Radioactive Tritium Flashlight Runs for 20 Years Without a Battery

A Multi-Functional Tritium Lantern (MFTL) that triples as a miniature flashlight, a bottle opener, and a small pry tool. Oh! And it’s a keychain, so you’re likely to have it with you at all times or at least when you’re out of the house.
The gadget, designed by an Athens, Greece-based maker and prophet of what he refers to as the “Next Industrial Revolution”–3D printing or additive manufacturing–is digitally designed and then 3D printed in stainless steel (420 stainless steel alloy with infused bronze–40%). It’s about the width of a cigarette, although a bit shorter. The designer, who’sEtsy Shop, InnovoDesign, offers the pieces for $63.58 each, says he most enjoys creating “functional, innovative, unique objects and artifacts.” We agree that there’s something kind of retro and mysterious about this gadget. The texture of the stainless steel and the shape of the object are evocative of the Art Deco style.
Tritium–symbol T or 3H as it is also known as hydrogen-3–is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen. It’s not cheap; the market price for a gram of tritium is $30,000, which is why the InnovoDesign MFTL gadget costs just under $65. We think they’re definitely worth it. Those hermetically-sealed vials are amazing little light sources thanks to the gaseous tritium isotope. It glows without requiring a light “charge,” as is the case with most phosphorescent, glow-in-the-dark products. During the day and in well-lit spaces, you won’t see the flow. In low- or no-light settings, however, the gadget will basically be your tiny lantern. As its creator boasts, it’s a genuinely, “nuclear-powered gadget.” Speaking of which, it occurs to us that the thing resembles a tiny submarine–a nuclear sub.

The real treat, however, is the gadget’s unique feature: It glows in the dark. After its creator receives the 3D-printed objects from Shapeways (as he doesn’t print them himself), he embeds each piece with non-removable tritium isotope, with 3×22.5mm in a vial for each.

The vial itself is resin and, since it is carefully embedded within the stainless steel body, it is not easily removed or broken, so you needn’t worry about leaks. You can choose what color your gadget will glow from eight different color choices. InnovoDesign also offers a larger tritium light, a “beacon,” which triples the glow of the smaller bottle opener-pry tool-flashlight. Our favorite piece in the Etsy shop may well be the Tritium Overlord Ring, which is 3D printed in silver and glows a satisfying, sci-fi blue. It sells for $219.95, which is an altogether reasonable price.

Update: limited stock

I got my vial in 7 days  from Greece.

They Also have other available Design  to choose..

Update: InnovoDesign is no longer active on etsy  you can buy on his own webstore @  http://www.byinnovodesign.com/

HTML5 video is the default on YouTube No more Flash and Crash Browser

YouTube defaults to using HTML5 video on all modern browsers, including Chrome, IE 11, Safari 8 and the beta versions of Firefox. The same technology that powers adaptive bitrates also makes it possible for YouTube to live-stream video to the Chromecast and game consoles like the Xbox and PS4.

HTML5’s Encrypted Media Extensions have been somewhat controversial in the web standards community because they enable DRM support in web browsers. But as YouTube engineering manager Richard Leider notes in today’s announcement, support for this feature now enables the service to use a single video player across a wide range of platforms.

“Combined with Common Encryption, we can support multiple content protection technologies on different platforms with a single set of assets, making YouTube play faster and smoother,” he writes.

Before

After

Now that HTML5 video is the default on YouTube, Google is deprecating its old-style <object> Flash embeds and its Flash API. YouTube recommends you only use its <iframe> embeds to embed videos going forward because that allows it to use whatever technology your visitors’ browsers support.

Some website already support this  example where I always watch anime is Kissanime.

By switching to HTML5, YouTube can now also make wider use of Google’s VP9 video codec. YouTube says this switch allows videos to start 15 to 80 percent faster and reduces the average bandwidth needed to stream a video by 35 percent. That may not seem like a big deal right now, but once you start streaming 4k video, that 35 percent reduction could be the difference between enjoying the video or staring at the “buffering” screen. YouTube started streaming VP9 videos in 2013 and has since served “hundreds of billions of VP9 videos.”

RANGE-R is a handheld sensor capable of sending Radar signals through the walls and locating people inside buildings.

RANGE-R is a handheld sensor capable of sending Radar signals through the walls and locating people inside buildings. It is powered by 4 AA batteries and weighs less than 1.5 lbs.

The basic RANGE-R concept of operations is shown in Figure 1. The sensor is held against the wall and activated via a pair of buttons (one hand operation). A series of Radar pulses is transmitted through the wall. The pulses are reflected from objects inside the structure. These returns are analyzed as Doppler radar returns, allowing detection of any moving objects in the structure.

The sensitivity of the RANGE-R is sufficient to detect people breathing, making it difficult for individuals to hide from RANGE-R. The range to a target is displayed on the user-friendly graphic display. RANGE-R covers a conical field of view of 160 degrees, sufficient to cover an entire room (or small building) in a single scan. The entire scan/detect sequence takes only a few seconds.

Doppler radar

RANGE-R uses a form of Radar known as Doppler Radar. In Doppler Radar, a radio frequency (RF) signal is transmitted, strikes a target and returns to an RF receiver. If the object is moving, the frequency of the signal is altered. With appropriate signal processing the amount of motion can be determined. Using this technique, RANGE-R determines the presence of moving objects inside a building and classifies them as “movers” (more movement) or “breathers” (less movement) while providing the range to the object on a small display.

RANGE-R uses a type of Doppler Radar known as Stepped Frequency Continuous Wave (SFCW) Radar, where specific frequencies are emitted in a controlled fashion. This approach makes RANGE-R inherently resistant to jamming or interference with other electronics. Additionally, RANGE-R is certified by the FCC to operate in an approved Radar band and therefore, will not interfere with most non-Radar electronic systems.

Wall Penetration

RANGE- R will penetrate most common building wall, ceiling or floor types including poured concrete, concrete block, brick, wood, stucco glass, adobe, dirt, etc. However, It will not penetrate metal. RANGE-R will generally penetrate up to one foot of wall thickness without adverse effects. While small metal objects embedded in walls (i.e. rebar, conduits, etc.) usually do not inhibit operation, a large enough metal object can impair operation. When this happens, the wisest course of action is to make more than one scan from different locations (move a few feet) for confirmation. If a porous wall is saturated with water, performance can also be degraded due to excessive absorption of the radar energy.

Conical Field of View

The RANGE-R has a conical, 160 degree field of view (FOV). This FOV provides complete coverage of a rectangular room with a single scan. This FOV covers +/- 80 degrees in azimuth AND elevation. This feature enables RANGE-R to penetrate ceilings/floor as well as vertical walls. A typical scan of a two-story house will detect people on the second floor as well as people on ground level.
