Facebook's Messenger app for Windows 10 upgraded now does voice and video calls

Facebook has  started rolling out last week the Windows 10 version of its standalone Messenger app with voice and video calling.

A Facebook spokesperson told the publication that it only started rolling out last week. When the feature does go live for you, you'll get call notifications if someone rings you up and be able to leave voicemails in your friends' inboxes. VentureBeat says you'll also be able to choose which camera to use, record your video calls and do group voice -- not video, unfortunately -- calls if the whole squad wants to chat.

Facebook has also updated WhatsApp for Windows Phone with video calling capability, a Spanish website has reported. However, it's an experimental release exclusively for select beta users, so you'll have to be really lucky to be able to test it out before everyone else.

Facebook launches Messenger Lite designed for older Android devices with limited storage

Facebook announcing today a new standalone version of its Messenger app, Messenger Lite, specifically designed for older Android devices with limited storage and for slower, data-constrained Internet connections.

Idea being that not everyone in the world has the premium hardware and superfast data connectivity that its full-fat messaging product assumes.

“With Messenger Lite, people are able to quickly and easily send text, photos and links to anyone using Messenger or Messenger Lite,” writes Facebook introducing the new app.

Or of course they could just use SMS.

The move follows Facebook launching a stripped down version of its main Android app for users in emerging markets last year. That app, called Facebook Lite, eschews data-intensive content like video and location-powered features like Nearby Friends to offer a more basic feature set and low res imagery in an app that’s less than 1MB in size.

Earlier this year Facebook revealed usage of this no-frills Facebook app had ballooned to 100 million monthly actives just nine months after launch, confirming it as it’s fastest growing app at that point — a growth trick it’s clearly hoping to repeat now with Messenger Lite.

Albeit Messenger Lite is not so modest in size: Facebook says the new stripped down Messenger is around 10MB. Although Android hardware continues to improve, even at the affordability focused end of the pipe.

In terms of features, Messenger Lite supports what Facebook dubs “core experiences” — namely: “messaging, sending and receiving photos and links, and receiving stickers”. Yes, stickers aren’t a nice-to-have in the hyper competitive world of mobile messaging.

Facebook says Messenger Lite for Android is starting to roll out, initially to Kenya, Tunisia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Venezuela — with other countries slated to be added in the “coming months”.

Facebook roll out Messenger "Secret Conversations" end-to-end encrypted that can also self destruct

You probably don’t want Facebook snooping on your private conversations, so may have steered clear of Messenger previously, but the good news is the social network now lets you send private messages to friends which can only be read on the device of the person you're communicating with -- and not by Facebook itself.

Facebook Secret Conversations started being tested on a limited basis three months ago, but is now available to most users.

It lets you create end-to-end encrypted one-to-one secret conversations though the Messenger app for Android and iOS (not through Facebook on the web), and you can currently send text, photos and stickers. You can also set a timer to have your messages disappear from the conversation.

It’s very easy to send a secret message, just follow these steps:

  1. From the  tab, tap
  2. Tap Secret in the top right
  3. Select who you want to message
  4. If you want, tap "timer icon"  in the text box and set a timer to make the messages disappear after seen.
Or

1. Select one on your contact list and create a message

2. Tap on (!) icon

3. Tap the Secret Conversation

4. Now compose a message and if you want it to self destruct of disappear  Tap the (timer icon)  and set your time..

Secret conversations are currently only available in the Messenger app on iOS and Android, so they won't appear on Facebook chat or messenger.com. They're also only visible on the device where you create the conversation and the device the recipient uses to open the conversation.

Watch a sample video how it works:

Germany and India Bans Facebook From Collecting WhatsApp Data

A month ago, the most popular messaging app WhatsApp updated its privacy policy and T&Cs to start sharing its user data with its parent company, and now both the companies are in trouble, at least in Germany and India.

The Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information Johannes Caspar even ordered Facebook on Tuesday to delete all data that has already been forwarded to WhatsApp since August. Both Facebook, as well as WhatsApp, have been told to immediately stop collecting and storing data on roughly 35 Million WhatsApp users in Germany.

