PlayBook 4 and Xbook One- laptop versions of Sony and Microsoft’s latest consoles

Consoles aren’t the most portable things in the world but Ed Zarick looks to be changing that by showing off and selling the PlayBook 4 and Xbook One- laptop versions of Sony and Microsoft’s latest consoles. However, you’ll need to have a wedge of disposable income in order to afford one as they both cost close to £1000/$1500.
Zarick is a self-taught engineer who was also responsible for previously creating a portable Xbox 360, the Xbook 360. Last month, he began selling the Xbook One, featuring a 22 Inch Vizio 1080p LED TV and the console itself packaged in a 3D printed and laser cut case.  Zarick has run through the process of turning a console in to a laptop on his own website, Edsjunk.

The process for the Playbook 4 is presumably exactly the same, featuring a 22″ Vizio 1080p LED TV and a 3D printed and laser cut case for the console. As you can see in the image above too, these laptop versions can be a bit chunky, the PS4 as we are used to seeing it is actually fairly small. Both consoles come with a HDMI out so that they can still be plugged in to a TV as a console rather than just being used as a laptop.

Its the EdsJunk XBOOK ONE LAPTOP! This is one of the first XBOX ONE Laptops that have been produced and built to order! Completely designed and manufactured with CNC Laser Cutting and 3D Printing. Check out the video and the website at www.xbookone.com

Due to popular demand after the XBOOK ONE Laptop, I present to you the PLAYBOOK 4! This is the first PS4 Laptop out there and came out nice! Check out the video and www.playbook4.com for more information including ordering info!

Facebook Safety Check tool allows you to communicate with your family during Disasters

The tool, named "Safety Check," will soon be available globally to over 1.32 billion Facebook users on Android, iOS, feature phones and the desktops. The tool is designed to be activated after a natural disaster and by using either the city you lived in or your last location - if you have checked in on “Nearby Friends”, it let’s you alert your friends and family that you are safe, while also tracking the status of others.
During a major disaster, Safety Check will help you:
  • Let friends and family know you’re safe
  • Check on others in the affected area
  • Mark your friends as safe
“In times of disaster or crisis, people turn to Facebook to check on loved ones and get updates,” wrote the company in a blog post about the feature. “It is in these moments that communication is most critical both for people in the affected areas and for their friends and families anxious for news.”

According to Facebook, this new move is in sake of 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster took place in Japan when a deadly tsunami set off 30-foot tidal waves that crashed into the shores of Japan, flooding entire cities and damaging nuclear power plants, where Facebook emerged out to be an effective tool in connecting loved ones and notifying family members of their safety.
“Our engineers in Japan took the first step toward creating a product to improve the experience of reconnecting after a disaster,” the company wrote. “They built the Disaster Message Board to make it easier to communicate with others. They launched a test of the tool a year later and the response was overwhelming.”
In disaster situation, this tool offers you a simple but an effective way to notify your family and friends about your situation by just clicking on a simple I'm safe / I'm not option, which will push a notification and news feed story that is visible only to people on your friends list.
If you have activated the tool, you will also receive a notification about friends who have marked themselves as safe too.
“If you’re ever in a situation that would require you to use Safety Check, we hope it’s a tool that helps you stay connected to those you care about, and gives you the comfort of knowing your loved ones are safe.”

You can also have a look on the demo video of Safety Check, which explains how the tool works.

10 Pinoys off to Japan to develop PH’s first microsatellite in space

Unknown to many, the Philippines is seriously into space research and development and that later this week, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is sending 10 Filipino students to Japan to learn how to develop a microsatellite that may be launched into space in 2016.
The DOST said the students will start their research on October 19 at Japan’s Tsukuba University (TU) and then head for Hokkaido University (HU) for their Master of Science (MS) until 2015.
After the study program, unless a hitch comes up, the 10 are expected to be able to develop and produce a microsatellite for launching into space in 2016.
It was learned that this is being undertaken by the government through the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD), one of DOST’s 20 attached agencies.
The space program has two components, a microsatellite project dubbed the Development of Philippine Scientific Earth Observation (PHL-MICROSAT) and a ground station, the Philippine Earth Data Resources and Observation (PEDRO) Center.

