The New Google 5.0 Android L OS

Newer, tastier version of Google's OS Google shared glimpses of Android L  (Android 5.0) (the final name has yet to be confirmed) at its I/O event this year, and while there's still a lot left to discover, there's plenty to be excited about: The big news for Android L is the change to the way it looks - and it's going well beyond the mobile phone to the tablet, TV screen, watch and even the car.

The new Material Design is strange in that it bucks a trend at the moment - yes, it's flat, but it's heavily based on making every animation, every ripple, every shadow look real, which is something that most brands are shying away from.

Material Design is the name of Android L’s UI overhaul, and its primary aim is to kill clutter with a flat, minimalist interface and bright primary colours.

The Google+ app is the currently the easiest way to get a feel for Android's new design direction, and the new look will apply to both smartphone and tablet versions of Android L, and will also be a core feature of Android Wear.

Emphasis has also been placed on slick, flashy transitions, with the aim of seamlessly switching between connected apps.

The on-screen navigation buttons have been simplified to basic triangle, circle and square shapes, although Google has stressed that this may not be the final design.

What's New?

Smarter notifications For starters, its notification system has been overhauled, and is now even more useful.

Notifications can now drop in from the top, even when you're playing games, and you can choose to deal with them there and then, or wait until you've cracked the high score.

The new lock screen notifications have also been given a boost. The lock screen now  essentially replicated the drop-down notification menu, displaying all of your notifications as cards.

You can choose to dismiss them by swiping them away, or open them up to see more information.

Slicker multitasking -

Multitasking has also been given a boost, with an all-new 3D card-style view which lets you flick through different apps like a virtual rolodex.
Android L

Individual chrome tabs now have a dedicated card each. If you're in one app and open another directly from it (going from Gallery to Instagram for example), then the new app will also have its own tab.

It all makes clicking between webpages and apps a far more fluid experience, and it's a very welcome change.

We are however a little concerned about how messy all those cards will get during a heavy multitasking session. Something tells us that the current setup which shows of multiple open apps could be quicker. Time will tell.

It's safer

The lockscreen is getting smarter too - if you've got a specific location set up, or are wearing a Bluetooth device, the phone will recognise you and unlock without a PIN. Move away or take your watch off and you'll need to tap or swipe in a code when you unlock - or you can even use your voice.

Android L’s lock screen has also smartened up. It can now automatically unlock if it recognises that it’s in a secure situation.

It will, for example, remove the lock screen pattern or pin if it’s connected to your smartwatch. It can also bypass security measures in trusted locations like your house, for example.

It's faster

ART is now the default runtime in Android L. While that won’t mean a lot to most people, it essentially means that the engine running behind the scenes has been completely renewed.

Apps and animations will run at a much more fluid 60fps, and Android L now offers over twice the speed of its previous runtime, Dalvik. Impressive stuff.

Other tweaks include an improvement in graphics performance, and Google has worked with the likes of Nvidia and Qualcomm to further improve optimisations within their own processors.

More stamina
Android L will land with Project Volta - an app which focuses on improving battery life.
It offers in-depth battery life information at your fingertips, letting you pinpoint possible causes of battery drain.

This, coupled with various under-the-hood-optimisations, means that developers should be able to produce apps which are even more efficient and less power-hungry.

Android L also has a built-in battery saver mode, which presumably automatically reduces brightness and cranks down data connections and app syncing, in a similar fashion to battery saver modes found in the LG G3 and HTC One (M8).

Android Wear gets kicked up a Gear

We saw a lot more about Android Wear - and not only that, but we were introduced to Samsung's Gear Live, the third member of the new smartwatch game Google is trying to put together before Apple throws its hat into the ring.

Android Wear will use the same tools as on Android for phones and tablets, plus square and circular screens will be supported. Sensors will be well integrated for fitness and social interactions, and help reduce the need to check a phone screen. It's basically wearables like the Galaxy Gear 2, really.

Android TV now baked right in too
Android L is also going to support TV, with information overlaid across the top of the information. It's called Android TV, surprisingly, and after the failure of Google TV the brand is having another go, such was the popularity of the Chromecast.

This means you've got content (games, films, TV shows etc) straight on your big screen and has a home button to get you back to the main display whenever you want.

