Benefits of Drinking Coffee

Coffee is a brewed beverage prepared from the roasted or baked seeds of several species of an evergreen shrub of the genus Coffea. The two most common sources of coffee beans are the highly regarded Coffea arabica, and the "robusta" form of the hardier Coffea canephora. The latter is resistant to the coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix), but has a more bitter taste. Coffee plants are cultivated in more than 70 countries, primarily in equatorial Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa. Once ripe, coffee "berries" are picked, processed and dried to yield the seeds inside. The seeds are then roasted to varying degrees, depending on the desired flavor, before being ground and brewed to create coffee.

It can be prepared and presented in a variety of ways. The effect of coffee on human health has been a subject of many studies; however, results have varied in terms of coffee's relative benefit. The majority of recent research suggests that moderate coffee consumption is benign or mildly beneficial in healthy adults

Coffee at work.  How do we benefit from it?

Just smelling coffee could make you less stressed

Researchers at the Seoul National University examined the brains of rats who were stressed with sleep deprivation and discovered that those who were exposed to coffee aromas experienced changes in brain proteins tied to that stress. Note, this aroma study doesn't relate to stress by itself, only to the stress felt as a result of sleep deprivation. Now, we're not entirely sure if this means you should keep a bag of roasted coffee beans on your nightstand every night, but feel free to try!

Coffee Can Improve Energy Levels and Make You Smarter

Coffee can help people feel less tired and increase energy levels.
This is because it contains a stimulant called caffeine, which is actually the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance in the world. After you drink coffee, the caffeine is absorbed into the bloodstream. From there, it travels into the brain.

In the brain, caffeine blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter called Adenosine.
When that happens, the amount of other neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and dopamine actually increases, leading to enhanced firing of neuron.
Many controlled trials in humans show that coffee improves various aspects of brain function. This includes memory, mood, vigilance, energy levels, reaction times and general cognitive function

Coffee Can Fight Depression and Make You Happier

Depression is a serious mental disorder that causes a significantly reduced quality of life.
It is incredibly common and about 4.1% of people in the U.S. currently meet the criteria for clinical depression .
In a Harvard study published in 2011, women who drank 4 or more cups per day had a 20% lower risk of becoming depressed .
Another study with 208,424 individuals found that those who drank 4 or more cups per day were 53% less likely to commit suicide . Coffee appears to lower the risk of developing depression and may dramatically reduce the risk of suicide

Coffee is The Biggest Source of Antioxidants in The Western Diet

For people who eat a standard Western diet, coffee may actually be the healthiest aspect of the diet.
That’s because coffee contains a massive amount of antioxidants.
In fact, studies show that most people get more antioxidants from coffee than both fruits and vegetables… combined .
Coffee is one of the healthiest beverages on the planet. Period.

The Caffeine Can Drastically Improve Physical Performance

Caffeine stimulates the nervous system, causing it to send signals to the fat cells to break down body fat.
But caffeine also increases Epinephrine (Adrenaline) levels in the blood .

This is the “fight or flight” hormone, designed to make our bodies ready for intense physical exertion.
Caffeine makes the fat cells break down body fat, releasing them into the blood as free fatty acids and making them available as fuel .
Given these effects, it is not surprising to see that caffeine can improve physical performance by 11-12%, on average .
Because of this, it makes sense to have a strong cup of coffee about a half an hour before you head to the gym.

Filipino engineer tops Southeast Asia in Google Code Jam

MANILA, Philippines – A Filipino engineer outranked his Southeast Asian colleagues in the online semifinals of Google’s yearly Code Jam, a competition for coders.

Kevin Atienza, an artificial intelligence engineer working for Kalibrr, now belongs to the top 0.15% of the world’s coders, says Google

Kevin Atienza, an artificial intelligence engineer working for Kalibrr, participated in Google Code Jam 2014. From a roster of 50,000 participants whittled down to 500 contenders, Atienza reached the third round.
Round 3 is a 150-minute flurry of questions that test semifinalists’ speed and critical thinking skills.
While Atienza did not rank in the top 25 needed to advance to the finals, Atienza’s 72nd place finish put him at the top of Southeast Asia’s contenders for Google’s coding throne, currently held by Ivan Miatselski of Belarus.
Kalibrr’s announcement on Atienza's 72nd place finish also noted that his placement put him in the top 0.15% of the world’s coders.
Atienza hopes to eventually represent the Philippines in the Google Code Jam finals, and become the second Southeast Asian to reach that pinnacle of coding excellence. – Rappler.com

Low-priced Android smartphone: bundled with spyware

Beware this low-priced smartphone from China – it may come bundled with spyware, a German security firm claimed this week.

Germany-based G Data said the "N9500" made by Chinese maker Star is the first phone to have the spyware installed as part of the firmware.

