Microsoft will start upgrading Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines to Windows 10

In less than 24 hours, Microsoft will start upgrading Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines to Windows 10. The software giant is preparing for this big release, at 12AM ET on July 29th (9PM PST on July 28th), by pre-loading the final version of Windows 10 on PCs eligible for the upgrade. A number of Windows 7 and Windows 8 users who have registered for the upgrade have started noticing that the full installer files for Windows 10 have been downloaded to C:\$windows.~BT as Microsoft gets ready for release.

In my case Windows 10 have been downloaded to C:\$windows.~WS ... Now I'm creating Windows 10 ISO 32 and 64 bit via media creation tool... Notice the Product Key config is Xrml (Digital License)..

Microsoft will unlock and activate the Windows 10 install at midnight tonight, allowing some Windows 7 and Windows 8 users to upgrade. Not everyone will get access to the Windows 10 upgrade initially, though. Microsoft is rolling the upgrade out gradually to compatible systems, and the company is creating a queue to distribute the update in waves.

Windows 10 testers (like me) have already been testing the final bits and they will be the first to receive a Day One patch that Microsoft is developing. The software maker has also been rolling out daily hotfixes to existing testers.

Remote Controlled RAT

We have been rooting around in rat brains for ages; neuroscientists often send electrical signals directly into rodents' skulls to elicit certain reactions and behaviours. Usually, however, this work requires hooking a rodent up to a system of cables, severely restricting its movement. When the SUNY team, led by neuroscientist John Chapin, began their work more than a decade ago, they wanted to create something different – a method for delivering these electrical pulses wirelessly. Such a system would allow scientists to manipulate a rat's movements and behaviours while it was roaming freely and give us a robo-rodent suitable for all sorts of special operations.

Rats have an excellent sense of smell, so cyborg rats could be trained to detect the scent of explosives, for instance, and then steered to a field suspected to contain land mines. (The task would pose no danger to the animals, which are too light to set off mines.) Or they could be directed into collapsed buildings and tasked with sniffing out humans trapped beneath the rubble, performing a job similar to the one Maharbiz imagines for his cyborg insects. "They could fit through crawl spaces that a bloodhound never could," says Linda Hermer-Vazquez, a neuroscientist who was part of the SUNY team at the time.

They began by opening up a rat's skull and implanting steel wires in its brain. The wires ran from the brain out through a large hole in the skull, and into a backpack harnessed to the rodent. ("Backpack" seems to be a favourite euphemism among the cyborg-animal crowd.) This rat pack, as it were, contained a suite of electronics, including a microprocessor and a receiver capable of picking up distant signals. Chapin or one of his colleagues could sit 500m away from the rat and use a laptop to transmit a message to the receiver, which relayed the signal to the microprocessor, which sent an electric charge down the wires and into the rat's brain.

During training, the SUNY scientists used an unconventional system of reinforcement. When the rat turned in the correct direction, the researchers used a third wire to send an electrical pulse into what's known as the medial forebrain bundle (MFB), a region of the brain involved in processing pleasure. Studies in humans and other animals have shown that direct activation of the MFB just plain feels good. (When the scientists gave the rats the chance to stimulate their own MFBs by pressing down on a lever, the animals did so furiously – hitting the lever as many as 200 times in 20 minutes.) So sending a jolt of electricity zinging down to a rat's MFB acted as a virtual reward for good behaviour.

Over the course of 10 sessions, the robo-rats learned to respond to the cues and rewards being piped into their brains. As a demonstration, the researchers simulated the kind of search-and-rescue task a robo-rat might be asked to perform in the real world. They rubbed tissues against their forearms and taught the rodents to identify this human odour. They constructed a small Plexiglas arena, filled it with a thick layer of sawdust and buried human-scented tissues inside. When they released the robo-rats into the arena, the animals tracked down the tissues in less than a minute. The scientists also discovered that the rats that received MFB rewards found the target odours faster and dug for them more energetically than rodents that had been trained with conventional food rewards. As Hermer-Vazquez recalls: "The robo-rats were incredibly motivated and very accurate."