The dessert-themed code name that we assume will begin with L is anyone's guess at this stage. Android 5.0 Lemon Cheesecake or Android 5.0 Lemon Meringue Pie, anyone? Though there's talk that it might be called Android Lollipop or even Android Moonshine,

Update :  Android L 5.0 is officially called Lollipop

Facebook and Usenix Award $50,000 for two researchers from Ruhr-Universität Bochum in Germany

Facebook and Usenix have together implemented the Internet Defense Prize — an award recognizing superior quality research that combines a working prototype with great contributions to securing the Internet, Facebook announced Thursday at the annual USENIX Security Symposium in San Diego.
Along with a dream to make Internet access available to everyone across the world, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is working to make the Internet a more secure place as well.
Applying that model beyond Facebook, also helped create the Internet Bug Bounty to reward bugs found in open source software projects, contributed to initiatives like the Core Infrastructure Initiative that fund critical security software needs, and released open source software to help other developers incorporate security by default (Conceal, MIDAS)

The Internet Bug Bounty is hosted by HackerOne, which also includes other large companies such as Microsoft and Google. Which in some cases will pay $5,000 or more per vulnerability, is sponsored by Microsoft and Facebook. The program was unveiled Wednesday, and it builds off a growing number of similar initiatives. Last November 7 2013, Google announced rewards as high as $3,133.70 for software updates that improve the security of OpenSSL, OpenSSH, BIND, and several other open-source packages. Additionally, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, eBay, Mozilla, and several other software or service providers pay cash in return for private reports of security vulnerabilities that threaten their users.

Facebook announced the first award under its Internet Defense Prize, and crowned a pair of German researchers for their paper, “Static Detection of Second-Order Vulnerabilities in Web Applications” — a seemingly viable approach to detecting vulnerabilities in web applications.
The duo used static approach to detect “Second-order vulnerabilities” in web applications that are used to impose harm after being stored on the web server ahead of time. Second-order vulnerabilities involve uploading malicious script/payload to the targeted web servers, allowing an attacker to exploit it remotely.

Internet Defense Prize, an award to recognize superior quality research that combines a working prototype with significant contributions to the security of the Internet—particularly in the areas of protection and defense. To kick things off, we approached USENIX, an organization respected for their depth in the academic community and their commitment to meaningful security research. After receiving an enthusiastic response from USENIX, we assembled members of the Award Committee for the annual USENIX Security Symposium to join me in evaluating the submissions they received this year.

It is very difficult to detect Second-order vulnerabilities when analyzing the source code statically, but "By analysing reads and writes to memory locations of the web server, we are able to identify unsanitized data flows by connecting input and output points of data in persistent data stores such as databases or session data," said researchers, who revealed 159 second-order vulnerabilities in six popular web applications including several critical zero-day holes.

The researchers, Johannes Dahse and Thorsten Holz of Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany, received $50,000 prize money by an award committee made up of Facebook and USENIX representatives. The committee saw a "clear path" for using the money to build the research into technology that could be implemented in the real world.
The Internet Defense Prize is an ongoing program and the committee is soliciting new entries for a future prize, according to John “Four” Flynn, a security engineering manager at Facebook who served on the Award Committee for the Internet Defense Prize.

A thousand-robot execute the ultimate nerd choreography

A thousand-robot swarm created by Harvard researchers can self-assemble into different shapes. The entire demonstration makes it a bit too easy to forget that humans, researchers at Harvard University, provided the algorithms that allowed them to accomplish various formations. And yet, these machines — tiny $20 robots that take five minutes each to assemble, for a total of 83 hours — are actually completely banal. In fact, according to the researchers, their capabilities are pretty abysmal.

Michael Rubenstein, an electrical engineer at Harvard University is the lead researcher of a project aimed at creating a "thousand-robot swarm" — a collection of machines that he said is "probably the biggest group of decentralized robots working together to complete a complex global task."

Because the robots were so limited, however, the biggest challenge wasn’t the time necessary to build them, but coming up with an algorithm capable of governing the robot formations accurately. "We are partially motivated by swarms found in nature, including flocks of birds, groups of cells, and swarms of army ants — all working together to accomplish something bigger than any of the individuals can."

For now, the goal of the project seems to programming the swarm itself, rather than making it perform a task that might benefit humans. Eventually, the researchers may try to create larger swarms with smaller robots, which Rubenstein said will help them understand "how to control them even as the robots become less capable." And to add an additional layer of difficulty, he said, their next attempts will include robots that can attach to each other.

Microsoft first Chromebook the HP Stream

The Stream 14 sounds like an interesting device, and with such an aggressive price it will probably sell quite well. But the big question with the Stream 14 will be how well it runs Windows. Low-end PCs are notorious for being deathly slow, although the onboard storage should help the Stream 14 run faster than hard drive-encumbered netbooks from five years ago.

But if the Stream can't run Windows without stuttering, it will leave users unhappy. Chrome OS, by comparison, was designed to boot quickly. And thanks to the fact that it's little more than the Linux Kernel, a browser, and some drivers, Chrome OS runs very well on low-buck hardware.

In mid-July, Microsoft announced its uber-cheap line of Windows 8.1 notebooks, with the cheapest model from HP, called “the Stream,” costing just $199. With such a cheap price point, Microsoft is taking aim at Google’s line of super-cheap Chromebooks, which also start at $199.