More or less P800 million has been earmarked for the space venture by DOST until 2016, the target launch of the planned microsatellite.
Marie Christie B. Santos, senior science research specialist at PCIEERD, said seven of the trainees will leave first just before the first day of their training, remaining three scheduled for training on November 4.
The microsatellite development is a DOST priority project, she said.
Santos said PCIEERD approved the Special Research Attachment of the 10 researchers: two from DOST’s Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI); four from University of the Philippines Diliman-Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (UPD-EEEI); one from UPD-Training for Applied Geodesy and Photogrammetry (TCAGP); and three from UPD-Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology (IESM).
She said the first group will be undergoing a study/research on Microsatellite BUS and the second group on microsatellite payload systems.
Their schedules are October 19-31 (the first part); a two-week study at TU; and November 4-16 at HU.
The second part lasts for five months from Nov. 5, 2014 to March, 2015.
“The two researches/studies of the 10 participants will be part of their MS (Master of Science studies) which will start in April 2015. By the end of their MS program, they will be able to produce/develop a microsatellite with the assistance/guidance of the Japanese researchers for Philippines which is targeted to be launched by 2016 (first or second quarter),” said Santos.
She said their thesis will be on the development of a microsatellite.
DOST Secretary Mario Go Montejo and PCIEERD Executive Director Dr. Rowena Cristina C. Guevara earlier this year made separate announcements about the country’s venturing into space.
With its own microsatellite, the government can use it to enhance weather detection and forecasts, determine agricultural growth patterns, and monitor forest cover as well as the country’s territorial borders, Montejo said.
He said the government will save much money with its own microsatellite by not relying anymore on expensive data from foreign sources.
Guevara said training on the microsatellite development will be in cooperation with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

iOS 8 loophole called the "Date Trick," possible for you to play classic SNES games on your iPhone

If you are a retro games lover and want to play it on your iPhone, a security loop in iOS 8 makes it possible for you to play classic SNES games on your iPhone, without the need to jailbreak your Apple devices.
Since Apple doesn’t allow emulators on the App Store for copyright reasons, making it difficult to install third-party emulators and other unapproved applications.
But, the latest upcoming beta version iOS 8.1 patched the famous "Date Trick" that had allowed iOS emulator makers to bypass App Store restrictions and run unofficial emulators on iPhones and iPads.

New Mac OS X botnet discovered : iWorm

In September 2014, Doctor Web's security experts researched several new threats to Mac OS X. One of them turned out to be a complex multi-purpose backdoor that entered the virus database as Mac.BackDoor.iWorm. Criminals can issue commands that get this program to carry out a wide range of instructions on the infected machines. A statistical analysis indicates that there are more than 17,000 unique IP addresses associated with infected Macs.

Criminals developed this malware using C++ and Lua. It should also be noted that the backdoor makes extensive use of encryption in its routines. During installation it is extracted into /Library/Application Support/JavaW, after which the dropper generates a p-list file so that the backdoor is launched automatically.
When Mac.BackDoor.iWorm is initially launched, it saves its configuration data in a separate file and tries to read the contents of the /Library directory to determine which of the installed applications the malware won't be interacting with. If ‘unwanted’ directories can't be found, the bot uses system queries to determine the home directory of the Mac OS X account under which it is running, checks the availability of its configuration file in the directory, and writes the data needed for it to continue to operate into the file.

Then Mac.BackDoor.iWorm opens a port on an infected computer and awaits an incoming connection. It sends a request to a remote site to acquire a list of control servers, and then connects to the remote servers and waits for instructions. It is worth mentioning that in order to acquire a control server address list, the bot uses the search service at reddit.com, and—as a search query—specifies hexadecimal values of the first 8 bytes of the MD5 hash of the current date. The reddit.com search returns a web page containing a list of botnet C&C servers and ports published by criminals in comments to the post minecraftserverlists under the account vtnhiaovyd.

