 50% OF DATA USAGE

Until now, the data compression service has been meant to benefit only mobile users, but the latest Data Saver Chrome Extension aims at helping desktop users by reducing their data usage by as much as 50 percent.
"Reduces data usage [bandwidth] by using Google servers to optimize pages you visit," the extension's official description reads. "Browse more for less! When this [Data Saver] extension is enabled, Chrome will use Google servers to compress [web] pages you visit before downloading them."
When you visit a website, web server delivers the requested files to your browser. If enabled by the server, Gzip compresses web pages and style sheets before sending them over to the browser.
Gzip compression drastically reduces transfer time since the files are much smaller.
Data Saver Extension for Chrome checks if the website you visited has gzip enabled or not. If not, it compresses the requested web page via Google Data Compression proxy and makes it significantly smaller.

"The proxy performs intelligent compression and minification of HTML, JavaScript and CSS resources, which removes unnecessary whitespace, comments, and other metadata which is not essential to the rendering of the page. These optimizations, combined with mandatory gzip compression for all resources, can yield substantial bandwidth savings for the client." Google explains.

AVAILABLE FOR CHROME 41 AND HIGHER

The Data Saver Chrome extension currently doesn't support secure SSL pages or incognito pages, and Google notes that users may experience issues when they have enabled the extension. Data Saver is available on Chrome both for Android as well as iOS.

User will need Chrome 41 or higher version to use the extension. As soon as you install it, the extension starts to work by default. In case you want to disable it, click on the Data Saver icon in the menu bar and select "Turn Off Data Saver."

You can now download Google's new Data Saver extension for Chrome, which is currently in beta version, from the Chrome Web Store. The extension was released on March 23, without any announcement from the search engine giant.

A Kit costs less than $20 can Hack Car

Two Security researchers - Javier Vazquez-Vidal and Alberto Garcia Illera have developed a home-made gadget called 'CAN Hacking Tools (CHT)', a tiny device smaller than your Smartphone, which is enough to hack your Cars.

The Kit costs less than $20, but is far capable to give away the entire control of your car to an attacker from windows and headlights to its steering and brakes.
The device uses the Controller Area Network (CAN) ports that are built into cars for computer-system checks, and draws power from the car’s electrical system. Injecting a malicious code to CAN ports allows an attacker to send wireless commands remotely from a computer.

Once hackers take hold of this network they can control lights, locks, steering and even brakes.

They have already tested their CHT device on four different vehicles and successfully did tricks, including applying Emergency brakes while the car was in motion that could potentially cause a sudden stop in traffic, switching off headlights, setting off alarms, and affecting the steering.
Till now their device is capable to communicate via Bluetooth only, which is limited to minor range, but soon they will upgrade it to use a GSM cellular radio that would make their device possible to control from miles away.

“All the ingredients of their tool are off-the-shelf components, so that even if the device is discovered, it wouldn’t necessarily provide clues as to who planted it. It’s totally untraceable”, says Vazquez Vidal. “A car is a mini network,” says his second partner Garcia Illera adding, “And right now there’s no security implemented.”

Pwn2Own Hacking Competition 2015 with $557,500 USD bounty paid out to researchers

For the past 4 days, security researchers have descended on Vancouver for a Google-sponsored contest called Pwn2Own, which offers top-dollar prizes for anyone who can publicly exploit bugs in popular browsers and other widely used software like Windows OS, Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash.

During the second and final day of this year’s hacking contest, the latest version of all the four major browsers including Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Apple Safari, were compromised by the two security researchers.

Sponsored by HP's Zero Day Initiative program, the Pwn2Own Hacking Competition ran two days at a security conference in Vancouver, Canada. The final highlights for Pwn2Own 2015 are quite impressive:

5 bugs in the Windows operating system
4 bugs in Internet Explorer 11
3 bugs in Mozilla Firefox
3 bugs in Adobe Reader
3 bugs in Adobe Flash
2 bugs in Apple Safari
1 bug in Google Chrome
$557,500 USD bounty paid out to researchers

A single researcher made $225,000 (legally!) by hacking browsers this week.
The star of the show was South Korean security researcher Jung Hoon Lee, nicknamed "lokihardt," who worked alone and nabbed the single highest payout of the competition in the Pwn2Own history, an amazing bounty of $110,000 in just two minutes.

Lee was able to take down both stable and beta versions of Google Chrome browser by exploiting a buffer overflow race condition bug in the browser and nabbed $75,000 as bug bounty.

For this same bug, Lee also nabbed an extra $25,000 for gaining system access by targeting an information leak and a race condition in two Windows kernel drivers. To hack the beta version of Chrome, Google’s Project Zero rewarded Lee by an extra $10,000. So, he earned a grand total of $110,000.

Earlier in the day, Lee also earned $65,000 for hacking the 64-bit Internet Explorer 11 with a time-of-check to time-of-use (TOCTOU) vulnerability that gained him read/write privileges on the browser. He used a sandbox escape via JavaScript injection to evade Windows defenses mechanism.
By using a use-after-free exploit and a separate sandbox escape, Lee also took down Apple's Safari browser. The hack earned him $50,000 and brought his total winnings to $225,000 from the contest.