Also in India, the Delhi High Court on September 23 ordered WhatsApp to delete all users’ data from its servers up until September 25 when the company’s new privacy policy came into effect. When Facebook first acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion in cash in 2014, WhatsApp made a promise that its users’ data would not be shared between both companies.

But now apparently this has changed, which, according to Caspar, is not only "misleading" for their users and public, but also "constitutes an infringement of national data protection law" in Germany.

"Such an exchange is only admissible if both companies, the one that provides the data (WhatsApp) as well as the receiving company (Facebook) have established a legal basis for doing so." the press release [PDF] from the Commission reads.

"Facebook, however, neither has obtained an effective approval from the WhatsApp users nor does a legal basis for the data reception exist."

In response to the privacy watchdog’s decision, Facebook released a statement that it complied with EU data protection law, saying: "We are open to working with the Hamburg DPA in an effort to address their questions and resolve any concerns."

According to the watchdog, since Facebook and WhatsApp are independent companies, they should process their users' data based on their own terms and conditions as well as data privacy policies.

Edward Snowden Tweeted ‘Don’t use Google Allo'

Edward Snowden has warned people not to use Google’s new chat app, because it lets the company read everything that they say.

Google has finally released its new chat app after showing it off over the summer. It comes with a robot that watches everything people say and then stores it for later analysis, using that data to improve the app itself.

But that also means that chats are stored on Google’s servers indefinitely, and are able to be read by it. The company had initially indicated that the messages would only be stored temporarily, limiting the possible impact of any data breach and retaining some privacy for users.

But it now appears that Google won’t be doing that after all. Instead it will keep hold of all conversations.

Google will use that data to improve parts of the app, such as its smart replies feature. That will allow the app to read through conversations and try and work out how people talk – it can then use that data to suggest what they might want to say to their friends.

Google does allow people to switch into a different mode, called Incognito, where conversations will be end-to-end encrypted so that they can’t be read by Google. But that isn’t turned on by default and leads most of the app’s features to break, turning it into just a conventional chat app.

Making the change does probably keep Google on the right side of the law. By keeping track of all messages, Allo conversations will be accessible by law enforcement with warrants – something that can’t happen on apps like iMessage or WhatsApp, both of which have run into trouble over not being able to give up information to authorities.

All of those problems led Mr Snowden to send out a flurry of tweets telling people not to use Allo.

“Free for download today: Google Mail, Google Maps, and Google Surveillance,” he wrote. “That's #Allo. Don't use Allo.”

Snow then also reply a tweeted question of what message service should used.. he answered "Use Tor. Use Signal."

Yahoo launches its new Messenger app for desktops

The internet pioneer has released its long-in-development redesign of Yahoo Messenger for the desktop, giving the software both a much fresher look and a handful of big new features that you don't always see in personal chat clients.

You can unsend messages, for example -- good for those overly hasty reactions or correcting mistakes. You can also search for GIF replies (much like you might in Slack), like posts and share numerous photos at once just by dragging them into the conversation.

Want to share photos from your latest vacation or simply spice up a message? Save precious time with our drag and drop feature to share multiple photos at once. Then, spread the love by “liking” any posts or images that stand out to you. If you’d rather reply with a GIF, you can easily search and send GIFs to your heart’s content. Pro tip: play GIF roulette and type /gif + any search term.

With Messenger’s desktop notifications, you can multitask at your computer without having to worry about missing an important message from family, friends, or coworkers again.

Both Mac and Windows users can download the new app today. And if you depend on an official, native messaging app on your PC, you'll want to get it quickly. By August 5 as the legacy Yahoo Messenger app will no longer function as we move forward!, so you won't have much choice but to embrace modernity (or at least, find a third-party client) in the days ahead.

You can download  here!

Facebook Messenger will begin to offer an end-to-end encryption feature

Facebook Messenger will begin to offer an end-to-end encryption feature to a limited test group of users today. It’s a security option that’s been a long time coming for Facebook, which has considered making end-to-end encryption available for several months. The so-called “secret conversations” debuted today will be only visible to the sender and the reader, which means Facebook can’t enable some of the chatbot and payment features that are normally a part of the Messenger experience. However, end-to-end encryption boxes out law enforcement and even Facebook itself from reading users’ chats, ensuring that their conversations remain private.