Microsoft and HP didn’t show off the Stream notebook when it was announced in July, but thanks to some sleuthing from German site Mobile Geeks and Liliputing,

The HP Stream 14 is a 14-inch, Windows 8.1 computer that is expected to sell for a paltry $199.
The Stream 14 and Chromebook 14 share many of the same specs, including the same number of ports, same 2GB of RAM, and same 14-inch display with a 1,366x768 resolution. But the Stream 14 comes with a more powerful quad-core 1.6 GHz system-on-a-chip from AMD, compared to the 1.4GHz Intel Celeron processor that powers HP’s Chromebook 14.

The Stream also reportedly will also boast more onboard storage: Compared to the Chromebook 14’s 16GB of storage, the Stream will offer 32GB and 64GB options.

Microsoft will be throwing in 100GB of OneDrive storage for two years with the purchase of the Stream 14, which is very similar to the 100GB of Google Drive storage that comes with every Chromebook purchase.

Chromebook Boots in seconds also have an advantage over Windows in terms of security thanks to process sandboxing, verified boot checks, and the Web security features built into Chrome itself. You never have to worry about security on a Chromebook—no AV programs needed, no monthly hard drive scans. Windows, although it also does a hardware check at boot, still requires some kind of antivirus and malware protection. Whether you choose the built-in Windows Defender or a third-party solution, you'll still be dealing with at least a small performance hit on an already limited machine, as the AV solution will eat into the Stream's limited RAM and storage, not to mention the potential tax on the low-end AMD processor.

And when it comes to updates, you can't beat automatic updating on Chromebooks that upgrades your system in the background and never interrupts the user, even at boot. Every time you power on a Chromebook, you're ready to use it in mere seconds. Compare that to Microsoft's Patch Tuesday system that nearly always requires a restart and a few minutes of automated "configuration" after the reboot.

A Windows desktop does have its advantages over a Chromebook since you can run legacy desktop software, which Chromebooks can't do. But with 32GB of onboard storage in the $200 HP Stream, there's not a ton of room for Windows, third-party software, and any files you want to keep locally instead of in the cloud, such as media files.

There's no clear release date for the Stream 14 yet, though it will likely be available soon. And it also won't be alone, we expect to see numerous ultra-cheap laptops from Microsoft before the year's out. Buckle up, the race to the bottom is hitting full steam.

Criminals Use 3D-printed Skimming Devices on ATMs Are For Sale Online

MANILA, Philippines – A retired policewoman has sought the help of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Cybercrime Division after she reportedly lost all her retirement fund amounting to almost P400,000 to ATM skimmers.

The victim, identified as Chief Inspector Anita Araullo who  used to work as chief of the Women’s Desk of the Manila Police District, told the NBI all her life savings for the entire 31 years of service were emptied in mysterious series of  transactions she found out has started a few years back.

For one day alone in August 2012, Araullo told investigators, she lost P100,000 in 10 consecutive transactions, despite having a daily maximum withdrawal limit.

ATM skimming is done by copying one’s ATM card data using a concealed device attached to the machine unknown to the users. Like any good technology, it was only a matter of time until 3D printing was exploited by criminals.  If you see one of these devices attached to an ATM, call the police.  Since the devices typically operate via wi-fi, the criminals are probably nearby with Laptop.

Although the linked article states the best way to deal with this kind of problem is to cover the keypad, that's not really true.  There are types of keypad skimmers that fit over the top of the existing keypad and look just like the normal one.  These can be practically impossible for the average person to detect, just like many of the fake card readers that fit over the top of the real card reader.  You can cover up the keypad as best as you can, but that won't help if there is a fake keypad affixed to the top of the real one.

Araullo said she only found out lately that her account was drained of her savings because she never checked, believing the money was safe with her bank. Her daughter has kept the card, but it was already too late when they discovered the anomalous transactions.

The retired policewoman then reported the matter to the Central Bank, but it was not immediately known whether they can still recover the lost money.

The NBI is conducting an investigation into the incident, but has advised the public to be extra careful about withdrawing cash from ATMs in order not to suffer the same fate as the poor victim.

According to NBI, to avoid falling prey to this notorious ATM scammers, one should choose to withdraw from machines in crowded areas like malls where it is difficult for fraudsters to install the skimming device.

Secondly, it is advised to regularly check your accounts to monitor transactions. Anyone withdrawing from ATM must also be aware of the people around, especially those behind in queues who may only be trying to get the opportunity to peep while the user is punching the PIN on the machine.

A reasonable distance must also be maintained between the user on the machine and the one next in line. The bank must also be informed immediately should there be any suspicious transactions observed.

The NBI also encourages cardholders to register or apply for a bank scheme that sends messaging alerts when withdrawals above the limit are done.

I found the problem that  the Google Download Manager extension (add-on ) Don't know if it makes sense is not showing what kind of format you want to download. It only shows separate audio track and video track  only  see image below.

However, I tried with Firefox's add-on  Download Manager  Helper ( IDM ), and it saved the file as .MP4 , FLV , 3GP and it opened successfully.
