How to fix The Windows Security Center service can’t be started error message in Windows

If you receive a "The Windows Security Center service can’t be started" error message in Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7 or Windows Vista, then this article may be able to help you troubleshoot the problem. You may try these troubleshooting steps in any order.

Action Center, previously known as Windows Security Center, monitors the security status of the computer. However the related service is called Security Center service. The Security Center (WSCSVC) Service monitors and reports security health settings on the computer.

The Windows Security Center uses the Windows Management Instrumentation or WMI collect information about the PC. If there are some inconsistencies, the Security Center may fail to start.

What cause this? May be you have downloaded a program with virus, Trojan, rat, or malware or you turned it off.

The Windows Security Center service can’t be started

1) First of all, deep-scan your PC with your security software. This is to ensure that, it is not some malware, which is preventing your Security Center from running.

2) Disable and then enable Security Center and see if it helps.

3) If your Security Center is disabled, open Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Action Center and see if you can restart the Windows Security Service by clicking on the Turn on now button.

4) If this does not help or you receive another error, right click any where on your task bar click Task Manager ( or run task manager)

Click the "Services" tab menu , then click "Open Services"

Look for " Security Center" (you can see it was Disabled) then right click it select properties.

Set on Automatic or Automatic (Delayed Start). Also ensure that the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and Windows Management Instrumentation services are started and set on Automatic.

How to repair Windows MBR or master boot record and fix your bricked PC

The master boot record is a key part of your PC’s startup system. It contains information about the computer’s disk partitions and helps load the operating system. Without a properly functioning MBR, your PC simply won’t work.

New form of ransomware is wreaking havoc on computers. Hackers that encrypt your files and demand money from you in the form of bitcoin is bad enough, but a few versions also overwrite your Windows PC’s master boot record (MBR).

Luckily, destroying the MBR usually isn’t irreversible. But it’s still problematic since overwriting the MBR renders your PC inoperative until it’s repaired. On top of that, the method for fixing it is far from obvious.

Here’s how to make everything right if your master boot record was erased.

How to fix the MBR

The main way to fix the MBR is to use a command prompt and run the bootrec.exe command. In versions of Windows prior to Windows 8 and 10, you usually accessed the command prompt through recovery media like a DVD disc or USB drive. That still works in Windows 10, and we’ll discuss that method at the end of this tutorial. But the latest versions of Windows offer an easier method for running recovery commands without external media.

When you first boot up a Windows 10 PC it should recognize that there’s a problem and enter “automatic repair” mode. When it does, you’ll see the words "Preparing Automatic Repair” appear below the blue Windows logo.

If that doesn’t happen, but you do see the blue Windows logo, turn off your computer using the hard reset/power button. Keep turning the computer on and off until you see your PC booting into automatic repair. It should only take a few reboots.

Once automatic repair mode is ready, you’ll see the Automatic Repair screen. From here select Advanced options.

On the next screen, click Command Prompt Troubleshoot and then Advanced options once again.

You’ll see a screen with six options. If you want, you can select Startup Repair before turning to the command prompt and Bootrec. Startup Repair is an automated program that will try to fix any problems it finds on the computer disk without any intervention from the user.

It’s a good utility that may fix your problem, but Startup Repair will take far more time to complete its task than simply running Bootrec.

To use the Bootrec option, click the Command Prompt tile. This may prompt your computer to reboot yet again and then ask you to login with your password. If that happens, do so.

Once the command line appears, all you have to do is type the following, then press Enter:

bootrec.exe /fixmbr

Note the space between “exe” and “/fixmbr”—it’s critical to include this space for the command to run properly. The first part tells the PC to run the Bootrec program, while the “/fixmbr” option tells Bootrec exactly what we want it to recover.

If all goes well, the command prompt should print out, “The operation completed successfully.” When you see that you can reboot your PC.

Bootrec from a system repair drive

If you’re running an older version of Windows, or if your Windows 10 PC isn’t launching the repair options, you’ll need to use a recovery drive to fix your MBR. Start by inserting the system repair media into the PC. This will be either one you created, or a purchased version of the Windows install discs.

Next, boot your system. If you’re using a USB drive, your system’s BIOS needs to be set to boot from USB before falling back to any internal drives. If you don’t have your BIOS correctly configured, the system recovery drive will be of no use. Adding to the complication, the way you enter the BIOS (and how you set it up) is not universal. Lincoln Spector has a tutorial on how to handle setting up your BIOS to boot from USB.