For the first time ever, the experts at the German security vendor have discovered a smartphone that comes with extensive spyware straight from the factory. The malware is disguised as the Google Play Store and is part of the pre-installed Android apps. The spyware runs in the background and cannot be detected by users. Unbeknownst to the user, the smartphone sends personal data to a server located in China and is able to covertly install additional applications.
This makes it possible to retrieve personal data, intercept calls and online banking data, read emails and text messages or control the camera and microphone remotely. The affected model "N9500" is produced by the Chinese manufacturer Star and looks very similar to a smartphone from a well-known manufacturer. It is not possible to remove the manipulated app and the spyware since they are integrated into the firmware. Large online retailers are still selling the Android device at prices ranging from 130 to 165 euros and distributing it across Europe.

"The options with this spy program are nearly unlimited. Online criminals have full access to the smartphone," notes Christian Geschkat, Product Manager Mobile Solutions. "G DATA customers reported a detection by our security solution and thus alerted us to this criminal tactic."

Test purchase led to alarming results

After receiving tip-offs from customers, the G DATA security experts purchased and analysed the device. This is how they found out that the firmware contained theTrojan Android.Trojan.Uupay.D, disguised as the Google Play Store. The spy function is invisible to the user and cannot be deactivated. This means that online criminals have full access to the smartphone and all personal data. Logs that could make an access visible to the users are deleted directly. The program also blocks the installation of security updates.

"The only thing users see is an app with the Google Play Store icon in the running processes; other than that, the application is completely disguised," reports Christian Geschkat. "Unfortunately, removing the Trojan is not possible as it is part of the device's firmware and apps that fall into this category cannot be deleted. This includes the fake Google Play Store app of the N9500." Users can use G DATA Internet Security for Android, which detects the malware as Android.Trojan.Uupay.D, to find out whether their own device is affected. The expert advises affected customers to contact the respective online shop to return the device.

Risk for users

The smartphone represents a serious risk to users. The spy program enables criminals to secretly install apps, which enables the whole spectrum of abuse: localisation, interception & recording, purchases, banking fraud such as theft of mobile TANs, and sending of premium SMSs.
It is impossible to find out where the data is sent. "The intercepted data is sent to an anonymous server in China," says Christian Geschkat. "It is not possible to find out who ends up receiving and using the data."

The price of the mobile device is supposed to attract users

The cheap price ranging from 130 to 165 euros comes as a surprise, considering the high technological standard of the device. The quad-core smartphone is supplied with extensive accessories, such as a second battery, car charging adapter and second cover. Comparable devices from well-known brands cost almost three times that much.
The security experts at G DATA think that the low price of the mobile device is made possible by the subsequent selling of data records stolen from the smartphone owner. "In general, particularly cheap offers online that seem tempting should make buyers suspicious. There’s no such thing as a free lunch," advises Christian Geschkat.

Smartphones and tablets targeted by criminals

The increasing popularity of smartphones and tablets has not gone unnoticed by online criminals. There are about 40 million smartphone users in Germany alone. More than 1.2 million new malware programs for Android appeared last year and this number is expected to rise sharply. All the more reason for users to use a comprehensive security solution for their mobile devices.

USB FLash Drive Ready Boost

A boost in performance for older PCs

If you're rocking a PC with limited RAM, a flash drive can help speed things up if you're running Windows Vista, 7, or 8. Simply slap that puppy in and choose to speed up your PC's performance with ReadyBoost when prompted.

(If the option doesn't appear, right-click on the flash drive in File Explorer, select Properties, and open the ReadyBoost tab.)

ReadyBoost uses your flash drive's memory as a cache, to speed up access times for your hard drive. Flash drives aren't as fast as traditional RAM, and you won't even be allowed to use ReadyBoost if your PC has a decent amount of free memory, but the tool can definitely help on older PCs with 1GB (or less!) of RAM.

Behind Facebook Downtime Yesterday

Social networking giant, Facebook, suffered an outage yesterday which started at around 4PM local time and caused a bit of a frenzy over the Internet. The good news is Facebook was back online in a less than 30 minutes .

The reason for the short downtime? A software glitch.

“Late last night, we ran into an issue while updating the configuration of one of our software systems. Not long after we made the change, some people started to have trouble accessing Facebook. We quickly spotted and fixed the problem, and in less than 30 minutes Facebook was back to 100% for everyone. This doesn’t happen often, but when it does we make sure we learn from the experience so we can make Facebook that much more reliable. Nothing is more important to us than making sure Facebook is there when people need it, and we apologize to anyone who may have had trouble connecting last night.” said Facebook in an e-mailed statement.
Facebook has 1.28 billion monthly active users and 1.01 billion mobile monthly active users as of March 31, 2014. Approximately 81.2% of their daily active users are outside the U.S. and Canada.

This outage was the longest since April 2010, when the company’s platform and all social plug-ins went out for 2.5 hours.

Woman to be First Charged Under Philippine Cybercrime Law

MANILA - A woman has been indicted for computer fraud in the first such case under the Philippines' controversial cybercrime law, justice department records showed Sunday.

The Department of Justice, through the Las Piñas City Prosecutor, has filed its first case under the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

City Prosecutor Marylin Cynthia Luang recommended two counts of computer-related forgery to be filed against a certain Karla Martinez Ignacio.