The bot picks a random server from the first 29 addresses on the list and sends queries to each of them. Search requests to acquire the list are sent to reddit.com in five-minute intervals.
While establishing a connection to the server whose address is picked from the list using a special routine, the backdoor attempts to determine whether the server address is on the exceptions list and engages in a data exchange with the server to employ special routines for authenticating the remote host. If successful, the backdoor sends the server information about the open port on the infected machine and its unique ID and awaits directives.
Mac.BackDoor.iWorm is able to perform two types of commands: different directives depending on the binary data provided and Lua scripts. Basic backdoor commands for Lua-scripts can be used to perform the following actions:
  • Get the OS type.
  • Get the bot version.
  • Get the bot UID.
  • Get a value from the configuration file.
  • Set a parameter value in the configuration file.
  • Remove all parameters from the configuration file.
  • Get bot uptime.
  • Send a GET query.
  • Download a file.
  • Open a socket for an inbound connection and then execute the commands received.
  • Execute a system instruction.
  • Sleep.
  • Ban a node by IP.
  • Clear the list of banned nodes.
  • Get the node list.
  • Get a node IP.
  • Get node type.
  • Get node port.
  • Execute a nested Lua-script.
Information collected by Doctor Web's researchers shows that as of September 26, 2014, 17,658 IP addresses of infected devices were involved in the botnet created by hackers using Mac.BackDoor.iWorm. Most of them—4,610 (representing 26.1% of the total)—reside in the United States. Canada ranks second with 1,235 addresses (7%), and the United Kingdom ranks third with 1,227 IP addresses of infected computers (6.9% of the total). The late September 2014 geographical distribution of the botnet created with Mac.BackDoor.iWorm

THE HARD DRIVE YOU CAN MAKE SELF-DESTRUCT WITH A TEXT

Reminiscent of something from Mission: Impossible, the Autothysis128t is a hard drive you can make self-destruct with a text message should you lose it or if it happens to fall into the wrong hands.

You can encrypt it with a password, but for added protection it includes a built in cellular radio that can receive texts. You determine the kill command and, when necessary, text it to the drive to make it commit suicide.

The Autothysis128t is a 128GB drive, and can also be taught to self-destruct in the event that it is disconnected from your computer or if too many wrong passwords are attempted.
The device doesn’t exactly explode or anything like that, but it does scramble its insides to block all known methods of data recovery.
All of this extra security will set you back about $1600.

The Autothysis128t is the ultimate in data storage protection. The Drive offers a broad configuration set of options to safeguard your data from unauthorised access.

The Autothysis128t is a 128GB SSD Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) with 256-bit AES CBC hardware level encryption and computer independent 2 factor authentication via a separate Token. The encryption engine is FIPS 140-2 level 3 certified.

The 2.5” Drive can be used inside a computer via the SATAII interface or externally via the micro USB3.0 port with a micro USB3.0 or micro USB2.0 cable.

The Drive has built in GSM with the capability of physical data destruction on demand. It is the first SSD Drive in the world to offer remote fragmentation of the NAND Flash storage within the Drive.

This patented technology is designed to fragment the NAND Flash along with the security controller to impede any data recovery technique that might be applied in an attempt to gain access to the encrypted data. No amount of computer processing power will help if a NAND Flash can't be mounted onto a PCB. The whole design approach of this Drive was based on reverse engineering data recovery techniques.

Physical data destruction – on demand. The data destruction process can be triggered by any of the following:
  • Via SMS 'kill message' (user defined)
  • Starvation of the GSM signal
  • Anti-tamper Case
  • Tap-to-destroy function in the Token
  • Low battery level
  • Removing the Drive from a PC
  • PIN code retries being exceeded

Token - The Token is the command centre for the Drive and allows easy access to all configuration options. It enables the user to quickly change the level of security depending on the users own security risk landscape. Up to three Tokens can be assigned to one Drive and up to three Drives can be assigned to one Token.

Pakistani Man Arrested by FBI for Selling 'StealthGenie' Spyware App "the spousal cheat"

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)  Monday, September 29, 2014  has arrested the CEO of a UK-based company for allegedly advertising and selling a spyware app to individuals who suspect their romantic partners of cheating on them.

The dodgy cell phone spyware application, dubbed as StealthGenie, monitors victims’ phone calls, text messages, videos, emails and other communications "without detection" when it is installed on a target's phone, according to the Department of Justice.

The chief executive officer of a mobile spyware maker is a Pakistani man collared 31-year-old Hammad Akbar, of Lahore, who was arrested over the weekend in Los Angeles for flogging StealthGenie spyware application and now faces a number of federal charges.