Once you’ve booted into the recovery drive, you should be asked to select a keyboard layout in your language—US English in this case. Next, you’ll land on the troubleshooting screen we saw earlier.

At this point you can continue to the command prompt as we discussed earlier and run Bootrec.

If you’re on Windows 7, you’ll need to follow slightly different steps once you launch into the recovery mode. After you’ve selected the input method, select Repair your computer, followed by the operating system name. Then click Next > System Recovery Options > Command Prompt and start Bootrec using the same bootrec.exe /fixmbr as above

Windows 10 Anniversary Update has broken some third-party USB cameras

Microsoft is facing complains from consumers and businesses about Windows 10 Anniversary Update, released on August 2nd, reportedly dropped support for two major video compression formats — specifically the H.264 and MJPEG codecs. According to Microsoft-focused blog Thurrott.com, this was supposedly a decision the company made to prevent performance issues now that certain Windows apps have more direct webcam access post-update.

Now, millions of Windows users are discovering that their webcams are freezing up, even when trying to stream via Microsoft-owned Skype. The issue is said to effect many popular webcams from big-name peripheral makers like Logitech on the hardware side, while numerous apps and services that rely on the codecs are being crippled from the software side.

Members of Microsoft’s Windows Camera team are performing damage control in support threads, and Thurrott.com reports an official fix may be in the works for a September release. Unfortunately, that may only remedy the MJPEG format. Those who rely on H.264 may be waiting even longer to make use of their webcams. If you recently installed the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, you can revert to the prior version of the software within 10 days.

Thurrott.com contributor Rafael Rivera devised a workaround that appears to be resolving the webcam freezing issues so long as you're okay with making changes to the Windows Registry:

The hack is pretty simple; you just need to stick to the following instructions.
  1. Go to the Start Menu, type "regedit" and press Enter. This opens 'The Registry Editor'.
  2. Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Media Foundation\Platform" in the left sidebar.
  3. Right-click the "Platform" key and select New → DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  4. Name this value "EnableFrameServerMode" and set the value to "0" by double clicking on it.

These are the steps if you are using a 32-bit version of Windows 10.
If you are using a 64-bit version of Windows 10, you will need to navigate to

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows Media Foundation\Platform"

in the left sidebar and follow step 3 and 4 mentioned above

How To Calibrate Android Device Battery Stats ( Root/No Root)

What this procedure achieves is to rest the battery stats file so your battery should now be calibrated.
Battery problems are among the biggest concerns for smartphone users, which is why we offer so many useful tips for solving battery drain issues. If you notice that your battery performance and duration has decreased, it could be time to calibrate your battery. Today we'll explain what battery calibration is, how to tell if you need to do it and how to do it, with or without root access.

The Android operating system has a feature called Battery Stats, which keeps track of battery capacity, when it is full or empty. The problem is that it sometimes becomes corrupted and starts displaying data that isn’t real, which, for example, causes the phone to turn off before it reaches 0 percent. Calibrating your Android battery simply means getting the Android OS to correct this information so it is reflective of your actual battery levels once again.

How to calibrate an Android device battery without root access

The old 'fully charge and discharge' approach stands as one of the simplest ways to 'recalibrate' your Android battery. We've warned you in the past about low voltage problems in lithium batteries and the negative impacts of fully draining a battery on its lifespan and the same holds true here. But if your phone battery is causing you real problems, it's worth taking the risk.

Just follow the steps below:

  • Let your phone discharge until it goes off due to low battery.

  • Charger your battery until it reach 100%. Do not turn on your device while charging!.

  • Unplug your charger and turn your phone on.

  • Leave it lying for 30 minutes then charge it again for an hour. Don't use your device while it is plugged in.

  • Unplug your device and use normally until the battery is completely drained again.

  • Then charge it to 100% again.

How to calibrate Android device battery with root access

Even though I'm not convinced that clearing the batterystats.bin file has any meaningful effect on how the Android system reports remaining battery charge, there are those who swear by this method.

So in the interests of fairness, we've included the process for you here (it is true that different manufacturers use the batterystats.bin file for different things). It's basically the same process as above but with the added step of a root-enabled app.

1. Discharge your phone fully until it turns itself off.

2. Turn it on and let it turn off again.

3. Plug your phone into a charger and, without turning it on, let it charge until the on-screen or LED indicator says 100 percent.

4. Unplug your charger.

5. Turn your phone on. It's likely that the battery indicator won't say 100 percent, so plug the charger back in (leave your phone on) and continue charging until it says 100 percent on the screen as well.