The Philippine National Bank, as a complainant, discovered nine unauthorized transactions – two of which involved remittances made by Ignacio using her ATM card.

PNB Guam Branch Manager Serafin Agdagdag reported the unauthorized transactions, after he found out his user ID was used to transact the said remittances.

The bank after being informed that Ignacio would withdraw the remaining balance from her account sought the help of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Ignacio allegedly used the computer-contrived data to withdraw from the PNB’s branch in Barangay Almanza, Las Pinas part of a total P1,373,053 deposited in her savings account and another account in the name of Ostrich Business Services, which she owns.

The fraudulent transactions started when the PNB branch in Guam informed the head office of the questionable transactions, triggering an internal probe.

In the course of the investigation, the PNB discovered several unauthorized transactions, including the purported remittance of P1.2 million by one Sunny Pulan Juan to Ostrich Business Services, and another one for P173,053 made by Gretchen Quilit Andres to the same branch in Almanza, and credited also to an account of Ostrich Business Services.

The bank discovered that Ignacio managed to withdraw P150, 000 from these supposed deposits. She was unable to withdraw the rest of the amount after the bank noticed the fraud.
The prosecutor’s resolution said “there was enough evidence to show fraudulent transactions, especially since no deposit of money were made at PNB Guam and that there was an illegal or unauthorized access to the computer of the said bank branch which allowed the inputting of inauthentic computer computed data by the remitters (Sunny Pulan Juan and Gretchen Quilit Andres) whose real identities and whereabouts are still unknown.”

Using such “inauthentic data,” Ignacio went to the bank branch in Almanza to withdraw the amount on May 16 and that she went again last May 22 to withdraw the remainder of the account but was unsuccessful after the bank reversed the amount, prosecutors said.
“She knowingly used the said inauthentic data to with intent to gain and with intent to cause damage to the bank. She probably knew that the money credited to her accounts  are results of illegal access to the computer system of the PNB,” the resolution said.

The respondent was arrested inside the premises of PNP Almanza Branch in Las Piñas.
Under the Cybercrime Prevention Act, computer-related forgery covers the act of knowingly using computer data for perpetuating a fraudulent design.

The case is the first reported under the Cybercrime Prevention Act after the Supreme Court's decision upholding the law's constitutionality.

Karla Martinez Ignacio could face up to six years in jail if found guilty of transferring thousands of dollars to her bank account using fraudulent computer data.

She was indicted by a prosecutor in the city of Las Pinas, outside Manila, and is set to be charged under the Philippines' Cybercrime Prevention Act.

The law is designed to stamp out online scourges like fraud, identity theft and child pornography, but critics say it could be used to stifle dissent as it imposes heavy prison terms for online libel.

Facebook and Twitter have become popular ways of organising major political street protests in the Philippines.

The law was passed in 2012 but its implementation was suspended after coming under challenge from various groups.

The Supreme Court ruled in February that the law was not unconstitutional, paving the way for its implementation.

But the court ruled against a provision giving authorities sweeping powers to shut down websites or record Internet traffic data in real time.

Know Your Personality Type, Defined by the Internet

This new tool attempts to determine your personality type by analyzing your Facebook posts. Companies like Facebook, Google and Twitter look at the queries, observations, updates and enthusiasms we write on their services, then they try to figure out what ads might have the most persuasive effect on us.

On Tuesday, a Berkeley, Calif., start-up called Five posted a tool that gives a sense of what the big web companies might see when they look at us.

Using a link to Facebook posts, Five Labs analyzes the language in which we write, and determines our relative affiliation to five personality attributes: openness, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and neuroticism. It then shows comparisons with famous people (based on their public writings and statements), as well as your Facebook friends.

Based on the initial responses to the site on Twitter, “people seem to identify pretty strongly with the personalities we generate,” said Nikita Bier, the co-founder of Five, which is working on a product for online conversations that will use similar technology. “Only about 10 percent said we were outright wrong about them.”
Part of that may be the overall vagueness of the typing, which can provoke the same kind of identification people feel for the most general newspaper horoscopes.

There is a significant amount of research into the relationship between the words we chose and the personalities we possess. H. Andrew Schwartz, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania who has published research on the topic, is an adviser to Five.

Mr. Bier said the point of the exercise is not precision, but to give people a sense of what social media companies are doing with us, probably with much greater sophistication.
“The predictive qualities of the five types are good for advertising,” he said. “People who are more open go to coffee shops, and have interesting apartments. You might want to give them an ad for Ikea. Neurotic people worry about their health, so you might pitch them vitamins.”
Based on an entirely unscientific sample of one (though the author has known this subject a very long time), Five’s analysis is somewhat accurate, and somewhat bemusing.

I compare myself  Woz  (Co -Founder of Apple) and me are 47% similar  ,  Bill Gates and me are 50% similar, Mark Zuckerberg and me are 39% similar, Marissa Mayer(CEO of Yahoo)  and me are 25% similar.

I know well just three of the 10 Facebook “friends” to whom I am most similar. I’m little akin to most of the people I actually know and like on Facebook.
Sound familiar?