‘Secret conversations’ offers users to send encrypted messages which can only be seen by the recipient for a limited time.

Messenger has also taken steps to make sure that chats remain secure, even if a user’s device gets lost or stolen. In secret conversations, Messenger will allow users to set an expiration date for a message so that it won’t be visible in the conversation forever. Once the time runs out, the message will vanish from the devices of all users in the conversation. Facebook released technical details about its implementation of secret conversations in a white paper (PDF).

Secret conversation mode will only be available on iOS and Android, not in Messenger.com, Facebook chat, or the desktop Messenger app — at least for now. Facebook’s vice president of messaging products David Marcus told TechCrunch that the addition of end-to-end encryption is intended to help Messenger become everyone’s go-to app.

“We wanted to make Messenger your primary messaging platform, and while we currently were already using a lot of security to ensure that your messages are safe and confidential, we felt that we needed to go one more extra step with this new mode,” Marcus explained. The combination of end-to-end encryption and a message countdown clock “will truly empower people to have any type of conversation they want to on Messenger,” he added.

Secret conversations will bring stronger security to some of Messenger’s nearly 1 billion users — but only if they turn it on.

Consumer demand for strong encryption is driving Facebook, Google, Apple and other companies to reassure users that their communications are secure. “It’s a really good time to do this,” Marcus said. “We felt this was the right time to do it, to complete the capabilities with something that enabled people to have the conversations they wanted to have on Messenger.”

R.I.P to the old legacy Yahoo Messenger on August 5th

After more than 18 years of service, faithfully shuttling your messages, emojis and A/S/L requests back and forth across the internet, Yahoo has announced they will be signing off and closing its old Messenger app for good on August 5th. The app launched in 1998 under the incredibly dated name "Yahoo Pager," but is heading off into the software sunset after the company introduced a more modern version last year.

About four (4) Years ago Yahoo! have decided to discontinue several Yahoo! product features.

Yahoo! Messenger Public Chat Rooms - The Yahoo! Messenger Public Chat Rooms will close down on December 14, 2012.
Yahoo! Messenger Pingbox - As of December 14, 2012, Pingbox will no longer be available on Yahoo! Messenger. If you’ve installed Pingbox on your blog or social networks.

As VentureBeat points out, the old Messenger was popular with users in the Asia-Pacific region, and according to Bloomberg, the old Yahoo Messenger actually still had a weirdly strong following among oil traders who used the app to bid and gossip on commodities prices. Apparently those two groups aren't enough to keep supporting such a dinosaur of an app. In a blog post, Yahoo explained the shut down:

While today we provide basic interoperation between the legacy product and the new Messenger, we encourage all of our users to complete their transition to the new Yahoo Messenger as we will no longer support the legacy platform as of August 5, 2016. We intend to continue our focused efforts on the new Messenger, with a goal of delivering the best experience to our users.

After August 5th, anyone still using the legacy Messenger will no longer be able to log in or send messages. Same goes for messages sent through third-party apps built on top of Yahoo's API. The new Messenger, however, is still available on the App Store and Google Play.

Meet Firefox Hello, the easiest way to connect for free over video with anyone, anywhere

You can now make free video and voice calls directly from your Web browser without having to set up an account, thanks to Mozilla.

The browser maker introduced Firefox 35, which includes the new Hello video-calling feature first introduced in beta this past October. You'll see the new Hello icon in the menu bar and in the customization panel; simply click the button labeled "Start a conversation" to begin chatting with someone.

When you start a conversation, a new window will open showing a self-view until the other person clicks the link to join you. While you're waiting for the other person to pick up the call, you can navigate away from the video chat window to a different website, and Hello will notify you when your friend has joined the room.

Each conversation will use a unique URL, and you can create multiple conversations and name them for different occasions. Mozilla said this should make it easier to go back to the people you speak to regularly without having to create a new link each time.