6. Unplug your phone and restart it. If it doesn't say 100 percent, plug the charger back in until it says 100 percent on screen.

7. You want to repeat this cycle until it says 100 percent (or as close as you think it's going to get) when you start it up without being plugged in.

8. Now, install the Battery Calibration app and, before you launch it, make sure your battery is at 100 percent again, then restart.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nema.batterycalibration&referrer=utm_source%3DAndroidPIT%26utm_medium%3DAndroidPIT%26utm_campaign%3DAndroidPIT

9. Immediately launch the app and recalibrate your battery.

10. Once you've calibrated your battery, discharge it all the way down to 0 percent and let your phone turn off again.

11. Fully charge the battery one more time without interruption while it's switched off, and the Android system's battery percentage will be reset.

Remember that it is not recommended to perform this process all the time. Even when your battery is so dead your phone won't even turn on, your battery still has enough reserve charge to avoid system damage. But you don't want to poke the tiger with a stick. Perform this process once every three months at the most. If it is required more often than that you have bigger problems at hand.

Smartphone battery myths

Lithium-ion batteries don't have a memory so there's not much you need to do to keep them running as they should. The problem lies with how the Android system reads and displays the current capacity of the battery, not the battery itself.

The same goes for the myth that deleting the batterystats.bin file will magically recalibrate your battery. That file (on most devices anyway) simply stores data about what is using the battery when it is not being charged. It is also reset every time a battery is charged to over 80 percent and then disconnected.

The batterystats.bin file contains the info you see made prettier in the Battery section of your phone: it's the Android system keeping track of your battery's usage, per charge cycle. When we talk about battery calibration, it's the percentage meter that gets out of whack, and that is what we need to fix.

Conclusion:
Put plainly: fully discharging a battery is bad for it. Trying to overload a battery is also bad for it. The good news is that charging batteries automatically shut off when their safe limit is reached and there's always a little in reserve even if your phone won't start. But again: do this only when really necessary, because it does have a negative impact on battery life.

Tutorial How to Stop Google Chrome from Running in the Background

Google Chrome  have been sapping up system resources leading to performance issues. People with low-end devices have to think twice before opening a new Chrome tab. This is a big problem while Chrome is running, and it seems Chrome keeps haunting us even when it is closed.

Chrome's battery drain problem was brought to wider attention by Forbes contributor Ian Morris, who noticed that Chrome for Windows was using considerably more power than other browsers.

The issue, he wrote, is that Chrome doesn't return the system's processor to an idle state when it's not doing anything. Instead, Chrome sets a high “system clock tick rate” of 1 millisecond, and leaves it at that rate, even if the browser's just running the background

By default Chrome allows applications/extensions to keep running in the background to provide their services like updates and notifications. This is handy for keeping you updated with notifications on Facebook or a new email in Gmail. However, it eats up system resources even when you don’t want to be updated. In this post we will show you how you can stop Chrome from running background apps.

Before we stop this background service of Chrome, it is good to know both the good and bad sides to make a wise decision.

The Good
When you install an extension or use a web service that provides continuous updates, they may be capable of running in the background to offer notifications even when Chrome is closed. This allows you to always be updated and to take action right from the Chrome notifications. It’s really handy actually, and if you don’t want to leave your online life behind when you hit the close button, it does a great job of keeping you updated with important stuff. Turning this feature off means you will not be able to get updates on your PC and may lose important notifications.

The Bad
While Chrome is running in the background, it is using system resources and slowing down the system. For example, if you exit Chrome to get some resources to play a heavy video game, this little background service will get in your way and may not let you have the best experience. Furthermore, constant notifications may also be annoying for some people, especially if you are very active on social media platforms. Some people also want to completely leave their online life behind when they press the close button on Chrome, but this will keep bugging them even when Chrome is closed.
Disable Apps from Running in the Background

You can stop Chrome from running in the background from the Chrome settings. Below are step-by-step instructions.

1. Click on Chrome’s main menu and select “Settings.”

2. Scroll down and click on “Show advanced settings.”

3. Scroll down to the extreme bottom and uncheck the option “Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed” under the “System” heading.

This will stop Chrome from running any apps in the background and will exit properly when you click on the close button. At any time later if you want to receive notifications, just go to “Settings” again and enable this feature.

If you are tired of Chrome eating up resources in the background, then you can follow the above instructions to easily stop Chrome from running in the background. If there is a particular notification that is bugging you, then turning this feature off completely isn’t necessary. You can also disable the extension or disable “desktop notifications” in the settings of the service.