Backyard Brains

Greg Gage and Tim Marzullo, a pair of former neuroscience postdoctoral fellows, are taking these techniques and making them available to anyone with an internet connection and about £50 to spare. In 2009, Gage and Marzullo established Backyard Brains, a company that sells low-cost kits that will turn any interested amateur into a neuroscientist, if only for a day or two. Their first product was a little contraption known as the SpikerBox. On sale for $99.99 (£65), the device lets customers observe neural firing in a cockroach in real time. (A set of three roaches is $12 extra.) The procedure is simple: just insert two needle-like electrodes into a cockroach's leg, and the SpikerBox will do the rest, amplifying the electrical activity of the insect's neurons and transmitting it to an attached computer or smartphone as that characteristic visual pattern of peaks and valleys. For their second product, Gage and Marzullo decided to push the boundaries further, to venture beyond brain observation and into brain control. Taking inspiration from the world of cyborg animals, they created a kit that provides their customers with all the tools they need to take over the nervous system of a living cockroach. In principle, the Backyard Brains RoboRoach is nearly indistinguishable from the beetles Maharbiz is making in a university lab – and that is precisely what is so remarkable about it. It means we can all experiment with bionic bugs in our own homes.

If you're new to the hobby of animal mind manipulation, the cockroach is an excellent place to start. Because a roach relies on its long, fluid-filled antennae for a host of sensory and navigational functions, its nervous system is stunningly easy to hack; all a wannabe roachmaster has to do is thread a wire inside each antenna. ("It's like it's designed to be a cyborg," Marzullo says.)

The wires run out of its antennae and into a small black box Marzullo has glued on to its head. He plugs this "connector" into the cockroach backpack, a red-and-green assemblage of circuit boards. The electronics are slightly modified versions of circuit boards that come from a widely available toy: a plastic, remote-controlled inchworm called the HexBug that retails for about £7.50 at toy stores. When these circuit boards are linked to the head-mounted connector, Marzullo and Gage can use the remote control that comes with the toy to deliver pulses of electricity to the roach. "The world's first commercially available cyborg," Marzullo says.

Marzullo has kindly prepared a roach for me. Its sticky legs tickle my palm as I carry it to the sidewalk. I place it down gingerly, and it begins to scuttle off. I fumble with the remote before finding the "L" button. I hit it, and the roach abruptly spins to the left. The effect is less dramatic after that, but convincing.

Gage and Marzullo attract controversy because they are taking biotechnology out of the lab and putting it into the hands of the public. And they are criticised for meddling with animal bodies for "trivial" purposes. Most people, Marzullo explains, have accepted the use of animals for scientific research, military defence or food. "But if you exploit animals for education," he says, "people aren't cool with that." Is educating students about the nervous system – and potentially encouraging a new generation of neuroscientists – a less-justifiable use of animals than hunting out mines or earthquake survivors? It's time to start thinking through these issues, because now that the tools of brain control have been liberated from the lab, there's no telling how they'll be used.

Indeed, there is a growing community of "biohackers", science enthusiasts who are experimenting with genes, brains and bodies outside the confines of traditional laboratories, working on shoestring budgets in their garages and attics, or joining the community labs that are springing up around the globe. Some of these resourceful do-it-yourselfers are even building their own versions of high-tech laboratory equipment that normally costs thousands of dollars.

Backyard Brains is tapping into this movement, giving amateurs access to some of science's most sophisticated tools and techniques. The latest, greatest cyborg critters may come not from state-of-the-art labs, but the minds of curious kids and individual hobbyists. Though scientists will continue to build their cyborg animals, Maharbiz says he fully expects that "kids will be able to hack these things, like they wrote code in the Commodore 64 days". We are heading towards a world in which anyone with a little time, money and imagination can commandeer an animal's brain. That's as good a reason as any to start thinking about where we'd draw our ethical lines. The animal cyborgs are here, and we'll each have to decide whether we want a turn at the controls.

How to Watch Worldwide Cyberattacks Live

Cyberattacks are becoming more common, then you should check out the four sites below: They purport to provide real-time maps of the sources and targets of hacking attacks taking place right now all over the world.