"This can all be done without the need for setting up an account or giving up any of your personal information," the Mozilla team wrote in a blog post Tuesday. "You might label one conversation '121' for your weekly check-in with a co-worker and another 'Family time' for your regular family catch-up. Your saved conversations will always be there when you need them."

The person on the other end of the line doesn't even have to be using Firefox. The service lets you connect with those using Chrome and Opera as well.

You can also sign in with a Firefox account so contacts will know you're online, and import additional contacts to your Hello address book from Google. To do so, select "Import Contacts" from the address book then sign into your Google account to give permission.

Mozilla has been developing Hello with Spanish telecom giant Telefónica, and said it's just getting started. "As we look to expand Firefox Hello into a comprehensive tool for communicating over the Web, we'll be testing new features like screen sharing and online collaboration so people can be more productive and get the most out of their video calls," the team wrote.

Microsoft’s MSN Messenger,is shutting down after 15 years

Microsoft’s MSN Messenger, or Windows Live Messenger as it’s now known, will be fully retired on October 31st. The software maker originally announced its plans to shift users over to Skype last year, but Microsoft kept the service running in China. After October 31st Chinese Messenger users will need to use Skype, bringing an end to 15 years of the service.

MSN Messenger started off life in 1999 as a rival to AOL’s AIM service. Both companies battled over chat dominance, and Microsoft engineers reverse-engineered AOL's chat protocol to allow MSN Messenger to sign into AIM, a process that AOL wasn't happy with when Microsoft first released its instant messaging client. Over the years Microsoft added various features, including custom emoticons, the ability to play Minesweeper with friends, a nudge feature that would shake a friends chat window, and the super annoying winks option to send friends giant animated emoticons.

MSN Messenger

Microsoft has typically celebrated its MSN Messenger milestones with big green mascot outfits, but the 15-year mark and the end of the Messenger era is departing quietly. Here’s a look back at how MSN Messenger used to look, during a time when everyone put emoticons in their name or status message, and your mom picking up the phone and killing your modem connection to MSN Messenger was just as annoying as someone using the same font and color as you during a conversation. Farewell, MSN Messenger.

Discontinued Yahoo Messenger Features

Here at Yahoo!, we aspire to make the world’s daily habits inspiring and entertaining. More than ever, we’re focused on building products that are beautiful and meaningful for our users. Sometimes, this means we have to make tough decisions — like closing down features that we feel aren’t adding enough value for you. This helps us spend more energy on creating experiences that make Yahoo! the most fun way to spend your time.
With this in mind, we have decided to discontinue several Yahoo! product features. This will enable us to refocus our efforts on modernizing our core Yahoo! products experiences and of course, create new ones. You can find more details below, including how the closures will work.

Yahoo! Messenger Public Chat Rooms
The Yahoo! Messenger Public Chat Rooms will close down on December 14, 2012.

Yahoo! Messenger Pingbox
As of December 14, 2012, Pingbox will no longer be available on Yahoo! Messenger. If you’ve installed Pingbox on your blog or social networks, please click here to learn how to uninstall it.

Yahoo! Messenger interoperability with Microsoft Windows Live Messenger
Yahoo! Messenger will no longer be interoperable with Microsoft Windows Live Messenger as of December 14, 2012. Microsoft buddies will still appear on your Messenger contact list, but they will be greyed out, and if you try to send instant messages to them, the messages will not be delivered.

Yahoo! Voice Phone In and Phone Out feature
Effective January 30, 2013, we will no longer offer Yahoo! Voice Phone In and Phone Out capabilities, our co-branded landline and mobile phone service from Jajah. As of today, users can no longer add new funds to their accounts, and active users who currently have a balance in their accounts will receive emailed instructions in December from Jajah on how to request a refund. You can find more information on how to ask for a refund here, and you can contact Jajah with any questions at yahoovoice@jajah.com. Free Messenger-to-Messenger calls will still be offered through Yahoo! Messenger.
Thank you to everyone who have used these features. We plan to keep innovating and building great Yahoo! products that will delight our users in the years to come.

This is not a joke