According to the US Department of Justice, Akbar operates a company called InvoCode, which sold the StealthGenie spyware app online that can intercept communications to and from mobile phones including Apple, Google, and BlackBerry devices.

The company's business plan for the product focused on "the spousal cheat" market, which was expected to constitute 65 percent of the StealthGenie app purchasers, as the plan even spelled that out, stating that the target audience was cheating spouses and romantic partners.

STEALTHGENIE MOBILE DEVICE SPYWARE APPLICATION

The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has received reports related to the fraudulent advertisement and selling of StealthGenie, a mobile device spyware application (“app”) that is alleged to illegally intercept wire and electronic communications made using mobile phones. The indictment and arrest of StealthGenie's CEO for selling the spyware coincides with disabling the website hosting StealthGenie and its associated online portal.

What are mobile device spyware apps?

Mobile device spyware apps are developed for smart mobile phones and may allow a purchaser of the app to, amongst other things, surreptitiously monitor a phone user’s communications and whereabouts.
The purchaser must generally have physical access to a target mobile phone to install a mobile device spyware app, which is usually downloaded to the phone. Each phone software platform, such as Apple Inc.’s (“Apple”) iOs (for iPhones) and Google Inc.’s (“Google”) Android, require specific steps to complete the installation process.

How does StealthGenie work?

The StealthGenie app works in so-called “stealth” mode and is undetectable by most individuals. It is advertised as being untraceable. According to the indictment, StealthGenie’s capabilities include the following:
  • Call Recording: Records all incoming/outgoing voice calls or those specified by the purchaser of the app
  • Call Interception: Allows the purchaser to intercept calls on the phone to be monitored while they take place, without the knowledge of the monitored smartphone user
  • Recorded Surroundings: Allows the purchaser to call the phone and activate it at any time to monitor all surrounding conversations within a fifteen (15)-foot radius without the knowledge of the user
  • Electronic Mail: Allows the purchaser to monitor the incoming and outgoing e-mail messages of user, read their saved drafts, and view attachments
  • SMS: Allows the purchaser to monitor the user’s incoming and outgoing SMS messages
  • Voicemail: Allows the purchaser to monitor the incoming voicemail messages
  • Contacts: Allows the purchaser to monitor the entries in the user’s address book
  • Photos: Allows the purchaser to monitor the photos on the user’s phone
  • Videos: Allows the purchaser to monitor the videos on the user’s phone
  • Appointments: Allows the purchaser to monitor the user’s calendar entries
The purchaser can review information transferred from the target mobile phone via an online portal. These intercepted communications are stored on the StealthGenie website. For example, a purchaser can log-in to the online portal to access information pulled from the user’s phone such as messages, e-mail, photos, and phone calls.

Can a person tell if a mobile device spyware app is on his or her phone?

Mobile device spyware apps are developed and advertised as being invisible to targets and act in an undetectable manner. For example, an app can be installed to look like another type of app or file, such as a digital photo application. Therefore, it will be difficult for the non-expert user to determine whether or not spyware is on his or her phone.
Certain companies market apps and other products that will scan a phone for malicious software. Private computer forensic companies can physically perform similar scans. Federal law enforcement is not in position to determine the effectiveness of products and services from individual private vendors or entities. If a user is concerned about the potential presence of a mobile device spyware app on their phone, the only way to ensure that any app is permanently removed from the phone is to perform a “factory reset,” as described immediately below.

How can a mobile device spyware app be removed?

If you believe your phone may contain a mobile device spyware app, the best option is to conduct a “factory reset” of the phone. When a reset takes place, the phone is restored to its original condition (i.e., the condition at the time of purchase).
Please be advised that this means any and all data and apps installed after purchase will be removed from the phone, including all stored information. Please make sure to back-up any data you want to save from your phone before conducting a factory reset. Please note that performing a factory reset of a phone will not delete any information that has already been already collected from the phone by the mobile device spyware app from a vendor’s website.
Apple has provided information concerning how to perform a factory reset of an iPhone running the latest version of their mobile device operating system athttp://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414 . Because Google’s Android operating system is customizable by a phone manufacturer, please contact your phone’s manufacturer for instructions on how to factory reset your phone, or take it to the store from which you purchased the phone. Similar action should be taken to determine how to factory reset a non-iPhone or non-Android phone.