(Of course, these maps just happen to be provided by security vendors who have no reason at all to exaggerate the threat.)

Norse Attack Map

Norse is an Internet security company that helps companies prevent and deflect malicious attacks. And to give you a better idea of how many attacks it could help prevent, it has created its Norse Attack Map.

The image above — which looks like Missile Command on steroids — shows just a snippet of hacking attempts around the world, the countries from which they originate, and the countries that they are attacking.

In reality, the attackers are hitting what Norse calls honey pots — special traps designed to detect unwanted network intrusions by hackers. It’s important to note that the location an attack comes from isn’t necessarily its true origin, as hackers can make an attack look like it’s coming from one place when it’s really coming from another.

Digital Attack Map

Created by Google and the network security and management company Arbor Networks, Digital Attack Map gives you a live look at the insane number of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks happening at any given time.

These kinds of attacks usually involve a group surreptitiously taking control of a massive network of computers, then making them all try to access the same website at the exact same time. That flood of requests can eventually overload the target system and force it to be taken offline.

Kaspersky Cyberthreat Real-Time Map

You might know Kaspersky for its antivirus software, but that’s not all the company does. It also protects network systems for some seriously large businesses. To give those customers a better idea of the security threats they face, Kaspersky built its Cyberthreat Real-Time Map.

The map itself takes information about malicious software (including run-of-the-mill viruses) trying to invade someone’s computer, strips it of any personal data, and displays it on a map showing where the attacks are happening.

FireEye Cyber Threat Map

FireEye’s Cyber Threat Map doesn’t post information in real time, but it still gives you a good idea about the kind of threats posed by hackers and criminals around the world.

The map shows communications over the last 30 days between malware installed on target networks and the servers that control them. Sure it’s not happening live, but it still helps spread fear, er, understanding about how dangerous the Web can be.

Windows 10's game DVR tool capture video in any app

Microsoft introduced the Game bar to Windows 10 as a means for recording gameplay sessions on PCs. But that’s not all it’s good for, as it turns out: you can also use the new Game bar recording function as a quick and dirty screen video recorder for other apps. In fact, this could work as a basic alternative to third-party options like Camtasia, as BetaNews first discovered.

The new feature only works in more recent updates to the Windows 10 insider preview or the latest Windows 10 RTM build 10240.

You can call up the Game bar by hitting the Windows logo key + G. However, you can’t call it up anywhere. In our tests, for example, you wouldn’t see it on the bare desktop, File explorer, or Notepad. Try it out in anything else—such as a modern UI app or the Steam dashboard—and it should work. In other words, this feature appears to be limited to apps and won’t work for system level activities.

Once you hit the Game bar shortcut, a pop-up window will appear as seen above that says Do you want to open Game bar? The only option is a checkbox that says Yes, this is a game.

Click that checkbox and the Game bar will appear. Now you can just hit the red record button to start your recording session, or you can use the keyboard shortcut Windows key + Alt + R.

That’s about all there is to this feature. You can find your saved videos in the Game DVR section of the Xbox app, or inside your user folder under Video > Captures.

NOTE:
Your PC needs to have one of these video cards to run Game DVR:
AMD: AMD Radeon HD 7000 series, HD 7000M series, HD 8000 series, HD 8000M series, R9 series, and R7 series.
NVIDIA: GeForce 600 series or later, GeForce 800M series or later, Quadro Kxxx series or later.

HORNET: High-speed Onion Routing at the Network Layer

Many anonymising networks, including The Onion Router (or TOR) network, are often slow because the data passing through the networks is encrypted a many numbers of times.

However, the high-speed onion routing network HORNET is capable of handling anonymous traffic at speeds of more than 93 Gbps while maintaining privacy.

The new anonymous network is built by researcher Chen Chen of Carnegie Mellon University, along with Daniele Enrico Asoni, Adrian Perrig and David Barrera of the Zurich's Federal Institute of Technology, and George Danezis of University College London.

The security researchers' ultimate goal is "Internet-scale anonymity."

In a paper (PDF) titled HORNET: High-speed Onion Routing at the Network Layer, the team says Hornet is a low-latency onion routing system that enables end-to-end anonymous channels with a quicker and more secure alternative to Tor.

Tor network, which handles over 2 Million user on its network daily, is currently used by journalists, activists, law enforcement and hackers to disguise from where they are browsing the Internet.
However, Tor has its faults. It is often slow and frustrating because its performance is based on the number of systems that make up the network. HORNET aims to resolve this issue.
"[HORNET] is designed to be highly efficient," reads the paper, "instead of keeping state at each relay, connection state (such as onion layer decryption keys) is carried within packet headers, allowing intermediate nodes to quickly forward traffic for large numbers of clients."

High Speed with High level of Security

Researchers say that unlike TOR-like systems, HORNET does not keep per-session states or "perform computationally expensive operations for data forwarding," allowing it to scale as required without any limitations.
Moreover, the changes done by the team made HORNET less susceptible to confirmation attacks that have been used to unmask users of Tor by monitoring traffic streams and packet flows.
HORNET raises the security bar since spy agencies or hackers would need to control "a significant percentage of ISPs" across multiple geopolitical areas, while keeping their whole surveillance operation quiet and spying on HORNET's users effectively.
The new Tor-Style networks could be of great help to users who are currently relying on Tor and other onion routing systems. You can download the paper PDF for full technical details on HORNET.

NASA Found Earth Twin Planet Kepler 2.0 -452b

NASA said Thursday that its Kepler spacecraft has spotted "Earth's bigger, older cousin": the first nearly Earth-size planet to be found in the habitable zone of a star similar to our own.

Though NASA can't say for sure whether the planet is rocky like ours or has water and air, it's the closest match yet found.

On Thursday, July 23, NASA announced the discovery of Kepler-452b, Earth's bigger, older cousin. This artistic concept shows what the planet might look like. Scientists can't tell yet whether Kepler-452b has oceans and continents like Earth.

"Today, Earth is a little less lonely," Kepler researcher Jon Jenkins said.

The planet, Kepler-452b, is about 1,400 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus. It's about 60% bigger than Earth, NASA says, and is located in its star's habitable zone -- the region where life-sustaining liquid water is possible on the surface of a planet.

A visitor there would experience gravity about twice that of Earth's, and planetary scientists say the odds of it having a rocky surface are "better than even."

While it's a bit farther from its star than Earth is from the sun, its star is brighter, so the planet gets about the same amount of energy from its star as Earth does from the sun. And that sunlight would be very similar to Earth's, Jenkins said.

The planet "almost certainly has an atmosphere," Jenkins said, although scientists can't say what it's made of. But if the assumptions of planetary geologists are correct, he said, Kepler-452b's atmosphere would probably be thicker than Earth's, and it would have active volcanoes.

It takes 385 days for the planet to orbit its star, very similar to Earth's 365-day year, NASA said. And because it's spent so long orbiting in this zone -- 6 billion years -- it's had plenty of time to brew life, Jenkins said.

"That's substantial opportunity for life to arise, should all the necessary ingredients and conditions for life exist on this planet," he said in a statement.

Before the discovery of this planet, one called Kepler-186f was considered the most Earthlike, according to NASA. That planet, no more than a 10th bigger than Earth, is about 500 light-years away from us. But it gets only about a third of the energy from its star as Earth does from the sun, and noon there would look similar to the evening sky here, NASA says.

The $600 million Kepler mission launched in 2009 with a goal to survey a portion of the Milky Way for habitable planets.

From a vantage point 64 million miles from Earth, it scans the light from distant stars, looking for almost imperceptible drops in a star's brightness, suggesting a planet has passed in front of it.

It has discovered more than 1,000 planets. Twelve of those, including Kepler-425b, have been less than twice the size of Earth and in the habitable zones of the stars they orbit.

Missions are being readied to move scientists closer to the goal of finding yet more planets and cataloging their atmospheres and other characteristics.

In 2017, NASA plans to launch a planet-hunting satellite called TESS that will be able to provide scientists with more detail on the size, mass and atmospheres of planets circling distant stars.

The next year, the James Webb Space Telescope will go up. That platform, NASA says, will provide astonishing insights into other worlds, including their color, seasonal differences, weather and even the potential presence of vegetation.

How to Safety Remove or Delete Previous Windows Installation

If you install Windows 10 by performing a custom installation or new Windows build update and don't format the partition during the installation process, files that were used in your previous version of Windows are stored in the Windows.old folder. The type of files in this folder depends on your computer. After you’ve used Windows 10 for a while—for example, one or two weeks—and you’re confident that your files and settings are back to where you want them to be, you can safely reclaim disk space by using Disk Cleanup to delete the Windows.old folder.

Warning!! Before you use Disk Cleanup, make sure that all of your files and settings are in Windows 10 where you expect them to be. Deleting the Windows.old folder can’t be undone.

1. Open Disk Cleanup by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button. In the search box, type Disk Cleanup, and then, in the list of results, click Disk Cleanup.

If you're prompted to choose a drive, click the drive you just installed Windows on, and then click OK.

2. In the Disk Cleanup dialog box, on the Disk Cleanup tab, click Clean up system files.

If you're again prompted to choose a drive, click the drive you just installed Windows on, and then click OK.

3. Select the Previous Windows installation(s) check box, and any other check boxes for the files you want to delete  like Windows temporary installation file, and then click OK.

4. In the message that appears, click Delete Files.

Windows 10 RTM (TH1 build 10240) -- download full version, before release date

Microsoft has now finalized Windows 10, ready for its release later this month. Sources familiar with Microsoft's  selected build 10240 as the final release to manufacturing (RTM) copy, allowing PC makers to start loading the software onto new machines ready for release. We understand that Microsoft is signing off on the build internally today, and may announce the RTM publicly by the end of the week or choose to ignore the milestone and focus on the launch. While Microsoft is planning to launch Windows 10 on July 29th, new PCs with the software won’t be available until some weeks later. Microsoft is now pushing for existing and new device owners to upgrade to Windows 10 as part of a new marketing campaign.

Microsoft will first roll out build 10240 to its Windows 10 testers, and the company is now focused on patches and fixes that will also roll out alongside the OS launch. While the RTM process is a milestone for Microsoft, especially almost 20 years to the day the company finalized Windows 95, it’s really just one step in a new model that will see Windows act more like a service. In the future Microsoft will be updating Windows 10 regularly, especially the built-in apps that power most experiences in the operating system. Microsoft will test these future updates with its Insider program first, before rolling them out more broadly over the coming months.

But what if you want to do a clean install?

Unfortunately, no new ISOs have been provided [because] it wants insiders to try out the upgrade path. (this what i do)

Fortunately, the ESD files that Microsoft uses to ship these new builds allow anyone to create new ISOs.

In my case Windows 10 have been downloaded to C:\$windows.~WS ... Now I'm creating Windows 10 ISO 32 and 64 bit via media creation tool... Notice the Product Key config is Xrml (Digital License)..

When Windows 10 Technical Preview is upgraded to a new build using the PC Settings Download & Install method, Microsoft uses the ESD file format to deliver install files needed. ESD stands for Electronic Software Delivery, the Windows install.esd file contains the usual Windows install.wim file (WIM = Windows Imaging), encrypted and compressed. Install.wim file in its turn contains everything needed for a complete Windows installation.

Things you should know:

A Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 product keycannot activate Windows 10. Windows 10 uses its own unique product key.

By default, Windows 10 builds are pre-keyed, meaning, you do not have to enter a product key and should not be prompted to enter one as long as you upgraded from an activated Windows 7 or Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 license or Windows 10 Preview build.

If you perform a clean install on first attempt, you will have to start over from an activated Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 installation.
If you are prompted to enter a product key, click Do this later and give it a few days, Windows 10 will activate automatically.

Activation servers are being overwhelmedat the moment because of the volume of upgrades, so give it some time if you get an error message such as (0XC004E003, ,0x8007000D, 0x8007232b or 0x8007007B) Windows 10 will eventually activate as long as you upgrade using the appropriate method.
